Escribí estos cuentos durante los mundiales de 1986 y 1990 para Página/12 e Il Manifesto de Roma. Así, en la concentración de Trigoria, una noche conocí a Diego Maradona. Al comienzo fingí no interesarme en él con el propósito de lastimar su orgullo y ganarme su atención. Entonces, para impresionarme, se puso una naranja sobre la cabeza y la hizo bailar por todas las curvas del cuerpo sin que se cayera ni una sola vez. Por fin la atrapó y sin fijarse en mí le preguntó a su amigo Gianni Minà, que me había llevado con él: “¿Qué tal, ¿Cuántas veces la toqué con el brazo?” Yo estaba embobado. “¡Nunca!”, respondimos a coro. Maradona sonrió y dijo con voz de pícaro: “Sí, una vez, pero no hay referí en el mundo que pueda verme”. Tenía tanta razón que me fui corriendo al hotel y escribí un cuento sobre el hijo de Butch Cassidy, cowboy, filósofo y árbitro de fútbol.
El Mundial de 1942 no figura en ningún libro de historia pero se jugó en la Patagonia argentina sin sponsors ni periodistas y en la final ocurrieron cosas tan extrañas como que se jugó sin descanso durante un día y una noche, los arcos y la pelota desaparecieron y el temerario hijo de Butch Cassidy despojó a Italia de todos sus títulos.
Mi tío Casimiro, que nunca había visto de cerca una pelota de fútbol, fue juez de línea en la final y años más tarde escribió unas memorias fantásticas, llenas de desaciertos históricos y de insanias ahora irremediables por falta de mejores testigos.
La guerra en Europa había interrumpido los mundiales. Los dos últimos, en 1934 y 1938, los había ganado Italia y los obreros piamonteses y emilianos que construían la represa de Barda del Medio en la Argentina y las rutas de Villarrica en Chile se sentían campeones para siempre. Entre los obreros que trabajaban de sol a sol también había indios mapuches conocidos por sus artes de ilusionismo y magia y sobre todo europeos escapados de la guerra. Había españoles que monopolizaban los almacenes de comida, italianos de Génova, Calabria y Sicilia, polacos, franceses, algunos ingleses que alargaban los ferrocarriles de Su Majestad, unos pocos guaraníes del Paraguay y los argentinos que avanzaban hacía la lejana Tierra del Fuego. Todos estaban allí porque aún no había llegado el telégrafo y se sentían a salvo del terrible mundo donde habían nacido.
Hacia abril, cuando bajó el calor y se calmó el viento del desierto, llegaron sorpresivamente los electrotécnicos del Tercer Reich que instalaban la primera línea de teléfonos del Pacífico al Atlántico. Con ellos traían una punta del cable que inauguraba la era de las comunicaciones y la primera pelota del mundo a válvula automática que decían haber inventado en Hamburgo. Luego de mostrarla en el patio del corralón para admiración de todos desafiaron a quien se animara a jugarles un partido internacional. Un ingeniero de nombre Celedonio Sosa, que venía de Balvanera, aceptó el reto en nombre de toda la nación argentina y formó un equipo de vagos y borrachos que volvían decepcionados de buscar oro en las hondonadas de la Cordillera de los Andes.
El atrevimiento fue catastrófico para los argentinos que perdieron seis a uno con un pésimo arbitraje del William Brett Cassidy, que se decía hijo natural del cowboy Butch Cassidy que antes de morir acribillado en Bolivia vivió muchos años en las estancias de la Patagonia con el Sundance Kid y Edna, la amante de los dos.
No bien advirtieron la diversidad de países y razas representados ese rincón de la tierra, los alemanes lanzaron la idea de un campeonato mundial que debía eternizar con la primera llamada telefónica su paso civilizador por aquellos confines del planeta. El primer problema para los organizadores fue que los italianos antifascistas se negaban a poner juego su condición de campeones porque eso implicaba reconocer los títulos conseguidos por los profesionales del régimen de Mussolini.
Algunos irresponsables, ganados por la curiosidad de patear una pelota completamente redonda y sin tiento, se dejaban apabullar por los alemanes a la caída del sol mientras la línea del teléfono avanzaba por la cordillera hacia las obras del dique: un combinado de almaceneros gallegos e intelectuales franceses perdió por siete a cero y un equipo de curas polacos y desarraigados guaraníes cayó por cinco a cero en una cancha improvisada al borde del río Limay.
Nadie recordaba bien las reglas del juego ni cuánto tiempo debía jugarse ni las dimensiones del terreno, de manera que lo único prohibido era tocar la pelota con las manos y golpear en la cabeza a los jugadores caídos. Cualquier persona con criterio para juzgar esas dos infracciones podía ser el árbitro, y así fue como mi tío y el hijo de Butch Cassidy se hicieron famosos y respetables hasta que por fin llegó el teléfono.
Hubo un momento en que la posición principista de los italianos se volvió insostenible. ¿Cómo seguir proclamándose campeones de una Copa que ni siquiera reconocían, cuando los alemanes goleaban a quien se les pusiera adelante? ¿Podían seguir soportando las pullas y las bromas de los visitantes que los acusaban de no atreverse a jugar por temor a la humillación?
En mayo, cuando empezaron las lloviznas, el capataz calabrés Giorgio Casciolo advirtió que, con la arena mojada, la pelota empezaba a rebotar para cualquier parte y que los enviados del Führer, que ya probaban el teléfono en secreto y abusaban de la cerveza, no las tenían todas consigo. En un nuevo partido contra los guaraníes el resultado, luego de dos horas de juego sin descanso, fue apenas de cinco a dos. En otro, los ingleses que colocaban las vías del ferrocarril se pusieron cuatro goles a cinco cuando se hizo de noche y los alemanes argumentaron que había que guardar la pelota para que no se perdiera entre los espesos matorrales. A fin de mes los pescadores del Limay, que eran casi todos chilenos, perdieron por cuatro a dos porque William Brett Cassidy concedió dos penales a favor de los alemanes por manos cometidas muy lejos del arco.
Una noche de juerga en el prostíbulo de Zapala, mientras un ingeniero de Baden-Baden trataba de captar noticias sobre el frente ruso en la radio de la señora Fanny-La-Joly, un anarquista genovés de nombre Mancini, al que le habían robado los pantalones, se puso a vivar al proletariado de Barda del Medio y salió a los pasillos a gritar que ni los alemanes ni los rusos eran invencibles. En el lugar no había ningún ruso que pudiera darse por aludido, pero el ingeniero alemán dio un salto, levantó el brazo y aceptó el desafío. El capataz Casciolo, que estaba en una habitación vecina con los pantalones puestos, escuchó la discusión y temió que la Copa de 1938 empezara a alejarse para siempre de Italia.
