Translation - English Since the wedding, my wife has treated me well, I far from dislike her and our sex life is normal. In all fairness, other women, even if they are better-looking than my wife, don't affect my sex drive; this is not the case when it comes to other men, in particular those I consider to be quite satisfying, where even a double-take or a few fleeting words will cause a feeling of great satisfaction. With age, I have come to have a clear and definite understanding of this kind of morbid psychology, many times I thought about death, using death to resolve my own life, to be permanently freed. But I took into account every kind of factor, in particular the loss of my wife and the loss of the delicate child gestating inside her belly. Objectively speaking, my desire for same-sex marriage is much weaker now than it was before I got married, and I do not know if it is because I now have a normal sex life, or because I think more about the social and legal responsibilities; acting on the psychological results in a kind of feedback from my actions, which can be corrected, but in my heart I must admit that my homosexuality has not been fundamentally solved, it is only my ability to control it that has been enhanced, nothing more. Impulses and strong desires for homosexual contact often still emerge; I wonder… if I were to separate from my wife, if I were to enter mid-life, if my decadent vigour were to degenerate, if I were to meet the right person, if I were to find the right place and conditions, what would the situation be? I am very afraid. I am still young, unwilling to go down, I would like to live a normal man's life, I'm no longer willing to spend all day afraid, holding back my psychological life; I really want to be worthy of life, worthy of society.

Translation - English Stuart Pedrell had lived in a house in Putxet, on one of the hills that at another time dominated Barcelona, rather like how the Roman hills once dominated Rome, and appeared to be covered in neighbouring housing for the middle classes, plus a duplex penthouse or two for the upper classes, occasionally linked to the old inhabitants of the tower blocks of Putxet hill. The duplexes consisted of a good standardised bargain within the reach of the owners of the surviving tower blocks, as good as those established in the neighbouring Pedralbes and Sarria areas, the last foothills where the upper classes would hold out in their old, decent tower blocks and made sure that their children continued living in the surrounding areas. Stuart Pedrell’s house had been left to him by a childless old lady, that pre-turn of the century house whose architect was influenced by English wrought iron architecture. The railings were a declaration of principles and a crest of elaborate ironwork, rather like the mane of a glazed dragon, ran up the spine of the ceramic roof. Gothic windows, façades hidden by ivy and white wooden furniture covered in blue upholstery in a strict garden where the elegance of the tall cypress hedges framed the controlled freedom of a small pine forest and the exact geometry of a small rhododendron hedge maze. On the ground was gravel and lawn. The gravel was made to not creak under wheels or feet. The lawn was almost 100 years old, well watered, shaped and cut; an old, soft layer upon which the house seemed to float, like a magic carpet.
