English to Spanish: Translation from an extract of Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Black Cat', part of my Degree's Final Project General field: Art/Literary
Source text - English For my own part, I soon found a dislike to it arising within me. This was just the reverse of what I had anticipated; but - I know not how or why it was - its evident fondness for myself rather disgusted and annoyed. By slow degrees, these feelings of disgust and annoyance rose into the bitterness of hatred. I avoided the creature; a certain sense of shame, and the remembrance of my former deed of cruelty, preventing me from physically abusing it. I did not, for some weeks, strike, or otherwise violently ill use it; but gradually - very gradually - I came to look upon it with unutterable loathing, and to flee silently from its odious presence, as from the breath of a pestilence.
What added, no doubt, to my hatred of the beast, was the discovery, on the morning after I brought it home, that, like Pluto, it also had been deprived of one of its eyes. This circumstance, however, only endeared it to my wife, who, as I have already said, possessed, in a high degree, that humanity of feeling which had once been my distinguishing trait, and the source of many of my simplest and purest pleasures.
With my aversion to this cat, however, its partiality for myself seemed to increase. It followed my footsteps with a pertinacity which it would be difficult to make the reader comprehend. Whenever I sat, it would crouch beneath my chair, or spring upon my knees, covering me with its loathsome caresses. If I arose to walk it would get between my feet and thus nearly throw me down, or, fastening its long and sharp claws in my dress, clamber, in this manner, to my breast. At such times, although I longed to destroy it with a blow, I was yet withheld from so doing, partly by a memory of my former crime, but chiefly - let me confess it at once - by absolute dread of the beast.
This dread was not exactly a dread of physical evil - and yet I should be at a loss how otherwise to define it. I am almost ashamed to own - yes, even in this felon's cell, I am almost ashamed to own - that the terror and horror with which the animal inspired me, had been heightened by one of the merest chimaeras it would be possible to conceive. My wife had called my attention, more than once, to the character of the mark of white hair, of which I have spoken, and which constituted the sole visible difference between the strange beast and the one I had destroyed. The reader will remember that this mark, although large, had been originally very indefinite; but, by slow degrees - degrees nearly imperceptible, and which for a long time my Reason struggled to reject as fanciful - it had, at length, assumed a rigorous distinctness of outline. It was now the representation of an object that I shudder to name - and for this, above all, I loathed, and dreaded, and would have rid myself of the monster had I dared - it was now, I say, the image of a hideous - of a ghastly thing - of the GALLOWS! - oh, mournful and terrible engine of Horror and of Crime - of Agony and of Death!
And now was I indeed wretched beyond the wretchedness of mere Humanity. And a brute beast - whose fellow I had contemptuously destroyed - a brute beast to work out for me - for me a man, fashioned in the image of the High God - so much of insufferable wo! Alas! neither by day nor by night knew I the blessing of Rest any more! During the former the creature left me no moment alone; and, in the latter, I started, hourly, from dreams of unutterable fear, to find the hot breath of the thing upon my face, and its vast weight - an incarnate nightmare that I had no power to shake off - incumbent eternally upon my heart!
Beneath the pressure of torments such as these, the feeble remnant of the good within me succumbed. Evil thoughts became my sole intimates - the darkest and most evil of thoughts. The moodiness of my usual temper increased to hatred of all things and of all mankind; while, from the sudden, frequent, and ungovernable outbursts of a fury to which I now blindly abandoned myself, my uncomplaining wife, alas! was the most usual and the most patient of sufferers.
One day she accompanied me, upon some household errand, into the cellar of the old building which our poverty compelled us to inhabit. The cat followed me down the steep stairs, and, nearly throwing me headlong, exasperated me to madness. Uplifting an axe, and forgetting, in my wrath, the childish dread which had hitherto stayed my hand, I aimed a blow at the animal which, of course, would have proved instantly fatal had it descended as I wished. But this blow was arrested by the hand of my wife. Goaded, by the interference, into a rage more than demoniacal, I withdrew my arm from her grasp and buried the axe in her brain. She fell dead upon the spot, without a groan.