A la madrugada, mientras regresaban a Barda del Medio a borde de un Ford A, los italianos decidieron jugarse el título y defenderlo con todo el honor que fuera posible en ese tiempo y en ese lugar. Sólo cinco o seis de ellos habían jugado alguna vez al fútbol pero uno, el anarquista Mancini, había pasado su infancia en un colegio de curas en el que le enseñaron a correr con una pelota pegada a los pies.
Al día siguiente la noticia corrió por todos los andamios de la obra gigantesca: los campeones del mundo aceptaban poner en juego su Copa. Los mapuches no sabían de qué se trataba pero creían que la Copa poseía los secretos de los blancos que los habían diezmado en las guerras de conquista.Los ingleses lamentaban que sus enemigos alemanes se quedaran con la gloria de aquel infierno de calor y de arena y en secreto tramaban un sistema defensivo para impedir otra goleada alemana. Los guaraníes habían hecho la guerra por el petróleo con Bolivia y estaban acostumbrados a los rigores del desierto aunque no tenían más de tres o cuatro hombres que conocieran una pelota de fútbol. También formaron equipos los curas y obreros polacos, los intelectuales franceses y los almaceneros españoles. Los franceses no eran suficientes y, para completar los once, pidieron autorización para incorporar a tres pescadores chilenos.
Los alemanes insistieron en que todo se hiciera de acuerdo con las reglas que ellos creían recordar: había que sortear tres grupos y se jugaría en los lugares adonde llegaría el teléfono, para llamar a Berlín y dar la noticia. William Brett Cassidy insistió en que los árbitros fueran autorizados a llevar un revólver para hacer respetar su autoridad y, como la mayoría de los jugadores entraban en la cancha borrachos y a veces armados de cuchillos, se aprobó la iniciativa.
Se limpiaron a machetazos tres terrenos de cien metros y como nadie recordaba las medidas de los arcos se los hizo de diez metros de ancho y dos de altura. No había redes para contener la pelota pero tanto Cassidy como mi tío Casimiro, que oficiarían de árbitros, se manifestaron capaces de medir con un golpe de vista si la pelota pasaba por adentro o por afuera del rectángulo.
El sorteo de las sedes y los partidos se hizo con el sistema de la paja más corta. La inauguración en Barda del Medio, quedó para la Italia campeona y el aguerrido equipo de los guaraníes. Al otro lado del río, en Villa Centenario, jugaron alemanes, franceses y argentinos, y sobre la ruta de tierra, cerca del prostíbulo, se enfrentaron españoles, ingleses y mapuches.
En todos los partidos hubo incidentes de arma blanca y las obras del dique tuvieron que suspenderse por los graves rebotes de nacionalismo que provocaba el campeonato. En la inauguración Italia les ganó cuatro a uno a los guaraníes que no tenían otra bandera que la de Paraguay. En las otras canchas salieron vencedores los alemanes contra los franceses y los indios mapuches se llevaron por delante a los ingleses y a los almaceneros españoles por cinco o seis goles de diferencia.
Los dos primeros heridos fueron guaraníes que no acataron las decisiones de Cassidy. El referí tuvo que emprenderla a culatazos para hacer ejecutar un penal a favor de Italia. Al otro lado del río, mi tío Casimiro tuvo que disparar contra un delantero mapuche que se guardó la pelota debajo de la camisa y empezó a correr como loco hacia el arco británico en el segundo partido de la serie. Los mapuches tuvieron dos o tres bajas pero ganaron la zona porque los británicos se empecinaron en un fair play digno de los terrenos de Cambridge.
La memoria escrita por mi tío flaquea y tal vez confunde de aquellos acontecimientos olvidados. Cuenta que hubo tres finalistas: Alemania, Italia y los mapuches sin patria. La bandera del Tercer Reich flameó más alta que las otras durante todo el campeonato sobre las obras del dique pero por las noches alguien le disparaba salvas de escopeta. William Brett Cassidy permitió que los alemanes eliminaran a la Argentina gracias a la expulsión de sus dos mejores defensores. Es verdad que el arquero cordobés se defendía a piedrazos cuando los alemanes se acercaban al arco, pero ése era un recurso que usaban todos los defensores cuando estaban en peligro. Antes de cada partido, los hinchas acumulaban pilas de cascotes detrás de cada arco y al final de los enfrentamientos, una vez retirados los heridos, se juntaban también las piedras que quedaban dentro del terreno.
En la semifinal ocurrieron algunas anormalidades que Cassidy no pudo controlar. Los alemanes se presentaron con cascos para protegerse las cabezas y algunos llevaban alfileres casi invisibles para utilizar en los amontonamientos. Los italianos quemaron un emblema fascista y entonaron a Verdi pero entraron en la cancha escondiendo puñados de pimienta colorada para arrojar a los ojos de sus adversarios.
Cassidy quiso darle relieve al acontecimiento y sorteó los arcos con un dólar de oro, pero no bien la moneda cayó al suelo alguien se la robó y ahí se produjo el primer revuelo. El capitán alemán acusó de ladrón y de comunista a un cocinero italiano que por las noches leía a Lenin encerrado en una letrina del corralón. En aquel lugar nada estaba prohibido, pero los ruses eran mal vistos por casi todos y el cocinero fue expulsado de la cancha por rebelión y lecturas contagiosas. Antes de dar por iniciado el partido, Cassidy lanzó una arenga bastante dura sobre el peligro de mezclar el fútbol con la política y después se retiró a mirar el partido desde un montículo de arena, a un costado de la cancha.
Como no tenía silbato y las cosas se presentaban difíciles, él sólo bajaba de la colina revólver en mano para apartar a los jugadores que se trenzaban a golpes. Cassidy disparaba al aire y aunque algunos espectadores escondidos entre los matorrales le respondían con salvas de escopeta, el testimonio de mi tío asegura que afrontó las tres horas de juego con un coraje digno de la memoria de su padre.
