Recherche d'une famille « type » paysanne-pauvre.
Chine sud vendredi 22/04 – 20 h
Nous avons été voir plusieurs familles "paysannes" mais ça n'allait pas. On est dans la banlieue de Shanghai et non à la campagne. Ces familles sont beaucoup plus riches que la moyenne et le paysage, celui d'une banlieue.
Après un voyage exténuant, l'arrivée s'est bien passée. Je suis avec W., un Chinois qui vit en France. Accueillis à l'aéroport par cette famille. C’est l’oncle d’Amérique qui arrive. Le fait qu’une de leur fille soit mariée avec un chinois d’outre-mer (et pas n’importe lequel !) bouleverse toute leur vie ici. La valeur des choses est tellement disproportionnée ! Une nuit à l’hôtel ici (au prix bas pour chinois) représente plus d’un an de loyer de leur appartement. Tout est comme ça. Ça fait forcément tourner la tête. Le moindre cadeau représente un ou plusieurs mois de travail … ça me fait drôle de voir cette famille ici, après avoir vu leur fille à Paris. Lorsque je lui avais dit qu’elle parlait pas mal français (pour lui faire plaisir car elle aligne juste quelques mots) elle m’a répondu « non, non ! ». « Petit à petit, l’oiseau fait son nid » !!! Ah ! Je me suis dit qu’elle avait dû lire cette expression dans un livre et l’apprendre par cœur pour la ressortir au bon moment. Et ici, on arrive ce matin pour prendre le petit déjeuner chez eux et l’on tombe sur un type qui nous dit « bonjour, très heureux de faire votre connaissance » en parfait français ! C’est un chinois qui a une formation en droit international et qui avait appris le français au temps des concessions françaises avec un prêtre. Il n’a jamais été en France. Par contre, il a passé vingt ans de sa vie en camp de travaux forcés, province de Shanxi, comme « droitiste ». Dans une brigade, sous contrôle de voleurs qui eux sont considérés comme moins criminels que les « politiques ». Emouvant et terrible. Il me propose de m’emmener un jour visiter le camp. Au passage, il parle de la fille de M. Kuo et dit qu’il lui a donné des leçons de français. C’est sans doute pour cette raison qu’il fréquente un peu cette maison respectable (le père est cadre communiste). Tout d’un coup, je l’imagine lui enseignant cette phrase : « petit à petit, l’oiseau fait son nid » ! C’est lui, c’est sûr ! Je m’amuse à penser la sortir à mon tour dans la conversation !
W. n’avait jamais vu auparavant sa « belle famille » de Chine populaire. Il commence déjà à les trouver compliqués, surtout la belle-mère qui je trouve aussi en fait un peu trop « sourires quasi-permanents » . Tout à l’heure, lorsque W. était aux toilettes, elle a parlé à son mari. Le « droitiste » venait de partir. Et là elle a perdu complètement son sourire pour prendre un visage crispé et tout d’un coup effrayant. Je l’ai bien observé pendant qu’elle souriait en essayant de voir si elle était sincère ou pas. Je m’amusais à cacher sa bouche avec ma main devant les yeux pour ne voir que l’expression de ses yeux. Un bon exercice pour distinguer les vrais des faux !
Dimanche 24/04
Retour à la case départ. Bashan. Le bide complet, cette belle famille ! Nous sommes allés finalement dans un premier village où l’on nous a montré un chef de famille modèle, riche et trop vieux ! Ensuite dans un autre village plus éloigné où là on trouve enfin un couple avec un enfant qui convient et dans une vieille maison, assez misérable. Mais le chef de village tire la gueule. Il nous présente une autre famille voisine qui habite dans une maison toute neuve. Il est comptable et elle à l’usine ! Pas mal leur famille de paysans. Je reviens à la charge sur l’autre famille et là le chef nous dit clairement qu’elle ne peut représenter le village. Si près du but ! Ecœurés, nous partons. On prend la décision de quitter Shanghai et cette belle-famille de malheur pour San Tao. Lorsque W. leur annonce ça, leurs visages s’assombrissent tout d’un coup. W. ne mange pas et la belle-mère perd la face de plus en plus et perd son sourire. Nous partons en voiture.
Discussion de W. avec les beaux-parents sur ce qui s’est passé. La belle-mère « se met à table » selon l’expression favorite de W. et sort sa carte de sécurité de la ville de Shanghai (délivrée par le Parti). Elle explique que depuis la permission d’entrée des Taiwanais, la surveillance des étrangers-encor plus pour un photographe- a redoublé. Ils avaient demandé à leur chef la permission de nous amener en campagne. D’où les familles modèles qu’ils nous présentaient à la place de familles de paysans pauvres. Bref, imbroglio à la chinoise. Je regrette vraiment d’être venu avec W. c’était une erreur. Nous partons dès que possible pour San Tao.

J’en ai assez de travailler sur les Chinois. Je suis dans le piège de la spécialisation. On me demande des sujets sur les Chinois ou la Chine alors que je n’ai envie que d’une chose : d’en sortir !
Lundi 25/04
Les beaux-parents, ce matin tôt, sont venus voir W. pour lui faire une nouvelle proposition. Ils ont bien réfléchi et pas dormi de la nuit ( !) et nous suggèrent d’aller dans le village natal du père dans le Jungsu. On accepte. Je ne sais pas si on le regrettera mais on verra bien. Je trouvais ça trop con d’avoir été à Shanghai et passer trois jours à chercher une famille pour rien. Donc nous repartons demain matin à 6 h 30 en autocar et nous serons dans ce village vers 17 h.
Aujourd’hui nous avons été avec le beau-fils à Shanghai. C’est une ville vraiment fascinante, surtout l’ancienne concession japonaise. Ca me rappelle les films des années 30.
Mardi 26/04
Enfin arrivés dans le village natal du beau-père, à 250 km de Shanghai (nord), à 10 km de la mer et 80 km de Yang-Tsé. Voyage à l’africaine, vieux car bourré à bloc, panne de deux heures, après laquelle il ne pouvait rouler qu’en seconde, contrôle police, contrôle billet, traversé du Yang-Tsé, arrêt pipi …etc. Retard de trois heures, ensuite bagnole jusqu’au village où je suis le premier occidental blanc à foutre les pieds. On est logé dans une splendide maison traditionnelle mais neuve. W. dans une chambre, mois dans une autre. Tout le reste de la famille doit s’entasser dans une autre maison ! On y peut rien. Tout est arrangé, ont chuchoté les beaux-parents à W. ce soir. Quoi ? Une famille modèle, riche ou une vraie famille paysanne ordinaire ? On verra.