This hideous murder accomplished, I set myself forthwith, and with entire deliberation, to the task of concealing the body. I knew that I could not remove it from the house, either by day or by night, without the risk of being observed by the neighbors. Many projects entered my mind. At one period I thought of cutting the corpse into minute fragments, and destroying them by fire. At another, I resolved to dig a grave for it in the floor of the cellar. Again, I deliberated about casting it in the well in the yard - about packing it in a box, as if merchandize, with the usual arrangements, and so getting a porter to take it from the house. Finally I hit upon what I considered a far better expedient than either of these. I determined to wall it up in the cellar - as the monks of the middle ages are recorded to have walled up their victims.
For a purpose such as this the cellar was well adapted. Its walls were loosely constructed, and had lately been plastered throughout with a rough plaster, which the dampness of the atmosphere had prevented from hardening. Moreover, in one of the walls was a projection, caused by a false chimney, or fireplace, that had been filled up, and made to resemble the red of the cellar. I made no doubt that I could readily displace the bricks at this point, insert the corpse, and wall the whole up as before, so that no eye could detect any thing suspicious. And in this calculation I was not deceived. By means of a crow-bar I easily dislodged the bricks, and, having carefully deposited the body against the inner wall, I propped it in that position, while, with little trouble, I re-laid the whole structure as it originally stood. Having procured mortar, sand, and hair, with every possible precaution, I prepared a plaster which could not be distinguished from the old, and with this I very carefully went over the new brickwork. When I had finished, I felt satisfied that all was right. The wall did not present the slightest appearance of having been disturbed. The rubbish on the floor was picked up with the minutest care. I looked around triumphantly, and said to myself - "Here at least, then, my labor has not been in vain."
My next step was to look for the beast which had been the cause of so much wretchedness; for I had, at length, firmly resolved to put it to death. Had I been able to meet with it, at the moment, there could have been no doubt of its fate; but it appeared that the crafty animal had been alarmed at the violence of my previous anger, and forebore to present itself in my present mood. It is impossible to describe, or to imagine, the deep, the blissful sense of relief which the absence of the detested creature occasioned in my bosom. It did not make its appearance during the night - and thus for one night at least, since its introduction into the house, I soundly and tranquilly slept; aye, slept even with the burden of murder upon my soul!
The second and the third day passed, and still my tormentor came not. Once again I breathed as a freeman. The monster, in terror, had fled the premises forever! I should behold it no more! My happiness was supreme! The guilt of my dark deed disturbed me but little. Some few inquiries had been made, but these had been readily answered. Even a search had been instituted - but of course nothing was to be discovered. I looked upon my future felicity as secured.
Upon the fourth day of the assassination, a party of the police came, very unexpectedly, into the house, and proceeded again to make rigorous investigation of the premises. Secure, however, in the inscrutability of my place of concealment, I felt no embarrassment whatever. The officers bade me accompany them in their search. They left no nook or corner unexplored. At length, for the third or fourth time, they descended into the cellar. I quivered not in a muscle. My heart beat calmly as that of one who slumbers in innocence. I walked the cellar from end to end. I folded my arms upon my bosom, and roamed easily to and fro. The police were thoroughly satisfied and prepared to depart. The glee at my heart was too strong to be restrained. I burned to say if but one word, by way of triumph, and to render doubly sure their assurance of my guiltlessness.
‘Gentlemen,’ I said at last, as the party ascended the steps, ‘I delight to have allayed your suspicions. I wish you all health, and a little more courtesy. By the bye, gentlemen, this - this is a very well constructed house.’ (in the rabid desire to say something easily, I scarcely knew what I uttered at all), – ‘I may say an excellently well-constructed house. These walls - are you going, gentlemen? - these walls are solidly put together’; and here, through the mere phrenzy of bravado, I rapped heavily, with a cane which I held in my hand, upon that very portion of the brick-work behind which stood the corpse of the wife of my bosom.
But may God shield and deliver me from the fangs of the Arch-Fiend! No sooner had the reverberation of my blows sunk into silence, than I was answered by a voice from within the tomb! - by a cry, at first muffled and broken, like the sobbing of a child, and then quickly swelling into one long, loud, and continuous scream, utterly anomalous and inhuman - a howl - a wailing shriek, half of horror and half of triumph, such as might have arisen only out of hell, conjointly from the throats of the dammed in their agony and of the demons that exult in the damnation.
