About me
My name is Michael Derek Gideon, or "Kitwana" as they call me in Kiswahili. As a student at Princeton University, I studied the Swahili language for three years, and also learned Ge'ez, one of the oldest literary languages in Africa. Upon graduating from Princeton, I lived in Kenya for a year with a Fulbright grant, conducting research on oral literature of the Kuria people. I am still translating the praise poetry which I recorded there. My translation of a poem about the Ethiopian saint Walata Petros will appear in Dr. Wendy Belcher's translation of the hagiography "Gadla Walata Petros" ("Life and Deeds of Walata Petros"), forthcoming from Princeton University Press. Dr. Belcher has informed me that my poem is the best translation of a poem from Ge'ez into English that she has ever seen. My dream is to translate many more works of literature from African languages into English. All of these efforts have stemmed from my love of language and the written word, and I will bring that same passion to all of my translation projects.