Mercredi 27/04
Enfin ! J’ai commencé à photographier cette famille paysanne si difficile à trouver (alors que 80 % du milliard et plus de chinois sont paysans !). Ils ont l’air quand même au-dessus de la moyenne mais ça va. Pas mal de cinéma pour moi aussi. Ce soir, ils allaient en bicyclette chez des amis d’un autre village qui viennent d’avoir un gosse. On n’a pas pu les suivre car deux types de la sécurité sont venus chez Mr et Mme Kuo pour se renseigner sur moi. Ils doivent se rendre à 70 km d’ici demain à l’aube pour expliquer notre (ma) présence. Ils répondent de nous. Je suis le premier occidental à mettre les pieds dans ce village et je dois dire que ça se voit. Dans le village, les gens se marrent ou ont peur quand je m’approche. C’est ouvert aux étrangers que depuis peu de temps.
C’est vraiment dommage qu’on ne nous enregistre pas, W. et moi, en compagnie des autres. C’est vraiment tordant. Tout en souriant, on dit les pires saletés sur eux en français. W. fait semblant de me traduire ce qu’ils racontent et lui me dit : « bon ils racontent toujours les mêmes salades. Désolé d’avoir à vous offrir de si maigres repas (on en peut plus tant il y a à manger !) etc … »
Le pire ici c’est pour chier ! les WC c’est en plein air, à deux pas des maisons, il y a une espèce de trône en bois au-dessus d’une fosse. Le tout sans aucune porte. Ça doit dater de la libération, comme ça il ne peut pas y avoir de secrets pour personne. Pas de vie privée. D’ailleurs avant, les rideaux éraient proscrits dans les maisons, les portes entre les chambres aussi. Tu passes devant et hop tu tombes sur quelqu’un qui pisse ou qui chie ! Moi, je n’ai jamais chié aussi vite. Enfin !
Jeudi 28/04
Ce matin, nous sommes allées dans la famille Kuo à 6 heures. J’ai suivi la grand-mère au marché. C’était beau. Un type de la sécurité a sorti sa carte et a posé des questions à W. sans plus. Puis vers 9 heures, le chef de famille est venu me chercher. Je l’ai suivi. Petit déjeuner. Interrogatoire en règle sur les vraies raisons de notre séjour en Chine. W. est obligé de dire plus ou moins la vérité. Pour le travail, il demande quel visa nous avons. Aï, aï, aï ! J’ai l’impression que mon travail sur cette famille va s’arrêter là. (j’ai un visa touriste qui ne m’autorise pas officiellement à travailler)
Vendredi 29/04
Hier, les beaux-parents sont allés voir les autorités à 70 km d’ici avec nos passeports et tout s’est très bien passé. Ils répondent de nous, et comme ils sont eux-mêmes du parti et plus encore, la belle-mère travaille pour les services de Sécurité, tout est réglé. Par contre, pendant ce temps, le « chef de famille » lui, en a profité pour nous rendre suspects, nous emmerder et nous surveiller toute une journée. Je me croyais en 1982, avec le cadre du Parti, l’interprète officiel, le chauffeur, etc. Il était furieux qu’on soit parti ce matin très tôt sans lui. Du coup, on était véritablement emprisonnés. Je ne pouvais pas faire un pas dehors sans qu’il me suive. Les photos de la famille paysanne étaient mises en scène … insupportable. C’est drôle comme la situation peut tout d’un coup basculer. On devient alors suspects pour le moindre mouvement, espion ! C’est le propre de toute dictature.

Il y a ici une combinaison entre l’esprit compliqué et calculateur des chinois et entre des intérêts personnels qui pourrissent tous les rapports humains et dus au régime politique. Par contre, il n’y a pas cette soi-disant pudeur des chinois de la diaspora, à l’origine de tous les refus d’être photographiés. Ici ils sont curieux et ravis d’être pris en photos. Les seuls qui ne veulent pas ont quelque chose à cacher … Comme ces revendeurs de contrebande. Ce qui prouve bien, qu’en diaspora, ils refusent parce qu’ils ont tous quelque chose à cacher. W. me la confirmé. De toute façon, j’en suis convaincu.

Search for a “typical” peasant/poor family
Southern China Friday 4/22 8pm
We have seen several “peasant” families, but they didn’t pan out. We’re in a suburb of Shanghai, and not in the country. These families are much richer than the average, and the countryside is suburban.
After an exhausting trip, the arrival went smoothly. I am with W., a Chinese man who lives in France. Welcomed at the airport by this family. The rich uncle arrives. The fact that their daughter is married to a Chinese person from overseas (no matter who!) shatters their entire life here. The value of things is so disproportionate! One night in a hotel here (at low prices for China) represents more than a year in rent for their apartment. Everything is like that here. It can’t help but make your head spin. The smallest gift represents one or several months of work…it’s strange to see this family here, after having seen their daughter in Paris. When I told her she didn’t speak bad French (to make her happy, as she could only string a couple words together), she replied “no, no!”. “Little by little, the bird makes his nest” !!! Ah! I told myself she must have read this expression in a book and learned it by heart to use at the appropriate moment. And here, I arrive this morning to have breakfast at their home and land on someone who greets us with “Good morning, pleased to make your acquaintance” in perfect French! He’s Chinese, and has a background in international law, and learned French at the time of the colonization from a priest. He’s never been in France. However, he spent twenty years of his life in a forced labor camp, in the province of Shanxi, for being a “right-winger”. In a work gang, under the control of thieves, who are considered less criminal than the “politicals”. Moving and terrible. He offers to take me one day to visit the camp. In the hall, he speaks about Mr. Kuo’s daughter, and says he gave her French lessons. It’s no doubt for this reason that he sometimes visits this respectable home (the father is a communist official).
All of a sudden, I imagine him teaching this expression: “little by little, the bird makes his nest”! It’s him, I’m sure. I amuse myself by thinking how to employ it in conversation!
Before, W. had never met this “beautiful family”, from the heart of China. He had already begun to find them complicated, especially the mother-in-law who, in fact, I also find, overdoes it a little with her, “quasi-permanent smiles”. Just now, while W. was in the bathroom, she spoke to her husband. The “right-winger” had just left. And she completely lost her smile in a terrifying flash to assume a rigid expression. I carefully observed her smile trying to see if she was sincere or not. I played a little game, hiding her mouth by placing my hand in front of my eyes so I could only see the look in her eyes. Good practice for telling apart the true and the false!
Sunday 4/24
Return to square one. Bashan. What a total failure, this wonderful family! We went in the first village where we were shown the head of a model family, rich and too old! Then, in another village further away, we finally found a couple with one child that would do, and moreover, in an old-falling apart house. But the head of the village makes a face. He introduces us to some one of their neighbors, a family that lives in a brand new home. He’s an accountant, and she’s at the factory! Not bad, their family of peasants. I raise the subject of the other family again with the head of the village, and he makes it clear that they will not represent the village. So close! Disheartened, we leave. We make the decision to leave Shanghai and the unhappy in-laws for San Tao. When W. announces the decision, their faces suddenly turn somber. W. stops eating, and the mother-in-law sheds little by little her smile. We drive off.