Cassidy hizo durar el juego tanto tiempo porque los italianos resistían con bravura y mucho polvo de pimienta el ataque alemán y en los contragolpes el anarquista Mancini se escapaba como una anguila entre los defensores demasiado adelantados. Hubo momentos en que Italia, que jugaba con un hombre menos, estuvo arriba dos a uno y tres a dos pero la caída del sol alguien le devolvió a Cassidy su dólar de oro en una tabaquera donde había por lo menos veinte monedas más. Entonces el hijo de Butch Cassidy decidió entrar en el terreno y poner las cosas en orden.
En un corner, Mancini fue a buscar la pelota de cabeza pero un defensor alemán le pinchó el cuello con un alfiler y cuando el italiano fue a protestar, Cassidy le puso el revólver en la cabeza y lo expulsó sin más trámite. Luego, cuando descubrió que los italianos usaban pimienta colorada para alejar a los delanteros rivales, detuvo el juego y sancionó tres penales en favor de los alemanes. El capataz Casciolo, furioso por tanta parcialidad, se interpuso entre el arquero y el hombre que iba a tirar los penales pero Cassidy volvió a cargar el revólver y lo hirió en un pie. Un ingeniero prusiano bastante tímido, que había jugado todo el partido recitando el Eclesiastés, se puso los anteojos para ejecutar los penales (Cassidy había contado sólo nueve pasos de distancia) y anotó dos goles. Enseguida el hijo de Butch Cassidy dio por terminado el partido y así se le escapó a Italia la Copa que había ganado en 1934 y 1938.
Los alemanes se fueron a festejar al prostíbulo y ni siquiera imaginaron que los mapuches bajados de los Andes pudieran ganarles la final como ocurrió tres días más tarde, un domingo gris que la historia no recuerda. Ese día el teléfono empezó a funcionar y, a las tres de la tarde, Berlín respondió a la primera llamada desde la Patagonia. Toda la comarca fue a la cancha a ver el partido y el flamante teléfono negro traído por los alemanes. Un regimiento basado en la frontera con Chile envió su mejor tropa para tocar los himnos nacionales y custodiar el orden pero los mapuches no tenían país reconocido ni música escrita ejecutaron una danza que invocaba el auxilio de sus dioses.
Mi tío, que ofició de juez de línea, anota en su memoria que a poco de comenzado el partido aparecieron bailando sobre las colinas unas mujeres de pecho desnudo y enseguida empezó a llover y a caer granizo. En medio de la tormenta y las piedras, Cassidy pensó en suspender el partido, pero los alemanes ya habían anunciado la victoria por teléfono y se negaron a postergar el acontecimiento. Pronto la cancha se convirtió en un pantano y los jugadores se embarraron hasta hacerse irreconocibles. Después, sin que nadie se diera cuenta, los arcos desaparecieron y, por más que se jugó sin parar hasta la hora de la cena, ya no había dónde convertir los goles. A medianoche, cuando la lluvia arreciaba, Cassidy detuvo el juego y conferenció con mi tío para aclarar la situación. Los alemanes dijeron haber visto unas mujeres que se llevaban los postes y de inmediato al árbitro otorgó seis penales de castigo contra los mapuches pero nadie encontró los arcos para poder tirarlos. Una partida del ejército salió a buscarlos, pero nunca más se supo de ella. El juego tuvo que seguir en plena oscuridad porque Berlín reclamaba el resultado, pero ya ni siquiera había pelota y al amanecer todos corrían detrás de una ilusión que picaba aquí o allá, según lo quisieran unos u otros.
A la salida del sol, el teléfono sonó en medio del desierto y todo el mundo se detuvo a escuchar. El ingeniero jefe pidió a Cassidy que detuviera el juego por unos instantes pero fue inútil: los mapuches seguían corriendo, saltando y arrojándose al suelo como si todavía hubiera una pelota. Los alemanes, curiosas o inquietos pero seguramente agotados, fueron a descolgar el teléfono y escucharon la voz de su Führer que iniciaba un discurso en alguna parte de la patria lejana. Nadie más se movió entonces y el susurro alborotado del teléfono corrió por todo el terreno en aquel primer Mundial de la era de las comunicaciones.
En ese momento de quietud, uno de los arcos apareció de pronto en lo alto de una colina, a la vista de todos, y las mujeres reanudaron su danza sin música. Una de ellas, la más gorda y coloreada de fiesta, fue al encuentro de la pelota que caía de muy alto, de cualquier parte, y con una caricia de la cabeza la dejó dormida frente a los palos para que un bailarín descalzo que reía a carcajadas la empujara derecho al gol.
William Brett Cassidy anuló la jugada a balazos, pero en su memoria alucinada mi tío dio el gol como válido. Lástima que olvidó anotar otros detalles y el nombre de aquel alegre goleador de los mapuches.

Translation - English The Son of Butch Cassidy – by Osvaldo Soriano
I wrote these stories in the heat of the Mexico ’86 and Italia ’90 World Cups for Página 12 and Il Manifesto de Roma. So, one night in the bedlam of Trigoria, Rome, I met Diego Maradona. Originally, I pretended to not be bothered about him as a way of hurting his pride and getting him to notice me. Then, as a way of astounding me, he placed an orange on top of his head and volleyed it up and down all over his body without it ever falling to the ground. Finally, he caught it and without even looking at me he asked his friend, Gianni Minà, who had taken me with him: “So, how many times did I touch it with my arm?” I was stunned. “Never!” we both replied as one. Maradona grinned and said mischievously: “Well, it was once, but there’s no ref in the world who cannotice me.” He had hit the nail on the head to the extent that I dashed to the hotel and wrote a story about the son of Butch Cassidy – cowboy, philosopher and football referee.
You won’t find the 1942 World Cup in any history book, yet it was played in the Argentine region of Patagonia without any sponsors or journalists. The final included events which were so bizarre that that it was played non-stop for a whole day and night, the goalposts and ball vanished and the rash offspring of Butch Cassidy stripped Italy of all its World Cup victories.
My uncle Casimiro, yet to witness a football close up, acted as linesman in the final. Years later, he penned some amazing memoirs, full of historical inaccuracies and absurdities but which are now irrevocable due to a lack of credible witnesses.
World War Two in Europe had disrupted the World Cups. The last two, 1934 and 1938, had been won by Italy. And yet labourers from Piedmont and Emilia, (provinces of North West Italy) who were building both the Barda del Medio dam in Argentina and roads from Villarrica in Chile, felt like they’d never stop being champions. Amongst the labourers working from dawn to dusk were not only indigenous Mapuches (from South Central Chile and South West Argentina), famous for their powers of magic and wizardry, but especially Europeans who had fled the war. There were Spaniards who would take over the food stores, Italians from Genoa, Calabria and Sicily, Polish, French, some English who were extending the railways of King George VI, as well as a handful ofParaguayan Guaraní and Argentine people who were slowly moving towards the distant tip of Tierra del Fuego. They were all there because the radio was yet to reach them and they felt safe from the awful world which they had been born into.
