With the introduction of computed tomography (CT) followed by other digital diagnostic imaging modalities in the 1970's, and the increasing use of computers in clinical applications, the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recognized the emerging need for a standard method for transferring images and associated information between devices manufactured by various vendors. These devices produce a variety of digital image formats.
The American College of Radiology (ACR) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) formed a joint committee in 1983 to develop a standard to:
— Promote communication of digital image information, regardless of device manufacturer
— Facilitate the development and expansion of picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) that can also interface with other systems of hospital information
— Allow the creation of diagnostic information data bases that can be interrogated by a wide variety of devices distributed geographically.

Se zavedením výpočetní tomografie (CT), následovaná dalšími digital diagnostické zobrazovací metody v roce 1970, a zvyšuje se míra využívání výpočetní techniky v klinických aplikacích, American College of radiologie (ACR) a National Electrical asociace výrobců (NEMA) uznal, vznikající potřeba standardní metoda pro přenos snímků a souvisejících informací mezi zařízeními od různých výrobců vyrábí. Tato zařízení produkují řadu digitálních obrazových formátů.
American College of radiologie (ACR) a National Electrical asociace výrobců (NEMA) vytvořili společný výbor v roce 1983 na vytvoření standardu pro:
- Podporu komunikace digitální obrazové informace, bez ohledu na výrobce zařízení
- Podpora rozvoje a rozšiřování Picture Archiving a komunikačních systémů (PACS), který dokáže také komunikovat s ostatními systémy nemocničních informačních
- Umožňují tvorbu diagnostických základů informační údaje, které mohou být vyslýchán širokou škálu zařízení geograficky.

Tématem práce je digitalizovaný archivační systém a jeho komunikace v rámci samotného oddělení a v rámci celého zdravotnického zařízení. Vysvětlení digitalizace obrazu a jeho následná archivace. Popis z čeho se digitalizovaný archiv skládá a jak funguje. Propojení digitalizovaného archivu s nemocničním a rentgenovým informačním systémem. Propojení jednotlivých digitalizovaných archivů mezi sebou v rámci jednoho státu i mezi státní propojení digitalizovaných archivů. Možnosti použití digitalizovaného archivu v budoucnosti.