Discussion between W. and the in-laws about what’s happened. The mother-in-law “has something to get off her plate” as W. likes to say and takes out her identity card (issued by the Party). She explains that since permission was accorded to the Taiwanese to enter the mainland, the surveillance of foreigners had doubled, even more for a photographer. They asked their chief permission to take us to the countryside. Where, we were shown model families in the place of poor peasants. In short, a Chinese tangle. I truly regret having come with W. It was a mistake. We leave as soon as possible for San Tao.
Sunday/Monday the 25th
I’ve done enough work on the Chinese. I’m caught in the trap of specialization. I’ve proposed subjects about the Chinese or China, when I only want one thing: to get out!
Monday 4/25
The in-laws came early this morning to see W. and bring a new offer. They’ve thought about this carefully and didn’t sleep the night (!) and suggested that we travel to the father’s home village in Jungso. We accept. I don’t know whether or not we’ll regret it. We’ll see. What a waste, to have spent three days looking for a family in Shanghai, for nothing. We leave tomorrow afternoon at 6:30 in bus, and we’ll be in the village near 5pm.
Today we spent the day with the son-in-law in Shanghai. It’s a fascinating city, especially the vestiges of the Japanese occupation. It reminds me of the thirties.
Tuesday 4/26
We finally arrived in the home village of the father-in-law, 250 km North of Shanghai, 10 km from the sea, and 80 km from Yangzi. It was an African journey: an old bus packed to gills, a breakdown after two hours, after which the driver couldn’t advance faster than second gear, police inspection, ticket inspection; we cross the Yanghzi, stop for a pee… etc. Delay of three hours, and then a car to the village where I am the first white, Westerner to have set foot here. We’re housed in a magnificent traditional home, freshly built, with W. in one room, and me in another. The rest of family is crammed in another house! There’s nothing we can do. Everything’s arranged, W.’s in-laws whispered this evening. What? A model family, rich, or a real, ordinary, peasant family? We’ll see.
Wednesday 4/27
Finally! I started to photograph this peasant family, so difficult to find (even though eighty percent of a billion Chinese are peasants). Still, they appear a little better off than the average, but this will do. And a lot of drama for me. This evening they bicycled to some friends of theirs who just had a kid. We couldn’t follow them in the car because two men, probably from State Security, visited Mr. and Mrs. Kuo to make inquiries about me, and issued a summons to appear tomorrow (70 km away from the village) to explain our (my) presence. They vouch for us. I am the first Westerner to set foot in the village, and I have to admit, it shows. In the village, people giggle when I approach; it’s only been open to foreigners a short time.
It’s really a shame that W. and I don’t record our conversations. They’re hysterical. Smiling, we call them with the worst things we can think of in French, and W. pretends to translate what they say about me, and tells me, “Well, they’re always dishing out the same nonsense. We’re sorry to have offered you such a poor meal (we cannot eat a bite more, there is so much to eat!) etc.
The worst is taking a shit! The toilets are out in the open, two steps from the house. There’s a kind of seat in wood over a hole. There’s no door. It must be from the liberation, as you weren’t allowed to keep secrets from anyone. No private life. Additionally, curtains were forbidden in homes, and even doors to bedrooms. You go for a walk, and you pass right in front of someone who’s taking a piss or a shit! I’ve never taken a shit so fast in my life! Really!
Thursday 4/28
This morning we arrived at the Kuo family at 6 o’clock. I accompanied the grandmother to the market. It was beautiful. Someone from security took out his card and asked W. some questions. Nothing more. Then around 9 o’clock, the head of the family came to get him. I followed him. Breakfast. A detailed questioning. W. is forced to more or less admit the truth. For work, he asks us which visa we have. Aye! Yi! Yi! I had the impression that my work on the this family is going to end there. (I had a tourist visa that did not officially authorize me to work.)
Friday 4/29
Yesterday, the in-laws left for their meeting with the authorities 70 km from here with our passports and everything went well. They vouched for us, and as they themselves are members of the Party, and more than that, the mother in law works for the Security Services, everything was in order. On the other hand, while this was going on, the “head of the family, took advantage of the time to cast suspicions on us, to fuck around with us, and monitor us for a whole day. I thought I was in 1982, with the Party official, the official interpreter, the driver etc. He was furious that we left early this morning without him. As a result, we were his prisoners. I couldn’t do an outdoor shot without him following me. The photos of the peasant families were totally staged…unacceptable. It’s funny how a situation can shift all of a sudden. Our least movement is scrutinized and suspect. Spy! All dictatorships are like this.

Here there’s a mix between the complicated and calculating nature of the Chinese, and the selfish interests that characterize all human relations attributable to the political regime. On the other hand, there is no so-called prudishness on the part of the Chinese diaspora, the origin of all refusals to be photographed. Here, everyone is curious, and happy to be photographed. The only ones who don’t want to have things to hide…Like black-market dealers. Which is excellent proof that in the diaspora they refuse because they have something to hide. W. confirmed this for me. Anyway, I’m convinced.

Source text - French Après l’élaboration de notre exposition We are a multitude à la Galerie Art & Essai (Rennes), nous avons accueilli l’artiste pendant une semaine afin de réaliser un corpus de textes proposant une réflexion sur les pratiques curatoriales.
Ces documents constituent ensemble une Student Series, publication réalisée par un groupe d’étudiants et dirigée par Ben Kinmont.
Selon les instructions données par l’artiste, chaque étudiante devait imaginer l’histoire d’un commissaire fictif qui réaliserait une exposition et qui pouvait avoir vécu n’importe où et à n’importe quelle époque. La pratique curatoriale présentée devait être à contre-courant de la culture dominante de son temps et motivée par un sentiment d’urgence.
Les textes témoignent de la responsabilité du commissaire vis-à-vis du contexte dans lequel il évolue. Ces expositions imaginaires servent parfois d’armes dans un contexte de guerre, de moyen d’émancipation, de thérapie jusqu’à devenir un réel moyen de survie. À travers la fiction, nos écrits révèlent la mission sociale et parfois politique que le commissaire doit prendre en compte. Le sentiment d’urgence est apparu comme une nécessité intrinsèque au rôle de l’art.
Après avoir été commissaire d’exposition, les 14 étudiantes deviennent biographes pour On being and power; or a history of curatorial practices that never occurred. Au fil des pages, le lecteur voyage dans l’espace et le temps, du XIXème siècle à l’an 2122, pour découvrir des expositions sans frontières temporelles ni géographiques.
Notre publication regroupe alors une liste de pratiques alternatives propre à chaque subjectivité et présentée comme une solution à une certaine urgence.