Of my own thoughts it is folly to speak. Swooning, I staggered to the opposite wall. For one instant the party upon the stairs remained motionless, through extremity of terror and of awe. In the next, a dozen stout arms were toiling at the wall. It fell bodily. The corpse, already greatly decayed and clotted with gore, stood erect before the eyes of the spectators. Upon its head, with red extended mouth and solitary eye of fire, sat the hideous beast whose craft had seduced me into murder, and whose informing voice had consigned me to the hangman. I had walled the monster up within the tomb!
Translation - Spanish En cuanto a mí, en poco tiempo creció en mi interior un sentimiento de aversión hacia el animal. Justamente, esto era lo contrario de lo que yo esperaba, pero, no sé ni cómo ni porqué, su evidente afecto por mí me repugnaba y me hastiaba. Gradualmente, esos sentimientos de repugnancia y hastío se convirtieron en el más amargo de los odios. Evitaba a la criatura; un cierto sentimiento de vergüenza y un recuerdo de mi pasado acto de crueldad me impedían abusar físicamente del animal. Durante unas semanas, no le golpeé ni lo traté de manera violenta pero, gradualmente, muy gradualmente, empecé a verlo con un desprecio impronunciable, y me fui apartando silenciosamente de su odiosa presencia como si se tratara de la peste.
Algo que incrementó, sin duda, mi aversión hacia la bestia fue descubrir a la mañana siguiente de traerlo a casa que, al igual que Plutón, le faltaba un ojo. Sin embargo, este hecho fue el que hizo que se ganara el cariño de mi esposa que, como ya mencioné antes, poseía un profundo sentimiento de humanidad, que una vez fue mi rasgo más característico, y fue la fuente de mis placeres más simples y puros.
No obstante, junto con mi aversión a este gato, su predilección por mí parecía aumentar. Seguía mis pasos con una perseverancia que al lector le parecería difícil de entender. Allá donde me sentara, él se acurrucaba bajo mi silla o saltaba sobre mis rodillas, cubriéndome con sus detestables caricias. Si me levantaba para andar, se colaba entre mis pies, casi haciéndome caer o, agarrándose a mi ropa con sus largas y afiladas uñas y trepando así hasta mi pecho. En esos momentos, aunque deseaba acabar con el de un golpe, me contuve, en parte por el recuerdo de mi anterior crimen pero, principalmente ―déjenme que al fin lo confiese― por absoluto terror hacia la bestia.
Este terror no era exactamente terror a un mal físico y, sin embargo, había perdido la capacidad de definirlo. Estoy casi avergonzado de reconocer ―sí, incluso en esta celda de delincuentes estoy avergonzado de reconocer― que el pavor y el horror que me inspiraba el animal se haya visto incrementado por una de las más simples quimeras que se hayan podido concebir. Mi esposa me llamó la atención más de una vez sobre la mancha de pelo blanco, de la que ya he hablado, y que era la única diferencia visible entre la extraña bestia y la que destruí. El lector recordará que esta mancha, aunque grande, estaba desde un principio muy poco definida pero, paso a paso; pasos casi imperceptibles, los cuales mi razón intentó rechazar como algo inverosímil, había asumido al fin una rigurosa nitidez de contornos. Fue, finalmente, una representación de un objeto que su nombre me hace estremecer y, por esto, sobre todas las cosas, odiaba y temía y me habría deshecho del monstruo si me hubiera atrevido; ahora era, digo ¡la imagen de una horrible, de una espantosa, HORCA! ¡Oh, lúgubre y terrible máquina de horror y de crimen, de agonía y de muerte!
De hecho ahora me sentí miserable más allá de la miseria de la humanidad. ¡Aun una bestia bruta, cuyo compañero destruí con desprecio, una bestia bruta que profesaba en un hombre creado a imagen y semejanza del altísimo Dios tal insufrible pesadumbre! ¡Ay, ni por la mañana ni por la noche volví a disfrutar de la bendición del descanso! Durante el día, la criatura no me dejaba un momento a solas y, durante la noche, me despertaba cada hora por culpa de pesadillas terroríficas para encontrarme con el caliente aliento de esa cosa en mi rostro y su enorme peso ―una pesadilla encarnada de la que no tenía el poder de zafarme― oprimía eternamente mi corazón.
