Mi chiamo Raffaello Cei e quell ache racconterò è la mia storia. Non si tratta di una storia eccezionale, anzi essa è commune a molti giovani della mia generazione I quali, esattamente come me, hanno vissuto la Guerra conoscendone esaltazione e orrore. Sono ricordi lontani, forse sbiaditi dal tempo, come levecchie foto. Ma la racconterò ugualmente perché è mio desiderio che I giovani di alter generazioni conoscano meglio, anche attraverso storie come la mia, l’importanza e la necessità della pace.
Sono nato a Lucca, nel 1920, il 16 di ottobre. Avevo solo due anni quando Mussolini prese il potere, posso affermare perciò di aver vissuto interamente la prima parte della mia vita, fino alla maturità, sotto il fascismo.
Voglio subito dire che proprio per quel motive mi fu facile accettare come naturali idee, consuetudini e simboli che ci venivano propinati proprio perché non ne avevo conosciuti di diversi e mai mi sores il dubbio che essi potessero essere sbagliati o men che mai condurre alla rovina di un paese.

My name is Raffaello Cei, and what I will tell here is my story. It is not an exceptional story, but rather a common one for many youths of my generation who experienced the war just like I did, getting to know its exaltations and its horrors. They are distant memories, perhaps a little faded by time, just like old photographs. But I will tell it anyway, because I wish youths of other generations to know, thanks to stories such as mine, the importance and the need for peace.
I was born in Lucca in 1920, on the 16th of October. I was only two years old when Mussolini ascended to power, so I can claim to have lived the first part of my life, up until adulthood, entirely under Fascism.
I want to say at the outset that it was for this reason that it was easy for me to accept some ideas, symbols and habits that were foisted onto us as natural. Precisely because I hadn’t ever known any different ones, I never questioned whether they were wrong, and even less so whether they could lead to the collapse of a whole country.

Source text - English The activities of the Società Dante Alighieri outside Italy are conducted by independent associations abroad which are constituted, or can be formed, in most important cities of the world, where interest in studying the Italian language and culture exists.
Following the understanding between the Central Council of the Società Dante Alighieri and an advisory committee, it was agreed that an overseas association should be re-established in Cape Town, where one had existed before the 1939 – 1945 war, and which would have close ties with Società Dante Alighieri, carrying out the same aims and objectives. Consequently, the Società Dante Alighieri Città del Capo was founded in Cape Town in 1959.
Translation - Italian Le attività della Società Dante Alighieri fuori dall’Italia sono condotte da associazioni indipendenti all’estero che sono state costituite o possono essere formate nella maggior parte delle più importanti città del mondo, laddove vi sia interesse per lo studio della lingua e della cultura italiana.
A seguito dell’accordo tra il Consiglio Centrale della Società Dante Alighieri e un comitato consultivo, si è convenuto che una delle associazioni all’estero dovesse essere ristabilita a Città del Capo, dove ne era già esistita una prima della guerra del 1939-1945, che questa avrebbe avuto stretti legami con la Società Dante Alighieri, e che ne avrebbe avuto le stesse finalità ed obiettivi. Di conseguenza, nel 1959 fu fondata a Città del Capo la Società Dante Alighieri Città del Capo.

In the world through which I travel, I am endlessly creating myself-Frantz Fanon
In a continuous search for a better me, I explore different interests and occupations, but my love for words runs through my life as an anchor and constant. I was a traveler, free-spirit and lover of questions, answers, dance and food. Now a mother, there is a whole new world unfolding for me, which I am just beginning to learn about, and a lot less time.
I still love stories, and translations and interpreting have opened up my world to many stories being lived and told. Transforming words from one language into another is a creative act that gives me infinite satisfaction.
I have translated contracts, budgets, theses, books, legal documents, CVs and medical documents, and interpreted in a variety of fields. Each of these experiences tells a story, if not in what is being said, then about the people involved.
There is nothing better than a good story, and so much to learn from those that tell it.