En tant que commissaires en devenir, ce workshop a permis à l’ensemble des étudiantes de réfléchir à la conception d’exposition en mettant à l’épreuve les impératifs institutionnels. Cette publication offre donc de nouvelles possibilités situées en marge des frontières traditionnelles du monde de l’art.
Cette édition a été réalisée par les 14 étudiantes-commissaires du master Métiers et Arts de l’Exposition de Rennes 2 dans le cadre d’un workshop avec Ben Kinmont en avril 3016.
Translation - English After the preparation and installation of our exposition We are a multitude at the Gallery Art & Essai in Rennes, we welcomed the artist during a week in order to produce a series of texts reflecting on curatorial practices.
Together, these documents constitute a Student Series, a publication produced by a group of students under the guidance of Ben Kinmont.
According to the instructions given by the artist, each student had to imagine the story of a fictional curator who had mounted an exhibition in any time and place. The curatorial practice presented had to go against tide of the dominant culture of the time, and be motivated by a sense of urgency.
The texts bear witness to the responsibility of the curator vis-à-vis the context in which it evolved. These imaginary expositions are sometimes employed as arms in the context of war, as means of emancipation, as therapy, even becoming a real means of survival. Through this fiction, our writing revealed the social and occasionally political mission that the curator must take into account. The sense of urgency manifested the intrinsic necessity in the role of art.
After having commissioned the exposition, the fourteen students became biographers for On Being and Power, or a History of Curatorial Practices That Never Occurred. Carried along by the narrative thread, the reader travels in space and time, from the 19th Century up until the year 2122, and discovers expositions that surpass temporal frontiers and geography.
In this way, our publication regroups a list of alternative practices suited to each subjective perspective, and presented as a solution to an urgent problem.
As future curators, this workshop permitted the entire class to reflect on the concept of an exposition by putting it to the test institutional imperatives. Thus, the publication offers new possibilities positioned on the margins of traditional boundaries in the art world.
This publication was produced by the fourteen student-curators in the masters program of art and careers at the Exposition of Rennes 2 as part of a workshop with Ben Kinmont in April 2016.

Parmi les inventions qui de puis le commencement de ce siècle ont excité un intérêt universel, celle du Daguerréotype est certainement l’une des plus extraordinaires. Pendant longtemps elle a été entourée d’un mystère favorable à l'incrédulité; mais l'admiration seule maintenant est permise. L'Etat, qui vient d'en acquérir !a propriété dans l'intérêt des sciences et des arts, a donné le signal de la publicité c'est donc un devoir en quelque sorte pour les organes de la presse de portera la découverte de M. Daguerre à la connaissance du plus grand nombre possible de personnes, et de populariser ses procédés, pour que les esprits curieux et ingénieux soient en tous lieux appelés en jouir, et à se mettre sur là voie des perfectionnements.
Pour bien comprendre la photographie, il est nécessaire d'avoir préalablement quelque notion d’une chambre noire, qu'on appelle aussi chambre obscure. Voici comment M. Arago raconte l’histoire cette dernière invention. Un physicien napolitain, Jean-Baptiste Porta, reconnut, il y a environ deux siècles, que si l'on perce un très petit trou dans le volet de la fenêtre d'une chambre bien, close, ou, mieux encore, dans une plaque métallique mince appliquée à ce volet, tous les objets extérieurs dont tes rayons peuvent atteindre le trou vont se peindre sur le mur de la
chambre qui lui fait face, avec des dimensions réduites ou agrandies suivant les distances, et avec les couleurs naturelles. Porta découvrit, peu de temps après, que le trou n'a nullement besoin d'être petit; qu'il peut avoir une largeur quelconque quand on le couvre d'un de ces verres bien polis qui, à raison de leur forme, ont été appelés des lentilles.
Dès lors Porta fit construire des chambres noires portatives. Chacune d'elles était composée d'un tuyau plus ou moins long armé d'une lentille ; l’écran blanchâtre en papier ou en carton/sur lequel les images allaient se peindre, occupait le foyer. Cet appareil a été depuis perfectionné une glace dépolie remplace l’écran blanchâtre, et sur cette glace la lumière trace des vues parfaitement exactes des objets les plus compliqués avec une netteté parfaite de contours, avec la dégradation naturelle des teintes. Maison sait que ces images sont fugaces comme les reflets, comme l'ombre; dès qu'on déplace 'appareil, dès qu'on enlève la glace, elles disparaissent.
Or ce sont ces images de la chambre obscure qui, parla découverte de M. Daguerre ~s'impriment maintenant elles mêmes sur une surface métallique qui remplace le verre dépoli, et, une fois produites et fixées, elles se conservent pour toujours. En d'autres termes, dans le Daguerréotype la puissance de la lumière crée, en quatre ou cinq minutes, des dessins où les objets conservent mathématiquement leurs formes jusque dans les plus petits détails, où les effets de la perspective linéaire, et la dégradation des tons provenant de la perspective aérienne, sont accusés avec une délicatesse que l'art n'a jamais connue.
Ainsi nul doute, nulle ambiguïté. Une personne qui ignore complétement le dessin peut, à l'aide du Daguerréotype, obtenir en quelques minutes des images parfaites et durables de tous les objets ou de toutes les vues qui lui plaisent. II lui suffit de placer l'appareil devant un paysage, devant un monument, devant une statue, ou dans sa chambre devant les curiosités ou les tableaux qui l'ornent, et en quelques instants il en a la reproduction parfaite il a un dessin qu’il encadre, qu'il met sous verre, qu'il suspend à la muraille comme une-estampe qui aurait été exécutée lentement, patiemment et à grands frais. Chacun peut, avec cette admirable nvention, s'entourer de tous les souvenirs qui lui sont chers; avoir une représentation fidèle de sa maison paternelle, des lieux où il a vécu, ou qu'il a admirés dans ses voyages.
On s'exposerait toutefois à une sorte de déception si l’on imaginait que toute image de la nature obtenue par le moyen du Daguerréotype est nécessairement une œuvre d'art remarquable une estampe belle et séduisante. D'abord, tous les objets et toutes les vues-de la nature ne sont pas agréables; il faut savoir choisir. Puis, dans les épreuves du Daguerréotype, les images se reproduisent sans leurs couleurs on croirait voir des dessins à la manière noire, ou plutôt à la mine de plomb estompée ce ne sont pas des tableaux. Enfin, il faut tout dire dans l'état actuel de l'invention, la lumière de l'image n'a pas encore toute la vivacité, toute la chaleur de la lumière du jour. L'effet est le plus ordinairement froid et sombre comme s'il était donné par un crépuscule d'hiver le soleil semble absent; on croirait au plus que la lune était au ciel tandis que se formait dans la chambre obscurcie dessin mystérieux. Aussi nous confesserons que les plus belles 'épreuves du Daguerréotype que nous ayons encore vues sont celles qui représentaient, soit des monuments d'une architecture riche et fleurie saisis dans des conditions favorables ; soit des intérieurs des cabinets d'art où se trouvaient des bas-reliefs, des statuettes, des médailles des objets précieux, groupés avec intention et avec goût. Ces derniers sujets sont reproduits avec une perfection et un charme à désespérer les plus habiles disciples de Gérard Dow, de Mieris ou de Metzu.