Bajo la presión de tormentos como estos, el débil vestigio de lo bueno que había en mí sucumbió. Los malos pensamientos se convirtieron en mis únicos amigos, los más oscuros y perversos pensamientos. La volubilidad de mi habitual mal humor creció hacia el odio de todas las cosas y de todo del género humano; y mientras, mi resignada esposa, era la más usual y la más paciente de las víctimas de mis repentinos, frecuentes e incontrolables arrebatos de furia a los que me abandonaba ciegamente.
Un día ella me acompañó, durante algunos quehaceres domésticos, al sótano de un antiguo edificio en el que nuestra pobreza nos obligaba a vivir. El gato me siguió y bajo las empinadas escaleras y, casi haciéndome caer de cabeza, me exasperó hasta la locura. Levanté un hacha y olvidé, en mi cólera, el pueril terror que había paralizado mi mano y lancé un golpe al animal que, obviamente, hubiera sido fatal al instante si hubiera descendido como yo pensaba. Sin embargo, la mano de mi esposa detuvo el golpe. Esa intromisión me incitó y, una ira más que demoníaca me poseyó. Me zafé de su mano y hundí el hacha en su cerebro. Cayó muerta allí mismo, sin tan siquiera un quejido.
Tras este horrible asesinato, me dispongo inmediata y deliberadamente a ocultar el cuerpo. Sabía que no podía sacar el cuerpo de la casa, ni por el día ni por la noche, arriesgándome a ser visto por los vecinos. Se me ocurrieron varios planes. En un momento, pensé en cortar el cadáver en pequeños fragmentos y después destruirlos con fuego. En otro momento, se me ocurrió cavar una tumba para el cuerpo en el suelo del sótano. Consideré después arrojarlo dentro del pozo del patio, o meterlo en una caja, como si fuera una mercancía con los acuerdos habituales y ponerme en contacto con un mozo de cuerda para que se lo llevara de la casa. Finalmente, encontré la opción que consideraba mejor que ninguna de las anteriores. Me decidí a emparedarla en el sótano, como se conocía que los monjes en la Edad Media emparedaban a sus víctimas.
Para un propósito como este, el sótano estaba bien adaptado. Las paredes estaban construidas de una manera poco sólida y últimamente se habían enyesado con yeso rugoso, que la humedad del entorno no le había dejado endurecerse. Además, en una de las paredes había un saliente de una falsa chimenea o de un hogar que habían rellenado para que se asemejara al rojo del sótano. No había duda de que podría quitar fácilmente los ladrillos de este punto, meter el cadáver y reconstruir la pared tal y como estaba, de manera que nadie pudiera detectar nada sospechoso. No estaba equivocado. Con la ayuda de una palanca moví los ladrillos y, después de colocar cuidadosamente el cuerpo contra la pared interior, lo sostuve en esa posición mientras, con dificultad, volví a poner toda la estructura tal y como estaba originalmente. Tras conseguir mortero, arena y pelo, con toda la precaución posible, preparé un yeso que no se podría distinguir del antiguo, y con esto revestí la nueva pared. Cuando acabé, sentí satisfacción al ver que todo estaba bien. La pared no presentaba señal alguna de haber sido alterada. Había limpiado todo lo que había caído a suelo. Miré mi alrededor triunfante y me dije a mi mismo: «Al menos aquí mi trabajo no ha sido en vano».
El siguiente paso fue buscar a la bestia que causaba toda esta miseria, ya que finalmente había decidido acabar con su vida. Si hubiera sido capaz de encontrarla en aquel momento, no cabe la menor duda de cuál sería su destino pero, al parecer, el astuto animal se percató de la violencia de mi anterior arrebato de furia y se abstuvo de estar presente durante mi estado de humor de entonces. Es imposible describir o imaginar el profundo, el maravilloso alivio que la ausencia que esa detestable criatura me hacía sentir en el pecho. No hizo acto de presencia durante la noche y así, durante al menos una noche, desde que entró en la casa, pude dormir tranquila y sonoramente; y sí, pude dormir incluso con el peso de un asesinato sobre mi alma.