By April, when both the heat and desert wind had subsided, there was the unexpected influx of electrical equipment from the Nazi Third Reich who were fitting the first transatlantic telephone lines. They brought with them one end of the wire which unveiled the age of communication and the world’s first ever automatic ball valve said to have originated in Hamburg. After showing it off to the approval of everyone in the yard of the flats, they challenged anyone who felt inspired to play an international football match. An engineer called Celedonio Sosa, from Balvanera in Buenos Aires, took up the challenge on behalf of Argentina. He arranged a team of tramps and drunkards who had returned disillusioned from seeking gold in the hollows of the Andes Mountain Range.
The self-assurance of the Argentinian side was disastrous as they went down 6-1 due to abysmal refereeing by William Brett Cassidy, said to be the biological offspring of cowboy Butch Cassidy. Before being gunned down in Bolivia, Butch Cassidy lived for many years on ranches in Patagonia along with the Sundance Kid and their mutual lover, Edna.
No sooner had they noticed the variety of countries and races embodied in that corner of the world, the Germans came up with the brainwave of a world championship that would go down in history with the first phone call and make an edifying contribution in that far-flung recess of the planet. The first issue for the coordinators was that the antifascist Italians were digging their heels in and refusing to play in conditions which didn’t befit their World Cup status. For that suggested the need to acknowledge the titles obtained by experts from the Mussolini rule.
Swayed by the novelty of kicking around a completely round ball, some carefree rebels were left dazzled by the Germans as the sun set while the telephone line was progressing through the Andes towards the dam construction site: a mixture of Galician grocers and French academics were thrashed 7-0. Similarly, a side of Polish priests and displaced Guaraní people were crushed 5-0 on a makeshift pitch by the River Limay.
Nobody could really remember the rules or how much time the game should last or the size of the pitch. So, the only actions banned were handball and head-butting players who were splayed out on the ground. Anybody with the principles to judge these two violations could act as referee, and so it was that my uncle and the son of Butch Cassidy became renowned and honourable until the telephone finally arrived.
There was one instance when the Italians’ balanced layout became untenable. How could they go on boasting about being World Champions of some Cup which nobody identified with while the Germans were scoring goals by anyone who could move forward? Could they continue to tolerate the barbs and jokes of the away team who were blaming them for not daring to play through fear of shame?
In May,with the onset of drizzle, Giorgio Casciolo, the skipper from Calabria in Southern Italy, warned that wet sand was causing the ball to bounce all over the place and Hitler’s agents, who were secretly trying to make phone calls and binging on beer, just couldn’t get it together. In a separate match against the Guaraní side following two hours constant play, the score was only just 5-2. In a different game the English, who had been laying the railway tracks, were just 5-4 behind when night fell and the Germans contended that they had to keep the ball so it wouldn’t be lost in the dense scrubland. By the end of May the fishermen from the Limay who were almost exclusively from Chile, were defeated 4-2 because William Brett Cassidy awarded two penalties to the Germans for handball executed a long way from the goal.
There was one night of carousing in a brothel in Zapala, Patagonia, which stands out. Whilst an engineer from Baden-Baden, Germany, was attempting to pick up news about the Russian front on a radio belonging to a certain Fanny-La-Joly, Mancini, a revolutionary from Genoa, whose trousers had been stolen, began cheering the working classes from the village of Barda del Medio. He then dashed through the corridors bellowing that neither the Germans nor the Russians were unbeatable. In the brothel there were no Russians on hand able to take a hint, but the German engineer leapt up, raised his arm and agreed to the challenge. The skipper Casciolo, who was in a neighbouring room with his trousers on, heard the argument and feared that the 1938 World Cup would begin to drift away from Italy for ever.
At dawn, while returning to Barda del Medio perched on the side of a Ford Model A, the Italians chose to gamble with their title and defend it with all the pride possible from that era. There were only five or six of them who had ever played football before but one, Mancini the rebel, had spent his childhood in a seminary where he was taught how to run with a ball stuck to his feet.
The following day, word spread throughout the scaffolds of the construction site: the World Champions agreed to defend their title. The indigenous Mapuche people did not know what all the hoo-hah was about but they believed that the World Cup held secrets of the white people who had massacred them during the wars of conquest.The English were tetchy that their German rivals were left with the triumph from that purgatory of heat and sand, and they were covertly hatching a resistance plot to prevent another German hammering. The Guaraní people had fought for oil with Bolivia and were hardened to the desert harshness, however, there weren’t more than three or four men who even recognised an actual football. The Polish priests and labourers also arranged teams as did the French academics and Spanish grocers. In fact, the French side was three short and, to make up eleven men, asked permission for three Chilean fishermen to join up.
The Germans maintained that everything be done in line with the rules which they thought they could remember: it was necessary to draw lots for three groups to contest matches on sites where the telephone would reach, in order to call Berlin and keep them updated. William Brett Cassidy demanded that officials be allowed to carry a pistol to uphold their power and this proposal was agreed, given that most of the players tended to wander onto the pitch blotto and often carrying knives.
On three sites, each measuring one hundred metres, vegetation was hacked through and because nobody could remember the correct sizes of goalposts, these became ten metres wide by two metres high. Yet there were no nets to catch the ball. However, both Cassidy and my uncle Casimiro, both actingas officials, proved well capable of judging at a glance whether a ball had passed into or stayed outside the box.
The selection for both venues and matches was made by drawing lots. The opening game in Barda del Medio was just for the Italian champions and the team representing the Guaraní people. On the other side of the river in the Buenos Aires province of Villa Centenario, the German, French and Argentine sides played whilst the Spanish, English and Mapuche teams did battle by the dirt road near the brothel.
In every match there were confrontations involving bladed weapons and construction work on the dam had to be postponed due to intense backlashes of nationalism which the tournament was triggering. At the opening game Italy won 4-1 against the Guaraní side who only had the Paraguayan flag. On the other pitches the Germans beat the French whilst the native Mapuches beat the English side and the Spanish grocers by five or six goals difference.