Malgré ces restrictions, la découverte est admirable, et on l'eût regardée autrefois comme un miracle ou comme un sortilège. Ce n'est point par le hasard qu'elle a été produite, mais par la force de la volonté, et après quinze ans de veilles et de tâtonnements. Essayons en partie de l'expliquer, nous aidant du rapport lu par M. Arago à la Chambre des députés, et de la communication qu'il a faite depuis à l'Académie des sciences. Les alchimistes réussirent jadis à unir l'argent à l'acide marin ; le produit de la combinaison était un sel blanc qu'ils appelèrent lune ou argent corné. Ce sel jouit de la propriété remarquable dé noircir à la lumière, de noircir d'autant plus vite que les rayons qui le frappent sont plus vifs. Couvrez une feuille de papier d'une couche d'argent corné, ou, comme on dit aujourd'hui, d'une couche de chlorure d'argent; formez sur cette couche, à l'aide d'une lentille, l'image d'un objet les parties obscures de l'image, les parties sur lesquelles ne frappe aucune lumière resteront blanches les parties fortement éclairées deviendront complétement noires; les demi-teintes seront représentées par des gris plus ou moins foncés.
Ces applications de la curieuse propriété du chlorure
d'argent découverte par les anciens alchimistes, ont préoccupé,
au commencement de notre siècle, plusieurs savants
illustres, entre autres notre célèbre physicien Charles,
Wedgwood (voy. p. 95), et Humphry Davy. Mais il était
réservé à nos compatriotes .MM. Niepce et Daguerre de
féconder ces essais et d'en faire sortir la découverte.
M. Niepce était un propriétaire retiré dans les environs de Châlons-sur-Saône. Il consacrait ses loisirs à des recherches scientifiques. Il paraît s'être occupé dès 1814 des moyens de fixer les images de la chambre obscure. Plus tard, il unit ses efforts a M. Daguerre, qui fit des progrès plus rapides vers la découverte, et qui, après la mort de son associé, survenue il y a quelques années, acheva de lui donner le caractère précis qu'elle a maintenant. Une correspondance authentique entre ces deux physiciens ne permet pas en effet de douter que, par la supériorité de sa méthode, par le meilleur choix des enduits, M. Daguerre n'ait plus particulièrement droit au titre d'inventeur.
Voici la description du procédé employé par M. Daguerre.
Les épreuves se font sur des feuilles d'argent plaquées sur cuivre. L'épaisseur des deux métaux ne doit pas excéder celle d'une forte carte.
Le procédé se divise en cinq opérations la première consiste à polir et à nettoyer la plaque pour la rendre propre à recevoir la couche sensible sur laquelle l'image doit se fixer ; la seconde, à appliquer cette couche; la troisième, à soumettre, dans la chambre noire, la plaque préparée à l'action de la lumière pour y recevoir l'image de la nature la quatrième, à faire paraître cette image qui n'est jamais visible en sortant de la chambre noire la cinquième a pour but d'enlever la couche sensible qui continuerait à être modifiée par la lumière et tendrait à détruire l'épreuve.
Première opération. – II faut pour cette opération un petit flacon d'huile d'olives, du coton cardé très fin de la ponce broyée excessivement fine, enfermée dans un nouet de mousseline assez claire pour que la ponce puisse passer facilement en secouant le nouet ; un flacon d'acide nitrique étendu d'eau dans la proportion d'une partie (en volume) d'acide, contre seize parties (également en volume) d'eau distillée un châssis en fil de fer sur lequel on pose les plaques pour les chauffer à l'aide d'une lampe à esprit-de vin ; enfin une petite lampe à esprit-de-vin.
On commence par bien polir la plaque à cet effet on la saupoudre de ponce (en secouant sans toucher la plaque), et avec du coton imbibé d'un peu d'huile d'olives, on la frotte légèrement en arrondissant. Quand la plaque est bien polie, il s'agit de la dégraisser, ce qui se fait encore en la saupoudrant de ponce et en la frottant à sec avec du coton, toujours en arrondissant. On fait ensuite un petit tampon de coton qu'il faut imbiber d'un peu d'acide étendu d'eau. Alors on frotte la plaque avec le tampon, en ayant soin d'étendre parfaitement l'acide sur toute la surface de la plaque. On s'aperçoit que l'acide est bien également étendu lorsque la surface de la plaque est couverte d'un voile régulier sur toute son étendue. Ensuite on saupoudre la plaque de ponce, et, avec du coton qui n'a pas servi on la frotte très légèrement. Alors la plaque doit être soumise à une forte chaleur on la place sur le châssis de fil de fer, et on promène dessous la lampe à l'esprit-de-vin jusqu'à ce qu'il se forme à la surface de l'argent une légère couche blanchâtre. On fait ensuite refroidir promptement la plaque en la plaçant sur un corps froid, tel qu'une table de marbre. Lorsqu'elle est refroidie, il faut la polir de nouveau, c'est-à-dire enlever la couche blanchâtre. Lorsque l'argent frotté à sec avec le tampon est bien bruni, on le frotte avec l'acide étendu d'eau, et on le saupoudre de nouveau d'un peu de ponce en frottant très légèrement avec un tampon de coton, Il faut éviter la vapeur humide de l'haleine, ainsi que les taches de salive et
le frottement des doigts.
Deuxième opération. Pour cette opération, il faut la planchette fig. (p. 570), la boîte (fig. 2, et un flacon d'iode.
Après avoir fixé la plaque sur une planchette au moyen de bandes métalliques et de petits clous, comme elle est indiquée figure 1), il faut mettre de l'iode divisé dans la capsule qui se trouve au fond de la boite. On place la planchette, le métal en dessous, sur les petits goussets placés aux quatre angles de la boîte dont on ferme le couvercle. Dans cette position, il faut la laisser jusqu'à ce que la surface de l'argent soit couverte d'une belle couche jaune d'or. Il est indispensable de regarder de temps en temps pour s'assurer si elle a atteint le degré de jaune nécessaire; mais la lumière ne doit pas frapper directement dessus. Aussi faut-il mettre la boite dans une pièce obscure où le jour n'arrive que très faiblement, et lorsqu'on veut regarder la plaque, après avoir ôté le couvercle de la boîte, on prend la planchette par les extrémités avec les deux mains, et on la retourne promptement ; il suffit alors que la plaque réfléchisse un endroit peu éclairé et autant que possible éloigné pour qu'on s'aperçoive si la couleur jaune est assez foncée. On remet très promptement la plaque sur la boite si la couche n'a pas atteint le ton jaune d'or; si, au contraire, cette teinte était dépassée, ta couche ne pourrait pas servir, et il faudrait recommencer entièrement la première opération. Lorsque la plaque est arrivée au degré de jaune nécessaire, il faut emboîter la planchette dans un châssis, comme il est indiqué dans la figure 5. Le jour ne doit pas frapper sur la planche; tout au plus peut-on se servir d'une bougie. On passe ensuite à la troisième opération. Si l'intervalle entre la deuxième et la troisième opération était de plus d'une heure, la combinaison de l'iode et de l'argent n'aurait plus la même propriété.