Pasaron dos y tres días, y mi tormento no regresó. Volví a respirar como un hombre libre. El monstruo, aterrado, ¡voló del edificio para siempre! ¡No tendré que verlo nunca más! ¡Mi felicidad era extrema! La culpa de mis oscuros actos me perturbaba, aunque no mucho. Me hicieron algunas preguntas, pero fáciles de responder; incluso se estableció una búsqueda pero, obviamente, no se descubrió nada. Mi futura felicidad me parecía algo seguro.
Cuatro días después del asesinato, un grupo de policías me hizo una visita inesperada en casa, y prosiguieron, nuevamente, a investigar rigurosamente el edificio. Sin embargo, conocía la inescrutabilidad del lugar donde se ocultaba el cuerpo y no sentí vergüenza alguna. Los oficiales me pidieron que les acompañara durante su búsqueda. No dejaron ningún rincón o esquina sin inspeccionar. Volvieron a buscar en el sótano con determinación por tercera o cuarta vez, cosa que no me hizo temblar ni un músculo. Mi corazón latía con normalidad, como el de aquel que duerme inocentemente. Recorrí el sótano de punta a punta, crucé los brazos en mi pecho y vagué de aquí para allá. La policía estaba satisfecha y lista para irse. La alegría en mi corazón era demasiado fuerte para contenerla. Ardía en deseos de decir tan solo una palabra a modo de triunfo y para asegurar doblemente mi inocencia.
―Señores― dije, finalmente, mientras los oficiales subían las escaleras―, me alegro de haber disipado todas sus sospechas. Les deseo a todos salud y un poco más de gentileza. Por cierto, señores, esta es una casa muy bien construida… (en un frenético intento de decir algo que sonara natural, apenas sabía lo que decía.) Como les decía, es una casa de sobresaliente construcción. Estas paredes… ¿ya se van, señores? Estas paredes son muy sólidas.
Y en ese momento, movido por el frenesí de mi bravuconería, golpeé con fuerza, con un bastón que sostenía en mi mano, el trozo de pared en el que estaba el cadáver de la esposa de mis amores.
¡Que Dios me proteja y me libre de las garras del Diablo! Tan pronto como el sonido de los golpes se hundió en el silencio, me respondió una voz que provenía de dentro de la tumba. Un sollozo, al principio ahogado y entrecortado, como el llanto de un niño, que se convirtió en un largo, estrepitoso e incesante alarido, completamente anómalo e inhumano, un aullido, un chillido quejumbroso, mitad terror mitad triunfal, como si hubieran salido directamente del infierno, de las gargantas de los condenados en su agonía y de los demonios que se regocijan en su condena.
Sería una locura hablar de mis pensamientos. Paralizado, me tambaleé hacia la pared opuesta. Por un momento, los oficiales que subían las escaleras se quedaron helados, a causa del completo terror y del asombro. A esto le siguieron una docena de robustos brazos que aporreaban la pared, que cayó de golpe. El cadáver, que ya estaba en avanzado estado de descomposición y cubierto de sangre coagulada, permaneció erecto frente a los ojos de los espectadores. En su cabeza, con rojas fauces dilatadas y su solitario ojo de fuego, estaba sentada la horrible bestia cuyo ingenio me sedujo hacia el asesinato y cuya voz delatora me mandó al verdugo. ¡Había emparedado al monstruo en la tumba!

I have completed my studies in Translation and Interpreting but I have always been attracted to translation mostly, specially to literary and audiovisual translation. I specialised myself at University in literary translation but, unfortunately, I couldn't specialise in audiovisual at that time. For that reason, I applied for some online courses in order to have an additional training in audiovisual translation and I am currently studying.
When I was younger, I have always been interested in languages, that is the main reason why I chose translation as a great way to be involved with them. As I was in University, I discovered that translation not only was a way to work with languages, but a very creative and gratifying way of being able to communicate ideas and spread cultures to everybody.
Maybe is a very idealistic way of seeing translation as a profession, as I currently don't work as a translator, but I hope that, as soon as I find my place in the right company, with the right people and the right projects to translate, I will see that, even though it is not a bed of roses, translation is a beautiful way of going towards globalisation.
As Confucius once said: Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.
