English to Chinese: Laugh Killer Laugh (2015) General field: Other Detailed field: Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
Source text - English The night never knew a shade darker than his soul. That's what everybody used to say about Frank Stone. Like a clap of thunder, he was brought into the world, and like a flash of lightning, he lived. And that was pulling off jewelry jobs. It was his vice. It gave him comfort, control. And he would stop at nothing to get it done. Nothing. He was as serious as a heart attack.
Translation - Chinese 「

is Scott Macintyre.
Being visually impaired has never slowed him down.

I like you, I think you’re very talented.
I think your relationship with your instrument is really where we get to see who Scott as the artist would be.

Translation - English Coated by seemingly peace is the skeptical tension between the UK and Russia in the 70s. Intending to get certain information, “Control”- the commander of “Circus” the British intelligence- conducts a mission in Budapest, Hungary. But when the mission fails, it becomes clear that a “mole” in the British agency has been leaking information to the Soviet intelligence. Control has to resign for the failure. Meanwhile, Smiley- Control’s most trusted agent- is urged to retire along with the resignation. However, all these are just the beginning of a darker conspiracy. As Smiley embarks on the investigation of the mole, which is suspected to be one of the best agents in the Circus, truth unveils bit by bit.
The first thing you’d probably notice about this film is the title- “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy-” it seems more like a rhythm than a name for a film; and in fact, it is both. The movie’s screen play sets base on a spy novel published in the 70s, after which it is named. And this tongue-teisting title indeed comes from a well-known children’s rhythm sung as “Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Rich man Poor man Beggar man Thief.” These, when used as code names, could serve as a perfect material for a spy narrative: true identities are always disguised. And this is how Control refers to his best agents to uncover the mole: Alleline as the Tinker, Haydon as the
Tailor, Bland as the Soldier, Esterhase the Poorman, and Smiley as the Beggarman. Tension then rises towards the peak as Smiley gets closer to the truth.
We often find different names for the same thing in English and in Chinese. “There’s a rotten apple, Jim” so Control reveals his true intention for the Budapest Scheme to his colleague after the mission fails. “Rotten apple,” directly translated here, isn’t at all strange to oriental audience, for it often appears this way; in fact, too often that it almost makes us forget the authentically oriental synonym “rat excrement,” which derives from a well-known proverb “One piece of rat excrement spoils a whole pot of rice congee.” (This stands the same meaning as “One bad apple can spoil the whole bunch.”)

English to Chinese: Fur Farming in China 中國的毛皮業 General field: Other Detailed field: Livestock / Animal Husbandry
Source text - English Commercial fox farming in China began in 1860. As fur farming expanded into a major industry in the West, China began to follow suit by the mid 1950s. From 1956, breeding foxes for fur became more widespread. At the time some 200,000 foxes were added to the country’s fur farms each year. Collectively they churned out more than a million skins a year. As China began to open up commercially between the 1980s and 90s, the country’s fur industry boomed. Next to traditional state-run farms, numerous private and family run farms started to spring up. During the 1990s, the sector attracted foreign investments, which lead to the establishment of even more fur farms. To date, Chinese fur farmers hold four million foxes and an estimated four million raccoon dogs and ten mink s and the production is growing rapidly. China is now the world’s leading producer of fox and raccoon dog pelts and the second largest producer of mink pelts. Many farms are facing inbreeding related problems, which lead to a gradually deterioration of fur quality. In 2005-06, Finish fur breeders exported 10'000 foxes to China for breeding purposes. Many of the foxes did not survive the ordeal of the long travel. Heilongjiang Province has also seen the establishment of a fox farm, which specializes solely in breeding. One farm owner stated that similar enterprises are soon to be initiated in Hebei as well. Other fur related business ventures include the sale of Finnish blue fox sperm and instruction in artificial insemination techniques.