Troisième opération. L'appareil nécessaire à cette opération se borne à la chambre noire figure 4. On place la boite de la chambre noire devant la vue que l'on veut reproduire, en choisissant de préférence les objets éclairés vivement par le soleil. Les moments les plus favorables sont entre sept heures du matin et trois heures après midi. Après avoir placé convenablement la chambre obscure, il est essentiel de bien mettre au foyer, c'est-à-dire de reculer ou avancer la double boite BB de l'appareil jusqu'à ce que l'image de la nature apparaisse en traits parfaitement distincts sur la glace dépolie A. Lorsqu'on a atteint une grande précision, on remplace cette glace dépolie par le châssis figure 5, et on en ouvre les portes AA de manière à ce que la couche d'iode reçoive l'impression de la vue ou des objets que l'on a choisis. Il ne reste plus alors qu'à ouvrir le diaphragme E et à laisser agir la nature.
Cette opération est très délicate, et l'on n'y réussit qu'après avoir acquis une certaine expérience. En effet, il est de toute impossibilité de déterminer le temps nécessaire à la reproduction puisqu'il dépend entièrement de l'intensité de lumière des objets que l'on veut reproduire, et que l'action de cette lumière est complétement invisible. Cependant il est très important de ne point dépasser le temps nécessaire pour la reproduction, parce que les clairs ne seraient plus blancs; ils seraient noircis. Si, au contraire, le temps n'était pas suffisant, l'épreuve serait vague et sans détails. Ce temps peut varier pour Paris de trois ou quatre minutes aux mois de juin et de juillet, et de cinq ou six minutes dans les mois de mai et d'août, de sept à huit en avril et en septembre, et ainsi de suite dans la même proportion, à mesure qu'on avance dans la saison. Ceci n'est, du reste, qu'une donnée générale pour les objets très éclairés car il arrive souvent qu'il faut vingt minutes dans les mois les plus favorables, lorsque les objets sont entièrement dans la demi-teinte.
Quatrième opération. II faut pour cette opération
l'appareil fig. 5, un flacon de mercure contenant au moins un kilo, une lampe à l'esprit-de-vin, un entonnoir. La plaque, lorsqu'on la retire de la chambre noire, a conservé sa teinte uniforme de jaune d'or, et semble n'avoir subi aucune modification. L'empreinte de l'image de la nature existe sur la plaque mais elle n'est pas visible. Il s'agit, dans la quatrième opération, de la rendre visible. C'est pourquoi l'on transporte subitement la plaque dans la boîte (fig. t), où, placée sur des tasseaux qui la tiennent inclinée à 45 degrés, elle est exposée (A) à un courant ascendant de vapeur mercurielle qui s'élève d'une capsule (B) dans laquelle le liquide est monté par l'action d'une lampe à esprit-de-vin (c). Cette vapeur s'attache en abondance aux parties de la surface de la plaque qu'une vive lumière a frappées elle laisse intactes les régions restées dans l'ombre; enfin elle se précipite sur les espaces qu'occupaient les demi teintes. Un verre adapté à la boite (P) permet de suivre du regard, à la faible lumière d'une bougie, la formation graduelle de l'image. On voit la vapeur mercurielle, comme un pinceau de la plus extrême délicatesse, marquer du ton convenable chaque partie de la plaque.
Un thermomètre adapté à la boîte indique le moment où l'on doit retirer la lampe esprit-de-vin; c'est lorsqu'il marque 60 degrés centigrades. En générât, il faut laisser la plaque dans l'appareil jusqu'à ce que le thermomètre soit descendu à 45 degrés, quelquefois auparavant si la lumière a été très vive.
Cinquième opération. L'image est alors reproduite mais il faut empêcher que la lumière ne l’altère. On arrive à ce résultat en agitant la plaque dans de l’eau saturée de sel marin, ou dans une solution d'hyposulfite de soude, et en la lavant ensuite avec de l'eau distillée chaude. Après ce lavage qui exige beaucoup de précautions, l'épreuve est terminée. H ne reste plus qu'à préserver la plaque de la poussière et des vapeurs qui pourraient ternir l'argent. Le mercure qui dessine les images est en partie décomposé ; il adhère à l'argent, il résiste à l’eau qu'on verse dessus mais il ne peut soutenir aucun frottement. Pour conserver les épreuves, il faut les mettre sous verre et les coller elle sont alors inaltérables, même au soleil.

A Feuille d'argent plaqué fixée sur une planchette au moyen de quatre petites bandes BBBB en argent plaqué, de même épaisseur que la plaque. On fixe ces bandes avec de petits clous elles retiennent la plaque par de petites saillies sondées dessus. Leur utilité est de faciliter l’égalisation de la couche d'iode, qui sans elles serait beaucoup plus intense sur les bords de la-plaque que dans le centre.

A Glace dépolie qui reçoit l’image de la nature. On l’avance ou on la recule, avec la double boîte à la quelle elle est attachée pour bien mettre au foyer, c’est à dire pour obtenir que les objets dont on désire fixer l’image se reproduisent sur la glace avec une grande netteté. Ensuite on remplace la glace par le châssis contenant la plaque fig. 3.Miroir qui sert à redresser les objets,
t qu’on incline à 45 degrés, tandis que l’on cherche le point de vue. Objectif achromatique et périscopique ta partie concave doit être en dehors de la chambre noire). Son diamètre est de 8 r millimètres, et son foyer de 38 centimètres. E Diaphragme placé en avant de t'objectif, a une distance de 68 millimètres.

Or the Daguerreotype
Among the inventions that since the beginning of the century have excited a universal interest, that of the Daguerreotype is certainly one of the most extraordinary. For a long time, it was enshrouded in a mystery favorable to incredulity; but now admiration in itself is permissible. The State, which just acquired the patent in the interests of arts and sciences heralded the news through publicity; it is then a duty in a manner of speaking for the organs of the press to bring the discovery of Mr. Daguerre to the attention of largest number of persons, and popularize his methods, for which the curious and ingenious spirits in all places are called to make use of, and to place on the path of gradual refinement.
To better understand photography, it is necessary to have previously some notion of what is the dark room, that is also called an obscure chamber. This is how Mr. Arago tells the story of this latest invention.
