Le recours à l’hydrogène a été à plusieurs reprises présenté comme une solution énergétique dans la 2nde moitié du XXe siècle, mais n’a jamais connu l’essor que ses promoteurs espéraient.
Le coût de développement des technologies associées, le manque de viabilité économique et l’absence de proposition réaliste au consommateur expliquent pour une part importante le cantonnement de l’hydrogène à des utilisations principalement industrielles : raffinage, chimie, propulsion des fusées par exemple).
Deux facteurs expliquent l’intérêt que peut susciter cette filière aujourd’hui de façon plus convaincante qu’hier :
- la prise de conscience plus forte des défis énergétiques depuis le début du XXIe siècle, en particulier s’agissant du réchauffement climatique.
- des progrès techniques considérables effectués depuis 10 ans et des perspectives de coûts en nette diminution.
- une stratégie des acteurs impliqués plus réaliste : longtemps fixée sur l’objectif de conversion de la voiture individuelle, la filière se développe désormais sur une constitution progressive d’un marché de l’hydrogène, en développant une offre pour le consommateur et en diffusant progressivement les technologies associées, sur des marchés ‘voisins’ ou ‘de niche’. L’approche, qui conserve comme objectif ultime l’application automobile, développe ainsi l’intérêt d’une filière progressive avec des étapes successives de commercialisations sur différents marchés, pour aboutir à des applications en automobile.

Translation - English Research and industrial strategies for the hydrogen sector
Hydrogen has repeatedly been presented as a solution for energy problems over the second half of the 20th century, but it has never seen the growth its promoters were hoping for.
The cost of the development of associated technologies, the lack of economic viability and the absence of a realistic customer proposition explain to a significant extent why hydrogen has been limited to industrial uses such as refining, chemistry and rocket propulsion. [Number corrected] Three factors explain the interest that this sector can generate today, in a more convincing manner than it has before:
• The growing awareness of energy challenges since the beginning of the 21st century, in particular concerning climate change.
• The considerable technological progress made over the last ten years and the prospect of a net decrease in costs.
• The more realistic strategy followed by involved partners: having been fixated on the objective of converting private cars, as of now, the sector is transforming itself by the gradual establishment of a hydrogen market: by developing a viable consumer offer and by progressively releasing associated technologies into “neighbouring” or “niche” markets. This approach, keeping automotive applications as the ultimate objective, opens up the benefits of a progressive sector with successive commercialisation steps in different markets, in order to finally arrive at automotive applications.