The first two injuries were to indigenous Guaranís who did not accept Cassidy’s decisions. The ref was forced to jab the butt end of his pistol against players to award a penalty against the Italians. In Match Two of the series on the other side of the river, Uncle Casimiro had to shoot a native Mapuche striker who had hidden the ball up his shirt and began running like mad towards the goal. The British were persistent with even-handed tactics worthy of a pitch in Cambridge when they beat the area, resulting in some Mapuche players suffering injuries.
My uncle’s written account falters and possibly mistakes some forgotten incidents. He recalls that there were three finalists: Germany, Italy and the displaced Mapuches. Above the construction of the dam, the flag of Hitler’s Third Reich flapped higher than all others throughout the tournament but, at night, someone would use a shotgun to let off blanks. And thanks to sending off their two best defenders, William Brett Cassidy allowed the Germans to beat the Argentinians. It is true that the goalie from Córdoba protected himself by throwing stones whenever the Germans were approaching the goal, but this was a tactic which all defenders tended to use when they were under threat. Before every match, fans would gather stacks of rubble behind each goal and after the scrapping was over and having carted off the injured players, any remaining stones were also collected from the pitch.
At the Semi Final stage, some irregularities happened which were out of Cassidy’s control. The Germans showed up wearing helmets to shield their heads and some were carrying pins, which were almost undetectable, to use in a ruckus. The Italians burned Fascist insignia and chanted Verdi but they went onto the pitch concealing fistfuls of red chilli powder to throw into the eyes of the opposition.
Cassidy was keen to highlight that incident and he tossed up to decide each team’s direction of play using a golden coin. But, no sooner had the coin dropped to the ground that someone pinched it and this kicked off the first commotion. The German skipper blamed an Italian cook, who spent the nights locked in one of the yard outhouses reading Lenin, of being both a thief and communist. Over there nothing was banned, but the Russians were not looked upon favourably by almost everyone and that cook was kicked off the team for insurgence and harmful reading. Before starting the match, Cassidy gave a fairly blunt pep talk on the risk of mixing football with politics. After this, he dropped out to watch the game from a sandy knoll next to the pitch.
Since Cassidy did not have a whistle and things were getting tough, he walked down the knoll with his pistol in hand ready to separate the players who were trading blows. He kept shooting into the air and although some onlookers laying low behind bushes were returningfire with shotgun blanks, my uncle’s recollection maintains that for three hours Cassidy controlled the game with nerve that was worthy of his father’s memory.
Cassidy allowed the game to last so long because the Italians were putting up a courageous fight with a lot of red chilli powder against the Germans’ attack. In the counter-attacks and faced with too many defenders, Mancini the revolutionary cut and run like a slimy eel. There were instances when Italy, playing a man down, led 2-1 and 3-2. But, at the setting of the sun, somebody handed a snuffbox to Cassidy which contained his golden dollar along with twenty other coins at least. The son of Butch Cassidy then chose to come onto the pitch and set things straight.
At a corner, Mancini went to head the ball but a German defender pricked Mancini’s neck with a pin. When the Italian began to complain, Cassidy placed his gun to the Italian’s head and threw him off the pitch without further ado. Then, when he found out that the Italians had secretly been using red chilli powder to drive away opposing strikers, he stopped the match and awarded three penalties in favour of the Germans. Casciolo, the skipper, outraged by such biased refereeing, stood between the goalie and the player who was going to take the penalty. However, Cassidy reloaded and shot him in the foot. A rather unassuming Prussian engineer who had played the whole match whilst chanting biblical verses, put on his glasses to take each penalty and scored twice (but bear in mind Cassidy had only counted nine steps from the box). The son of Butch Cassidy then immediately blew his whistle to end the game and the Italians let slip the World Cup which they had won in 1934 and again four years later.
The Germans went to party at the brothel, not even envisaging that the humble Mapuches, from way down in the Andes could beat them in the final, but that was what happened three days later on a murky forgotten Sunday. Also on that day, the telephone began working and, at 3pm, Berlin answered the first call from Patagonia. The whole district went to the pitch to see the match as well as the brand-new black telephone which the Germans brought. An army stationed on the Chilean border sent their best men to play national anthems and maintain order. However, the Mapuche did not represent any recognised country and had no written music. So, they performed a dance which summoned the help of their spiritual higher power.
My uncle, acting as linesman, recalls in his memoirs that shortly after the match began, topless women appeared who danced on the knolls and it suddenly started to rain and hail. Amid the rain and hailstones, Cassidy considered postponing the match, but the Germans had already declared victory over the phone and refused to reschedule the game. Soon the pitch became a quagmire and the players became so muddy that they were unrecognizable. Later, even though nobody had cottoned on, the goalposts vanished and, despite playing non-stop until tea time, there was nowhere to score goals. At midnight, when the rain was intensifying, Cassidy stopped the game and turned to my uncle to clarify matters. The Germans said they had seen some women carrying off the goalposts and, forthwith, the ref awarded six penalties in favour of the Germans but nobody found the goalposts to be able to take the penalties. A set of army troops went to search for the goalposts but they were never heard of again. The match had to continue in pitch dark because Berlin was demanding the score. However, there was no longer a ball and by dawn everyone was deluded, running hither and thither and chasing a dream that cut to the quick.
At sunrise, the phone rang in the middle of the desert and everyone stopped to listen in. The head engineer asked Cassidy to stop the game for a few moments but it was hopeless because the Mapuches kept running, jumping and diving to the ground as if there was a ball. The Germans, inquisitive or concerned but almost certainly dog-tired, went to pick up the receiver and heard the voice of Hitler who was beginning a speech somewhere in the remote Fatherland. Nobody else then stirred and the muffled whisper of the phone was heard all over the pitch in that first World Cup of the Communications Age.
At that time of stillness and in view of everyone, one of the goalposts suddenly appeared at the top of a hill, and the women started dancing again but without music. One of them, the fattest and most flushed from partying, attempted to find the ball which would fall down from anywhere. But with a pat on her head she fell asleep against the goalposts so that a barefoot dancer, howling with laughter, pushed her over the goal line.
William Brett Cassidy cancelled the game by firing in the air, yet, in his hazy mind my uncle sanctioned the goal as valid. It was just a pity that he forgot to record extra information and the name of that jovial Mapuche goalscorer.