A Neapolitan physician, Jean Baptise Porta, recognized around two centuries ago, that if one pierces a very small hole in the blinds of a well-sealed room, or even better in a thin metallic plate, applied to this blind, all the objects whose rays can reach the hole will appear on the opposite wall of the room, with reduced or magnified dimensions according to their distances, and with their natural colors. Porta discovered, a little time afterwards, that the hole didn’t necessarily need to be small, that it can have any size when one covers it with of these well-polished pieces of glass, with for reason of their form, are called lenses. [In French the word for lens is the same as the word for lentils.]
Porta immediately constructed one of these portable dark rooms. Each one of them was composed of a pipe more or less long, fitted with a lens; the whitish screen in paper or cardboard, on which the images would be painted, occupying the central part. This apparatus was since improved; a dull piece of glass replaced the white screen, and on the glass the light traced perfect images of the most complicated objects with a perfect lucidity of their contours, and the natural gradation of their tints. But as one knows these images are as fugitive as the reflections, like shadows; as soon as the apparatus is moved, as soon as the mirror is removed, they disappear.
Hence, these are images of the obscure room that, by the discovery of Mr. Daguerre, print themselves on a metallic surface that replaces the dull glass, and once produced and fixed, they are preserved forever. In other terms, in the Daguerrotype, the strength of the light created, in four or five minutes, of these images where the objects preserve to mathematical exactness their forms down to the smallest details, where the effects of linear perspective, and the gradation of aerial linear perspective, are charged with an exactness art has never known.
Thus no doubt, no ambiguity. A person who is entirely ignorant of drawing, can with the aid of the Daguerreotype, obtain in a few minutes images that are perfect and durable of all the objects in view that please him. It will suffice for this person to place the apparatus in a countryside, in front of a monument, in front of a statue, or in his bedroom in front of the paintings that decorate it, and in a few instants, he will have perfect reproduction: he has a drawing to frame, that he may place under glass, to suspend from the wall like an engraving which would have been executed slowly and patiently at great expense. Everyone can with this admirable invention, surround himself with precious souvenirs, have a faithful representation of his family home, of places where he has lived or admired during his travels.
One encounters nevertheless a kind of deception if one imagines all the images in nature obtained by the method of the Daguerreotype, that is necessarily a remarkable work of art, a beautiful and seductive print. To begin with, not all views of nature are agreeable. Next, all the images are reproduced without their colors; one might think them ink drawings, or rather having the appearance of impressed lead; these are not paintings. Finally, to be perfectly clear, in the current state of the invention, the light of the image has not all of the vividness, all of the warmth of daylight. The effect is most ordinarily cold and somber, as if it were given by a winter twilight: the sun appears to be absent; one might believe that the moon was in the sky while the mysterious image formed in the room. Also, we must confess that the most beautiful proofs of the Daguerreotype that we have yet seen are those that represent either monuments of a rich and florid architecture taken in favorable conditions, or those of interiors of cabinets of curiosities where are found bas-reliefs, statuettes, medals, precious objects, grouped with intention and taste. These last subjects are reproduced with a charm to despair the most able disciples of Gérard Dow, de Mieris, or de Metzu.
Despite these restrictions, the discovery is admirable, and was considered in past times a miracle, or an act of witchcraft. It is not the by chance that this discovery occurred, but is the product of the force of will after fifteen years of observation and fumbling. Let us try to in part explain this, aided by the report of Mr. Arago to the Chamber of Deputies, and the subsequent communications of the Academy of Sciences.
The alchemists succeeded in former times in uniting silver and marine acid [hydrochloric acid]; the product of the combination was a white salt, which they called moon or folded [cornered as in turning down the corner of a book is also a possible translation] silver. This salt enjoys the remarkable property of darkening the light, darkening it as fast as the rays which hit it are energetic. Cover a piece of paper with a layer of folded silver, or, as one says today, a layer of silver chloride; creates on this layer, with the aid of a lens, the image of an object; the obscure parts of an object: the dark parts of the image, the parts where no light hits remains white; the parts that are most strongly illuminated become completely black; the half-shades are represented by greys more or less dark.
These applications of the curious property of silver chloride discovered by the ancient alchemists, have preoccupied, since the beginning of our century, many illustrious learned men, among those our famous physicist Charles Wedgewood (see pg. 95), and Humphery Davy. But it is reserved to our compatriots, Mr. Niepce and Mr. Daguerre to bring to fruit these attempts and bring forth the discovery.
Mr. Niepce was one of these isolated landowners in the environs of Châons-sur-Saône. He consecrated his leisure to scientific study. He claims to have employed as early as 1814 the means to fix images in the obscure chamber. Later, he joined his efforts to those of Mr. Daguerre, who made more rapid progress toward the discovery, and who, after the death of his associate, survived him several years, and achieved by him, a more precise character that the discovery has today. An authentic correspondence between these two physicists allows no room for doubt, that in fact by the superiority of his methods, Mr. Daugerre, and by the better choice of his materials, Mr. Daugerre has more of a particular right to the title of inventor.
Here is a description of the process employed by Mr. Daugerre.
The proofs are made on silver sheets pressed on copper. The thickness of these sheets must not exceed the thickness of that of a heavy card.
The process is divided into five operations: the first consists of polishing and cleaning the plate in order to make it ready to receive the sensitive layer on which the image will be set; --the second, to apply this layer; -- the third, to place it in the dark room, the plate having been prepared for the action of the light to receive the image from nature; -- the fourth, to make visible this image, which is never visible after been removed from the dark room; -- the fifth has for its purpose to remove the sensitive layer, which will continued to be modified by the light and would tend to destroy the proof.
First operation. –Needed for this procedure: one small flask of olive oil, very fine carded cotton, extremely finely ground pumice sealed in a sachet of transparent muslin, so that the pumice can pass easily through when shaking the satchel; a flask of nitric acid diluted in water in the proportion of one part (in volume) of acid, against sixteen parts (also in volume) of distilled water; a frame of iron wire on which the plates are set to heat them with the aid of a spirit lamp. [a small stove, literally ‘spirit of wine lamp’, using an alcoholic fuel, used in both laboratory and domestic settings].
One begins by carefully polishing the plate, to achieve this effect we have the pumice dust (sprinkling it without touching the plate), and using the cotton dipped in a little olive oil, one lightly rubs the plate in circles. When the plate is well-polished, it’s a matter of deglazing it, which is again done by sprinkling the pumice and rubbing it dry with the cotton. One then makes a small pad of cotton, which must be soaked in a little diluted acid. As one rubs the plate with the pad, one must take care to evenly distribute the acid across the entirety of the plate. Then, one powders the plate lightly with pumice, and with some unused cotton, lightly rub the surface.
