Q: I’m concerned that there is too much Iron flowing back and bleeding from the injection site after I’ve injecting weanlings. What should I do to minimize flow back and bleed back?
A: Please keep a few things in mind when injecting iron:
1. Remember that there is always 1 drop of product left on the tip of any needle-free injector after each injection. This is a very small amount of product and will not adversely affect performance. The accumulation of droplets is especially visible with iron. After a dozen iron injections, the stain on the skin of the weanling may seem significant but in reality is not.
2. There is a technique that can be used when injecting iron into weanlings that can help minimize flow back. Shift the skin forward while placing pressure on the skin of the weanling with the tip of the injector. When you release the pressure after the injection, the skin will return to its normal location covering the penetration point created by the injection minimizing or eliminating excess flow back or bleed back.
