Source text - French Le projet des portes est né il y a de cela dix ans, d’une réflexion en rapport avec mon travail artistique. Je m’en servais à cette période en tant que signature en associant une porte fermée au côté d'une porte entre-ouverte. Elle symbolisait alors pour moi l'obstacle à franchir pour avancer dans la vie. Par la suite ce symbole a évolué, la porte représentait alors ma vie et m’aidait à matérialiser mes visions et mes envies, ainsi que les peurs présentes en chacun d'entre nous. La porte soulève la problématique du choix qui conditionne nos vies ; vivre n'est-il pas choisir? Elle peut être fermée, on peut la laisser en l’état ou l’on peut faire le choix de l’ouvrir, de la franchir et d’aller voir ce qui se passe de l’autre coté. Mais alors à quoi l’ouvre-t-on ? Tout le monde peut répondre à cette question. Sa force réside justement dans le fait que par sa seule image elle suggère à chacun une infinité de sens. Je n'impose rien mais propose une vision, un questionnement et souhaite partager ma réflexion car ce symbole a une portée universelle. La porte est devenue un symbole évident qu’il fallait développer et ouvrir à d’autres artistes. Pour que ce projet prenne vie j’ai invité 6 artistes français, moi compris, et 6 artistes texans à collaborer sur la création des portes. Cet échange est l’essence même du projet des portes, faire en sorte que des artistes issus de cultures et d’environnement différents, puissent outre passer cela, ainsi que la barrière linguistique et s’exprimer au travers d’un langage commun qui est celui de l’art. On ouvre ainsi une porte en élaborant ce schéma peu commun qui va l’encontre du schéma classique de l’artiste qui peint seul dans son atelier et qui évolue dans son univers. De plus les 12 artistes approfondiront le dialogue en élargissant leur collaboration artistique à des étudiants en école d’art à Houston.
Houston est pour moi le lieu ou le projet des portes peut prendre vie. Lors de ma première visite, je fus é bloui par l’aspect lumineux de la ville, son agencement de l’espace en total contraste avec le milieu urbain dans lequel j’ai l’habitude d’évoluer. Je remarquais la présence d’une forte communauté artistique dont l’approche très contemporaine m’a séduite. La ville de Houston m’a inspiré un projet de grande ampleur, à sa mesure.
Aussi, l’orientation artistique de ce projet est inspirée du milieu dans lequel j’ai évolué et est le courant dans lequel je m’inscris aujourd’hui. Il s’agit du street Art ou Urban Art. C’est un mouvement artistique contemporain dont les prémices sont apparues dans les 70-80, introduit par des artistes tel que Keith Haring ou Basquiat. C’est aujourd’hui un mouvement en plein boom, qui a pour particularité d’être un art dit « populaire » et accessible à tous, ce sont des termes qui ne qualifient habituellement pas l’art contemporain. C’est un art qui est visible par tous, il évolue dans la rue hors du cadre conventionnel des galeries et des musées. C’est un art de l’éphémère, il n’appartient à personne et à tous à la fois.
Au fil des années, des rencontres et des voyages, j'ai appris qu'il me fallait être curieux, observer, échanger, partager, aller au delà de mes limites : ouvrir des portes. La naissance de ce projet est le fruit de multiples échanges et de nombreuses portes ouvertes en particulier avec l'artiste Clément Laurentin et le 9eme concept, et va aujourd’hui va prendre tout son sens grâce à ma rencontre avec Karine Parker-Lemoyne, qui de Houston, va lui permettre d'exister et de grandir. Cet événement ne doit pas se résumer à une exposition, c'est une invitation à la rencontre, et pas uniquement entre 2 cultures. C'est un désir de pousser des artistes à échanger et à cohabiter sur un support peu commun, mais dans un domaine qui leur est commun. Faire cette exposition au Texas est une occasion rêvée pour franchir et ouvrir une nouvelle porte. « L ‘Art est un voyage peuplée de belle rencontre. »
Translation - English « The Open the Door project was born ten years ago as a reflection relating to my artistic work. At the time, I was working with a project involving a closed door set up next to an open one. To me, it symbolized the obstacle of progressing in life. Since then, this symbol has evolved and the door has come to represent my life and has helped, to realize my visions and desires as well as the fears present in all of us. The door reveals the problem of the choice that determines our lives; to live is to choose, isn’t it? The door can be closed, and you can leave it that way, or you can make the choice to open it, cross the threshold, and go see what is happening on the other side. But then, to what are we opening the door? Everyone can answer this question. Its strength lies precisely in the fact that by its singular image, it suggests to each an infinite meaning. I do not impose, but propose a vision, a questioning and a wish to share my reflection because this symbol has a universal meaning. The door has become a clear symbol which needs to be developed and opened to other artists. For this project to come to life, I invited six French artists, myself included, and six Texan artists to collaborate on the creation of the doors. This exchange is the essence of the doors project – to make sure that artists from different cultures and environments, can move past those differences and the language barrier so that expression can cross to a common language, that of art. We open a door in preparing this unusual pattern that goes against the classic pattern of the artist who paints alone in his studio and who moves in his own world. More that twelve artists will deepen the dialogue while enlarging their artistic collaboration to include art students in Houston.
Houston is, for me, the place where the doors project can come to life. On my first visit, I was dazzled by the luminous aspect of the city, its spacious layout being in total contrast with the urban place in which I grew up in. I noticed the presence of a strong artistic community whose very contemporary approach appealed to me. The city of Houston inspired me to do a major project equal to its size.
Also, the artistic orientation of this project is inspired from the style in which I developed and is currently that which I practice today. That style is Street Art or Urban Art. It is a contemporary artistic movement whose beginnings come from the 70’s and 80’s, and was introduced by artists such as Keith Haring and Basquiat. It is now a booming movement that has the particularity of being called “popular” and accessible to all. These are terms that are not usually applicable to contemporary art. It is an art that is visible to all and develops in the street outside the conventional displays of galleries and museums. It is an ephemeral art that belongs to no one and to everyone all at once. Over the years, from encounters and travels, I learned that I need to be curious, to observe, to exchange, to share, to go beyond my limits: to open doors. The birth of this project is the fruit of multiple exchanges and opened doors, in particular with artist Clément Laurentin and the 9th Concept, and most influentially for this project, with Karine Parker-Lemoyne, from Houston, that allowed this project to exist and grow. This event should not be just an exhibition but also an invitation to experience more than just two cultures. It’s a desire to push artists to exchange and share an uncommon support, but in a common domain. Doing this exhibition in Texas is a dream opportunity to cross the threshold and open a new door. “Art is a voyage populated by beautiful encounters.”