Desde Tierra del Fuego hasta Texas hay más de diez mil kilómetros de distancia pero después de escapar de la cárcel, el hijo de Butch Cassidy no tenía otra cosa que hacer y decidió emprender el viaje a caballo. Durante un tiempo, mientras en Europa terminaba la guerra, estuvo escondido en los montes, escapando de la gendarmería y de los ejércitos de frontera. Por más que los golpearon en la cárcel, nunca pudo explicar qué hacía en ese lugar perdido de la frontera arbitrando un partido entre comunistas y socialistas que nunca llegó a terminar.
En la prisión de Ushuaia, cuando llegaban la primavera y el deshielo, dirigía partidos de fútbol entre presos y guardianes. A veces, para matar el aburrimiento, se organizaban campeonatos en los que participaban equipos de carceleros, gendarmes, criminales, espías, ladrones, asaltantes de bancos condenados por error, bolcheviques, anarquistas y todos los réprobos alojados en la fortaleza más austral del mundo. Hacia 1945, en la final por la Copa del Presidio, William Brett Cassidy anuló por fuera de juego un gol que los gendarmes les marcaron a los anarquistas rusos y aprovechó de la batahola para saltar un muro y escapar a la frontera de Chile.
Allí, en los bosques de la Cordillera de los Andes, se procuró un caballo, un pasaporte chileno y un revólver, que era toda lo que necesitaba, y vivió por un tiempo de la caza y de la pesca. Extrañaba sus libros, sobre todo la Ética de Spinoza, y como temía que aquél fuera un ejemplar único y se hubiera perdido para siempre, decidió reproducirlo de su propia memoria en las horas perdidas.
Quienes llegaron a conocerlo aseguran que Cassidy tenía una memoria larga pero pésima. Podía recordar por años una cara que había visto apenas un instante, pero cuando volvía a encontrarla le daba otro nombre y más de una vez tuvo que batirse a duelo con la persona ofendida. Era tan empecinado que debió matar a cuatro o cinco hombres para poder seguir llamándolos con el nombre que él les había dado en su vago recuerdo. Por eso no son confiables los textos de Spinoza y de Hegel que circulan en español (algunos fueron retraducidos con audacia al francés) y menos aun una Sagrada Familia que Cassidy había leído en italiano y reprodujo en dos gruesos cuadernos de escuela cuando llegó al Altiplano de Bolivia, a cuatro mil metros sobre el nivel del mar.
Cassidy había aprendido a leer todas las lenguas sin comprender ninguna en las estancias inglesas de la Patagonia. Como no existía ninguna librería en dos mil kilómetros a la redonda, creía que los libros eran únicos como los diamantes y que pasaban de mano en mano a la muerte de quien los tenía consigo. El primer Hegel lo encontró al lado de unos cadáveres que dejó el ejército cuando dispersó a los bolcheviques del Chubut. La Ética se la llevó de un bar después de que un gaucho encocorado matara de una puñalada a un intelectual irlandés, incidente que Jorge Luis Borges mistificó años más tarde en un cuento para La Nación de Buenos Aires. En realidad el libro era del gaucho, no del intelectual, y cuando éste se lo quiso robar sobrevino la pelea y la muerte horrenda que puso a Cassidy en posesión del primer Spinoza. A Marx lo conoció por el profesor Folcini, de Cerdeña, que le arrancó las muelas doloridas en un prostíbulo del bajo Mendoza y luego lo arrastró a dirigir el partido de Tierra del Fuego entre comunistas y socialistas.
Las transcripciones del hijo de Butch Cassidy cayeron en manos de un viajante de comercio boliviano que iba de La Paz a Cochabamba con mensajes para los mineros en huelga en los socavones de Patiño. Ocurrió durante un vibrante partido entre huelguistas del estaño y tropas del gobierno, dirigido por Cassidy, que había dejado sus cuadernos en el recado de su caballo. Sobre el final del partido se produjo un serio incidente a la entrada del área de las Fueras Armadas, que jugaban de uniforme y con sable en la mano. El marcador estaba dos a dos cuando un minero que llevaba la pelota fue decapitado sin ninguna necesidad, puesto que el árbitro ya había señalado que estaba fuera de juego y el atacante había detenido su carrera tras la pelota que era de goma y picaba sin destino entre los arbustos.
Cassidy amonestó al defensor y mandó retirar el degollado fuera del terreno, pero el soldado discutió el arbitraje y el cowboy tuvo que expulsarlo para hacerse respetar. Un oficial rubio y alto, que jugaba de mediocampista, ordenó al soldado que resistiera la orden y entonces empezaron los incidentes porque Cassidy tuvo que desenfundar el revólver frente a la amenaza de los sables. El viajante de comercio, que hacía de juez de línea, temió que le reprocharan su parcialidad a favor de los mineros y aprovechó la confusión para montar el caballo del árbitro y partir al galope. Así fue como Cassidy perdió sus transcripciones de Spinoza y Hegel.
Tiempo después, un editor de Santa Cruz de la Sierra que andaba a la caza de manuscritos innovadores compró los cuadernos por monedas y publicó esos textos de autor anónimo respetando los errores de latín y la confusiones de gramática. Al fin, en 1950, un editor de Buenos Aires creyó disipar el equívoco y lanzó doscientos ejemplares de la Ética y cuatrocientos de La Sagrada Familia firmados por los que creía sus verdaderos autores. Desde entonces se han producido varios incidentes en las facultades de Filosofía y Letras de Lima, Córdoba, Montevideo y Buenos Aires y, sin saberlo, algunos guerrillas utilizaron las versiones de Cassidy para sus discusiones internas.
Ajeno a todo eso, el cowboy argentino seguía la pista de su padre norteamericano que según los rumores había muerto en una aldea de Bolivia. Todavía George Roy Hill no había hecho la película y su padre no era tan famoso como ahora. Ciertos memoriosos le habían dicho que en verdad Butch Cassidy y el Sundance Kid habían caído baleados en San Luis y otros preferían la Patagonia, donde está enterrado el agente de la Pinkerton que los persiguió durante años. Pero, más que el lugar de la muerte, a William Brett le interesaba el de la vida y por eso iba para Texas o para Arizona, no lo sabía bien y poco le importaba. En el Altiplano, a cuatro mil metros de altura, se preguntó que demonios podía haber ido a hacer su padre allí si el mundo estaba tan lleno de bancos para robar.

Los que se llevó eran billetes con mucho ceros, pero antes de llegar a la frontera con el Brasil la moneda se había devaluado tanto que apenas pudo comprar un par de botellas de whisky y un regalo para una muchacha que le había devuelto la sonrisa en un almacén de Palo Alto.