Then the plate must be subjected to a strong heat; one places it on the iron frame and passes it above the spirit lamp until a small whitish layer forms on the surface of the silver. One then promptly cools it down by placing it in on a cold body, such as a marble table. Once it has cooled down, one must polish it again, that is to say, to remove the whitish layer. Once the silver is rubbed and the wad is much dirtied and brown, one rubs it again with the diluted acid, and one powders it again with a little pumice, and very lightly rubs it with a wad of cotton. One must avoid the humid vapor of the breath, as well as spots of saliva and the rubbing of fingers.
Second operation. –For this operation, one needs the small board fig. 1 (pg, 376), the box fig. 2., and a flask of iodine. After aver having attached the plate on a small board by means of metallic strips and small nails, as is indicated in figure 1, one must place the iodine divided in the capsule, which is found in the interior of the box. One places the small board, the metal on top, on the small brackets placed at the four corners of the box, and shuts its lid. In such a position, it is necessary to leave the plate until the silver surface is covered with a good layer of yellow-gold. It is indispensable to look from time to time to verify if it has attained the necessary tint of yellow; however, the light must not strike directly on it. Also, one must place the box in a dark room where the light of day arrives only weakly, and when wishes to view the plate, after having lifted the box’s cover, on takes the small board by its extremities with two hands, and promptly returns it to the box; it suffices that the plate reflects a poorly lit, and as much as possible, distant corner in order to determine if the yellow is sufficiently strong. One should promptly return the plate to the box if the layer has not attained a yellowish-gold color; if, on the contrary, this tint has been exceeded, the layer cannot serve, and on must begin everything again from the first operation. Once the plate has attained the necessary yellow, one must box the small board in a frame, as is indicated in figure 5. The light of day must not hit the plate; as much as one can, one must employ a candle. One then passes to the third operation. If the interval between the second and third operations is more than an hour, the combination of the iodine and the silver will not have the same property.
Third operation. –The apparatus necessary for this operation is confined to the dark room figure 4. One places the box in the dark room in front of the view one wishes to reproduce, choosing them with a preference for objects well lit by the sun. The times most favorable are those between seven in the morning and three in the afternoon. After having suitably placed the obscure chamber, it is essential to well position it in the focal point, that is to say to push forwards or backwards the double box BB in the apparatus so that the image taken from nature appears with its traits perfectly distinguishable on the dull glass. A. Once one has attained this with great precision, one replaces the dull glass by the frame in figure 3, and covers the doors AA in a manner so that the layer of iodine receives the impressions of the view or of the chosen objects. There remains nothing else except to open the aperture E and allow nature to run its course.
This operation is very delicate, and one only succeeds after having acquired a certain experience. In effect, it is totally impossible to determine the time necessary for reproduction, as it depends entirely on the intensity of the light on the objects one wishes to reproduce, and the action of this light is completely invisible. However, it is very important never to exceed the time necessary for reproduction, because the point of light will no longer be white; they will be blackened. If, on the contrary, the time is not sufficient, the proof will be vague and without detail. This time can vary in Paris from three or four minutes in the month of June and July, and five or six minutes in the month of August, from seven to eight in April, and in September, and thus in a series of the same proportion, to measure as one advances with the seasons. This is only, moreover, a general rule for those objects very brightly lit, as it often happens that it takes twenty minutes in the most favorable months, as the objects are entirely in half-shades.
Fourth operation. – For this operation, on needs apparatus fig. 5, a flask of mercury containing at least a kilo, a spirit lamp, a funnel. The plate, once one has removed it from the dark room, conserved its uniform yellow coloring, and seemed not to have undergone any modification. The print of the image from nature exists on the plate, but it is not visible. It is a matter of rendering it visible in the fourth operation. This is why one rapidly transports the plate in the box (fig. 5), where placed on brackets that hold it inclined at a 45 degree angle, it is exposed (A) to a current of ascending mercury vapor, which rises up from a capsule (B), in which the liquid mounts by the action of a spirit lamp (C). This vapor attaches itself in abundance to the parts of the plate’s surface where a strong light struck; it leaves intact the regions that rested in shadow; finally, it precipitates on spaces that occupy the half-shades. A glass adapted to the box (P) permits one to follow by sight, in the weak light of a candle, the gradual formation of the image. One sees the mercury vapor, like a brush of the most extreme delicacy, mark a shade fit for each part of the plate.
A thermometer adapted for the box indicates the moment when one must remove the spirit lamp; it is when it registers 60 degrees centigrade. In general, one must leave the plate in the apparatus until the point when the thermometer has dropped 45 degrees, sometimes before if the light was very strong.
Fifth operation. –The image is then reproduced, but one must prevent daylight from altering it. On arrives at this result by agitating the plate in water saturated with sea salt, or in a sodium hyposulphite bath, and then washing it with distilled warm water. After this washing, which demands many precautions, the proof is finished. There remains nothing left, but to preserve the plate from the dust of vapors that could tarnish the silver. The mercury that draws the image is in part broken down; it sticks to the silver, it resists the water that one pours over it, but it cannot hold up under any rubbing. In order to preserve the proofs, one must place them under glass and glue them there; they are then permanently fixed, even in the sun.

A Sheet of pleated silver fixed on a small board by means of four small strips B B B B in pleated silver, the same thickness as the plate. One attaches theses strips with small nails; they hold the plate with small welded lips. Their use is to facilitate the even distribution of the layer of iodine, which without them would be much thicker on the plate’s edges than in its center.

One advances or pulls it back, with the double box B to which it is attached, to carefully place it in the focal point, that is to say to obtain that the objects on which one wishes to focus the image are reproduced on the glass with a clear precision. Let us add that the method of converting the Daguerreotype proofs in etched plates has just been discovered. And so each image obtained by the process, which we have just explained can be reproduced, as in all types of engravings, on a considerable number of copies.

My knowledge of French is the fruit of long years of study and immersion in French life. I graduated cum laude with a degree in French literature from NYU where I did an honor’s thesis on Proust and gastronomy. I spent my junior year aboard studying at the University of Paris 7, as well as with the NYU master’s program; I had previously studied for a year in France in high school, when I lived with a host family. The summer after my junior year in Paris I worked as an editorial intern at the French political weekly Marianne where I wrote articles on international affairs for their site; I also received an undergraduate research grant to write two twin short stories in French and English, variations on a theme in the palate of language. My knowledge of French literature extends to contemporary voices, and was marked by my experience working as an editorial intern at Europa Editions in New York evaluating contemporary novels for publication and translation.
I also have an intimate knowledge of Spanish, particularly its Chilean variant, from my time living there, and my university studies prior to and subsequent to my stay. Chile is known for its rich and unique vocabulary; speakers pepper the language with idioms and words that are unknown in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world. While I lived there, I was able to both collaborate with poets from Concepción where I lived, and take part in, and report on the contemporary music scene. I also used my skills to help local business owners with translations and proofreading for transactions with foreign companies and investors, and have continued to work with some of my clients since returning to the United States.
