English to Croatian: Sample Translation - Ballast Water Treatment Systems General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Source text - English
A number of different chemicals or chemical processes have been employed in the ballast water treatment systems reviewed including:
• Chlorine dioxide
• Peracetic acid
• Hydrogen peroxide
• Menadione/Vitamin K
The efficacy of these processes varies according to the conditions of the water such as pH, temperature and, most significantly, the type of organism. Chlorine, whilst relatively inexpensive is virtually ineffective against cysts unless concentrations of at least 2 mg/l are used. Chlorine also leads to undesirable chlorinated byproducts, particularly chlorinated hydrocarbons and trihalomethanes. Ozone yields far fewer harmful byproducts, the most prominent being bromate, but requires relatively complex equipment to both produce
and dissolve it into the water. Chlorine dioxide is normally produced in situ, although this presents a hazard since the reagents used are themselves chemically hazardous. Peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide (provided as a blend of the two chemicals in the form of the proprietary product Peraclean) are infinitely soluble in water, produce few harmful byproducts and are relatively stable as Peraclean. However this reagent is relatively expensive, is dosed at quite high levels and requires considerable storage facilities. For all these chemicals pre-treatment of the water with upstream solid-liquid separation is desirable to reduce the ‘demand’ on the chemical, because the chemical can also react with organic and other materials in the ballast water.
Translation - Croatian Više različitih kemikalija, odnosno kemijskih procesa, koriste se u sustavima upravljanja balastnim vodama, uključujući:
• klorov dioksid
• peracetičnu kiselinu
• vodikov peroksid
• menadion/vitamin K
Korištenje klora također dovodi do neželjenih kloriranih nusproizvoda, osobito kloriranih ugljikovodika i trihalometana.
Croatian to English: The Danube General field: Other Detailed field: Tourism & Travel
Podrijetlo same riječi nije jasno, možda je keltskoga a možda predkeltskog podrijetla, neki govore i o mogućem iranskom korijenu.
Translation - English The Danube is a powerful river, the second longest in Europe after Volga with 2888 kilometres and in some places several kilometres wide. To the ancient Greeks, in its lower part to which they sometimes referred as Istros, it seemed to form part of a great sea (the Black Sea), ocean, so they also called it Okeanos Potamos (Homer), since beyond its „open“ waters awaited a new, cold and barbaric land.
The origin of the word itself is unclear, perhaps it is Celtic or maybe pre-Celtic, some even talk about the possibility of its Iranian roots. All today's languages existing alongside the Danube have similar names for it – it is Donau in German, Dunaj in Slovakian, Duna in Hungarian, Dunav in Croatian, Serbian and Bulgarian, Dunarea in Romanian, Dunai in Ukrainian. For Romans, it was Danubius, which in the Empire's history for the most part formed a border – limes. It was only the Emperor Trajan who ventured to cross the Danube and shift the limes into the depths of Dacia (mostly present day Romania), and this undertaking is witnessed by the stone plaque in the Iron Gate, the Danube gorge, once capricious and dangerous and nowadays pacified in a large lake created after the construction of the Đerdap Dam in the early 1970s.