La joven no aceptó el regalo pero Cassidy no se sorprendió porque nunca había tenido suerte con las mujeres. Al día siguiente continuó viaje hacia el norte por las selvas y los ríos del Amazonas, donde dirigió varios partidos para ganarse su comida y la del caballo. De esos partidos conservó buenos recuerdos porque en el Amazonas no se aplicaba la ley de fuera de juego y, para combatir las estrategias defensivas, los caciques de las tribus habían decidido que, cada tres corners cedidos por un equipo, el árbitro debía conceder un tiro penal en favor del otro. Esas innovaciones daban resultados amplios y generosos pero nunca fueron aceptadas más allá de esa comarca.
Hacia 1952 William Brett Cassidy pasó por México, andrajoso y envejecido. Ya no tenía ambiciones y sólo pensaba en procurarse una mujer que le contara las películas que no había podido ver. En el mercado de Cuernavaca encontró un ejemplar de la edición boliviana de su Ética y al recorrer las páginas creyó que ese ejemplar era el mismo que había perdido cuando lo llevaron preso. Lo asaltó la idea de un milagro: creyó que el libro lo había seguido en su larga marcha y se convenció de que su memoria era perfecta. Lo compró y siguió a paso rápido hacia la frontera con Texas.
Cuando vio el alambrado que separaba los dos países y, al otro lado, una estación de servicio y una llanura pelada, el corazón empezó a darle saltos. En ese lugar Butch Cassidy y el Sundance Kid habían pasado su juventud robando todos los bancos y William Brett creyó que, además, habían sido felices. Se acercó a la frontera llorando de emoción pero en el puesto de policía le pidieron el pasaporte y la visa para ingresar en los Estados Unidos de América. El cowboy ignoraba lo que era una visa pero se manifestó dispuesto a pagar por ella con los meses de cárcel que fueran necesarios.
Un funcionario de policía sacó un formulario de un cajón y le preguntó si padecía enfermedades contagiosas o hereditarias, a lo que Cassidy respondió sin bajarse del caballo que sólo lo habían aquejado dolores de muelas y tormentos de oídos. Luego le requirieron si tenía la intención de asesinar al presidente de los Estados Unidos. El hijo de Butch Cassidy preguntó quién ocupaba el cargo en ese momento y, cuando escuchó el nombre de Eisenhower, manifestó no conocerlo personalmente ni tener cuentas pendientes con él. Al fin, cuando le preguntaron si había pertenecido al Partido Comunista o a alguno de sus insidiosos colaterales, recordó al profesor Folcini, de quien no había vuelto a tener noticias, y declaró con orgullo que unos años antes había sido elegido para dirigir un partido de fútbol entre socialistas y comunistas en la lejana Tierra del Fuego.

Cassidy sacó también su revólver, se afirmó sobre la montura y mandó al caballo que saltara por encima del alambrado. La pobre bestia lo intentó, pero ya no estaba para esos trotes e hizo un triste papel. Un policía disparó al aire pero Cassidy empezó a tirar con la misma determinación que, pensaba, alguna vez lo había hecho su padre. En la confusión alcanzó a saltar al otro lado de la frontera y sintió, bajo sus pies casi descalzos, la tierra caliente del desierto de Texas.
Eso es lo último que sabemos de él. El sheriff, en su informe, dice haber disparado seis veces y sus hombres más de veinte. WilliamBrettCassidy había cumplido el destino inverso de su padre, que salió de los Estados Unidos y fue acribillado en América del Sur. Entre tanto, casi sin proponérselo, alcanzó a ser más temible y justo de todos los árbitros que hubo en los mundiales de fútbol.

Between Tierra del Fuego and Texas stretches over 6,200 miles. But, after fleeing jail, the son of Butch Cassidy had nothing else to do and chose to tackle the journey on horseback. While World War Two was coming to an end in Europe, for a period he was hidden in the mountains, taking cover from the police and border patrols. No matter how much they beat him in jail, he could never explain what he had been up to in that forgotten border area, basically, refereeing a football match between communists and socialists which never looked like ending.
In the prison in Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego, when spring and a thaw were oncoming, he would referee matches between prisoners and guards. To make time pass quicker, tournaments were occasionally arranged which would be played between jailers, police, criminals, spies, thieves, bank robbers jailed by mistake, Bolsheviks, uprisers and every bad ‘un from the world’s most southerly stronghold. By 1945 in the final of the Prison Cup, William Brett Cassidy overturned a goal which the police scored for the Russian revolutionaries. Cassidy then made the most of that rumpus by scaling a wall and then bolted for the Chilean border.
Over there in the woodlands of the Andes mountain range, he obtained a horse, a Chilean passport and a pistol, which were all the spoils he needed, and managed to survive for a while on hunting and fishing. He would yearn for his books, particularly the philosophical theories contained in Spinoza’s Ethics. So, because he shuddered that this work was one of a kind and lost for ever, he resolved to emulate it from his own recollections during lonely times.
Those who came to know him claim that Cassidy had a long yet abysmal memory. For years he would remember a face which he had seen for only a second. However, when he met them again he would call them another name and it often led to a violent struggle with the snubbed party. He was so dogged that he had to wipe out four or five men just so he could keep calling them by the incorrect name he’d given them in his fuzzy mind. That is why the philosophical texts of Baruch Spinoza and Georg Hegel which did the rounds in Spanish (and some were even translated into French) were unreliable. And to a lesser extent a work called Holy Family which Cassidy had read in Italian and replicated in two thick exercise books when he reached the high plains of Bolivia, 13,000 feet high.
Cassidy had learnt to read all languages, without understanding any of them, on the English farms of Patagonia. As there was no bookshop fora 1200 mile radius, he tended to think that books were as rare as hen’s teeth and whoever owned books would guard them with their life. The first Hegel work he came across was next to some bodies which the army had left when they scattered the Bolsheviks in the Chubut province. He took possession of Spinoza’s Ethics from a bar after a crooked Argentine cowboy bumped off an Irish academic with a stab wound. Short story writer and poet Jorge Luis Borges would baffle readers with the inclusion of this anecdote in a story he produced for Buenos Aires-based La Naciónyears later. In actual fact, the book belonged to that Argentinian cowboy, not the academic, and when the academic tried to steal it, the brawl kicked off and the subsequent grisly demise which led to Cassidy procuring the first Spinoza work. Cassidy was familiar with Karl Marx, having been taught by Professor Folcini from Sardinia. Folcini had his poor teeth pulled out in a brothel in lower Mendoza and was then dragged off to referee the match between communists and socialists in Tierra del Fuego.
