English to Malay: Natural History of Bamboo and Rattan
Source text - English Within the variety of environments found in South-East Asia, bamboos and rattans thrive in very different locations. Bamboos prefer open spaces: they grow along river banks, in clearings, and where forest has been cut or burned down. Given the right conditions, bamboos will come to dominate the landscape, covering great tracts of land. Rattan, on the other hand, succeeds best within the rain forest, where it can germinate in the moist surface layer of decaying vegetation and is protected in early life from the full strength of the sun. Rattans require other vegetation for support and shade, and consequently they have developed interesting associations with other rain forest inhabitants.
