Translation - English 30 to 50% of the water in the Earth's oceans could be older than the Sun and come from the ice of interstellar space, according to a study published in the latest edition of Science magazine. This discovery makes it possible to imagine the presence of water, an ingredient conducive to the emergence of life, in other planetary systems of our galaxy.
Scientists have long wondered about the origin of water on Earth, because by determining the source of this water, which allowed the emergence of life on our planet, it became possible to estimate the probability that there is life on other planets, elsewhere in space outside the solar system.
There is water everywhere in our solar system. Not only on Earth, but also in ice comets, the icy moons of giant planets, and the shadowy basins of Mercury. Water has also left its mark in the minerals of meteorites, the Moon, and Mars.
However, a good proportion of this water is enriched with deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen, which tends to take the place of hydrogen when water is formed at very cold temperatures. "Ice that formed in a very cold interstellar environment, for example, contains much more deuterium than hydrogen," explains Lauren Ilsedore Cleeves, Department of Astronomy, University of Michigan.
"We do not claim that all planets have water, but that water was present in the environment during the formation of planetary systems, even if some planets, such as Mars, are dry today," the scientist explains. And this presence of water increases the probability that life has appeared elsewhere in the universe.
Portuguese to English: A compra do Ponto Frio General field: Marketing Detailed field: Economics
Translation - English The purchase of Ponto Frio in the middle of last year was Grupo Pão de Açúcar's first step toward jumping to the lead in the retail of consumer electronics, consolidated at the end of 2009 with the merger with Casas Bahia. Globex – Ponto Frio's official name – contributed to a jump in the company's sales controlled by businessman Abílio Diniz. But an unwanted side effect was a drop in the group's profit margins. This is what is shown by the first quarter financial statements, released on Monday night (10/5).
Pão de Açúcar's consolidated net income reached R$126.2 million between January and March. The figure is 33% higher than the 94.9 million obtained in the same period of 2009. Despise this progress, the net margin – which measures net income as a percentage of net revenue – has regressed. A year earlier, the margin was 2%. This quarter, it closed at 1.8%. The drop is even more meaningful when you consider what Pão de Açúcar would gain without the contribution of Ponto Frio. On a comparable basis, that is, discounting Ponto Frio, Pão de Açúcar would profit R$129.9 million - with a net margin of 2.3%. In relation to the consolidated result, this is a 0.5 percentage point drop in the margin.
In the report accompanying the statements, Pão de Açúcar attributed the drop in margins to "the increase in the share of consumer electronics, which produce lower margins than food products." The gross margin is also lower when incorporating Ponto Frio's numbers: 24%, compared to 24.6% without the new subsidiary. Both are also lower than the 25.3% recorded in the first quarter of last year.
Sales momentum
However, Ponto Frio's entry into the group helped other balance sheet items. Without the new network, net revenue stood at R$5.716 billion - an increase of 23% from the beginning of 2009. Globex's net revenue, however, is up 7.76 billion, or 36% higher.