The writings by the son of Butch Cassidy fell into the hands of a travelling Bolivian salesman going from La Paz to Cochabamba and carrying messages for striking miners in Simón Patiño’s sinkholes. It happened amid a spirited match between the striking tin miners and government troops, led by Cassidy, who had left his exercise books on his horse’s saddle. At the end of the game things really kicked offat the entrance to the Armed Forces section. They tended to play in uniform while carrying swords. The score was two all when a miner who was carrying the ball was pointlessly beheaded, given that the ref had already indicated that it was no longer in play and the attacker had stopped charging after the ball. Also, the ball was made of rubber and was wedged among the stinging nettles.
Cassidy reprimanded the defender and ordered the body to be carted off the pitch. However, the soldier quibbled the referee’s decision and the cowboy gave him a red card for dissent. A tall blond officer playing in midfield, ordered the soldier to refuse the command. Then, things really kicked off because Cassidy, faced with the threat of swords, was forced to draw his pistol. The travelling salesman, acting as linesman, was afraid that he would be blamed for his biased support of the miners and he took advantage of the chaos by jumping upon the ref’s mount and galloping off. And so that was how Cassidy came to lose his writings of Spinoza and Hegel.
A while later, a Bolivian editor from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, on the prowl for cutting-edge texts, bought the exercise books for next to nothing and he published these scripts by an anonymous writer, but duly corrected mistakes in Latin and grammatical slip-ups. Finally, in 1950, an editor from Buenos Aires thought about dispelling the mix-up and released 200 examples of Ethics and 400 of Holy Family signed by those who trusted that they had been written by the original authors. Since then, there have been several instances in Faculties of Philosophy and Arts in Lima, Córdoba, Montevideo and Buenos Aires and some guerrilla fighters unintentionally used Cassidy’s scripts for their in-house talks.
The Argentine cowboy, unaware of all this, was keeping track on his US father who had apparently breathed his last in a hamlet somewhere in Bolivia. But American director George Roy Hill still hadn’t made the famous movie and William Brett’s father wasn’t as legendary as he is today. Some folk with long memories had told him that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid had been shot in the San Luis Province. Conversely, others suggested it was Patagonia where the cop from Pinkerton Detective Agency, who had been relentlessly chasing them for years, is dead. But instead of death, William Brett was fascinated by where the man lived and that was why he was on his way to Texas or Arizona but he didn’t exactly know where, nor could he give a damn. At an altitude of 13,000 feet in the Andean Plateau, he wondered what the hell his father could have done on that Plateau if there were so many banks just asking to be held up.
When he swung by the village where his father had apparently been gunned down, William Brett drew his pistol and raided two banks and the post office without anybody putting up a fight. Not only was it an act of pride but also one of life or death because he required another horse and clothes to protect himself. The banknotes he took were worth a lot. However, before reaching the Brasilian border the currency value had plummeted to such an extent that he could scarcely purchase a couple of bottles of whisky and a gift for a bird who had flashed him a smile in a Palo Alto warehouse.
The girl refused the gift but this didn’t surprise Cassidy as Lady Luck had never smiled on him regarding the opposite sex. The following day he proceeded to travel northwards through the Amazon jungles and rivers where he refereed several matches to earn a bite to eat for himself and his mount. He kept positive recollections of these games because in the Amazon regions the offside rule didn’t exist.Asa way of confronting defence strategies, tribal chiefs had determined that, for every three corner kicks conceded, the ref should award a penalty to the opposition. Such a novelty produced a whole range of liberal score lines, yet it never took off beyond that region.
By 1952 William Brett Cassidy went through Mexico, but was haggard and careworn. He no longer held any aspirations and only dwelt upon landing a woman who could tell him about the films which he hadn’t been able to watch. At Cuernavaca in the marketplace he unearthed a copy of the Bolivian edition of his version of Ethics. After flicking through the pages, he reckoned that this copy was the very same that he had lost when he had been banged up. Suddenly, he was struck by the concept of a wonder: he supposed that the book had tracked him on his epic journey and this persuaded him that his memory was as sharp as steel. He then bought the book and rode like lightning to the Texan border.
When he saw the wire fence linking the two countries and, on the other side, a petrol station and a flat plain, his heart began skipping a beat. At that very place, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid had spent their youth raiding every bank and William Brett considered that they would have been happy in spite of everything. He approached the border, overcome by tears. But at the border patrol they demandedhis passport and a visa to enter the USA. The cowboy had no idea what a visa was, yet he came forward willing to pay for it by spending as much time behind bars as was necessary.
A police official took out an application form from a draw and asked Cassidy if he was suffering from any infectious or genetic conditions. Without getting off his horse, Cassidy answered that he only had toothache and tinnitus. They then demanded to know if he was planning to eliminate the US president. The son of Butch Cassidy inquired who held the top job at that time and upon hearing the name Eisenhower, he stressed that he neither knew him personally nor had any unfinished business with him. When they finally asked if he had ever been a member of the Communist Party or one of its corrupt subsidiary groups, he recalled Professor Folcini who he had not heard news about. Cassidy proudly announced that a few years earlier, Folcini had been chosen to referee a football match between Socialists and Communists in the remote Tierra del Fuego.
The police officer got to his feet, notified the sheriff and customs officers and ordered Cassidy to move away from the land of the free. The cowboy claimed to have travelled for years crossing both South and Central America to reach Texas and even recited Hegel a couple of times to highlight his intentions to those officials. But it was in vain: the sheriff ordered him to clear away from the border and drew his pistol to highlight the point. That was the final straw: So, Cassidy also drew his pistol, steadied himself in the saddle and directed his mount to vault the wire fence. The wretched animal tried its best but wasn’t up to that kind of thing any more and cut a sorry figure. An officer fired into the air, as did Cassidy with the same resolve which, he thought, his father would have done once upon a time. Amid the commotion, he managed to leap across the border and felt the hot Texas desert under his almost bare feet.
And that’s the last that was ever heard of him. In his report, the sheriff was alleged to have fired six times and his officers over twenty. William Brett Cassidy had achieved the opposite fate to his father who escaped from the USA and was gunned down in South America. Meanwhile and quite by accident, William Brett became the most formidable and fair-minded of all referees who ever featured in football World Cups.
