Source text - English Thank you. A reporter asked Mother Theresa, one time, "Don't you think that what you do for the poor is a drop in a bucket?" I can't imagine anybody asking Mother Theresa that. Mother Therese said without hesitating, "No, what I do is a drop in the ocean, but if I didn't do it, it would be one less drop." I can't imagine anybody saying that to Mother Theresa. We've heard a lot of stories about Mother Theresa over the years. I have my own stories. I had the great fortune of knowing her, being with her a number of times. The first time I met her was in Calcutta. I went downtown with her in a very densely populated area of Calcutta. People were living on top of one another. And, there was a man lying in the street right before me, right where this first row is. He looked half dead to me. She went and got some men to pick him up, took him back to our hospice. Like she did with almost everybody, she whisked off him. She hugged him, whispered in his ear and she really brought him back to life. She came back to me later in the afternoon. She grabbed my hand and she said to me, "Congressman, you know, not everybody can come to Calcutta like you. What I want you to do is to go back home and tell everybody to do the thing that is in front of you." What she was kind of saying is: if everybody did the thing that is in front of them, everybody took care of their neighbor, we probably wouldn't need half the stuff that governments do in the world, because people would be taking care of the problem in front of them. So, what's in front of us? What's in front of us as far as hunger today in this world, even in our own country? Well, in this world today as far as hunger is concerned, there will be 21,000 people that will die. They will die of hunger and hunger related deaths. And that's a death every four seconds, in this world, somebody dies from hunger. That's unbelievable! There's at least a billion people in this world today, that are starving. Even in our own country, in America, there's 48 million people that are hungry. It's not the type of hunger, in America, that we have, let's say, in Sudan, Ethiopia or North Korea. People are not dropping dead here, in America, but they are hungry and malnourished. These 48 million people are women and children, senior citizens, that are going to bed two or three days out of every month, without food. They are people that are not making it. They are maybe making eight, nine, ten dollars an hour. By the time they get done paying the rent, their daycare bill, their utility bill, they run out of money. And they have to go to food banks and soup kitchens and wherever they can find food. Those are the 48 million people. We have a problem. I got involved in this issue about 35 years ago. I was in Congress at the time and after a couple of years of being in Congress, I became chairman of the Select Committee on Hunger. It was my job to travel around to different countries, to different developing nations, poor nations that were having problems, and report back to Congress what I was seeing, in hopes that Congress would do something about it, in hopes that we could make a difference, and we did, we made a lot of difference. The first place I went to was Ethiopia, and Ethiopia was having a great famine in those days. This was 1984. And the famine turned into a civil war. I was visiting a place up-country from the capital, about two hours by light plane. And again I was visiting a place that was handled and run by Mother Theresa's group, Sisters of Charity. This clinic was on a high plateau in a very rural area. The clinic was no bigger than maybe the stage. There were two nuns there, that was it. But people were running for their lives because there was a civil war and famine. They thought, at this clinic there might be food or medicines and blankets because it was high. Even though it was on the equator, it was still high and very cold at night. When I got there, there were thousands of people at this little clinic, lined up. And I saw before I could get into the door, people were lying on the ground, moaning. One lady handed me her baby... The baby was dead. (Sighing) I think she thought I was a doctor, that maybe by touching her baby I could bring this baby back to life. As I walked among these people, I saw 25 children die within 15 minutes. I had to put my sunglasses on. My eyes were just fogged over, cloudy with tears. I didn't want these people to see that I could barely see. I was taken back by it, I was stunned. I have never forgotten that image. I think about it all the time. I came back from that trip, as I was flying back thinking, we do a lot of things in Congress that don't amount to much. We waste a lot of time. I thought this is what I'm going to do: I'm going to be involved in this issue. I am going to legislate. I'm going to travel the world. I'm going to get involved in my district, to start programs and pass laws. And we did. The New York Times called my committee "the conscience of the Congress". We passed a lot of legislation on food security, and pick up of food, and microcredit for women, and school feeding, and immunization of children and lots of good stuff. Just about the time when I thought, "This is the greatest committee in the world, we are really doing some major work", Congress eliminated my committee. Can you believe it? They eliminated my committee because they said that we have high deficits, and therefore, we need to cut back on several of our programs and we're going to tell the American people that we're going to get the money back to the American people, and we'll look good in the eyes of the American people. They kept the money. They lied. They eliminated my committee. I didn't know what to do. Going home that night, I was pounding on my steering wheel. I was so mad. I didn't know what I was going to do. I got home. I said to my wife, "You know, Jane, I think I'm going to quit congress." I said, "These men and women don't care about the issues I care about. The poor don't have much of a voice up here. The poor don't have campaign funds. They are not the greatest voters in the world. They don't get to see the congressmen and senators. Nobody is listening. They eliminated the only committee that deals with this issue of hunger and poverty. What do you think?" She said, "Did you ever think about fasting?" I'm thinking, my wife, what's going on here? (Laughter) Fasting! She said I just read this amazing chapter in the old testament on fasting, which is a great chapter, at Isaiah 58. You can read on the screen what it says. So, we read it, we prayed, and we talked. And, within the next couple of days I went on this fast in the Congress. The Congress, for the most part, thought I was silly, crazy. Why would a congressman ever do this? Nobody in the Congress has ever done this ever before. But apparently, the people in the country didn't think it was silly, because 10,000 high schools fasted with me. 200 universities fasted. I fasted for 22 days. I didn't drink any fruit juice or anything like that, I just drank water. I announced to the congress that I'm going to fast. I'm not going to eat until something good happens. I'm sick and tired of you people not caring about the poor and the hungry, and I'm going to fast. I don't know how long it's going to be: ten, fifteen? I didn't know how long I was going to fast - I fasted for 22 days - but I'm going to fast until something good happens. And all these good things started to happen. The press began to write about it in very good terms. The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, the networks and the editorials began to write in very glowing terms. And the Congress didn't know what to think because they all had deserted me thinking, "This guy is silly. He's crazy." But the rest of the country didn't think so. And I'm losing weight like you can't believe. (Laughter) So many good things happened. But the thing that really got me to quit the fast was... the World Bank, which is the largest development bank in the world. They called me. It's a multi-billion dollar bank. They called me and they said, "Tony, we've been reading about you, We've been reading about this fast in all the papers and we're thrilled and excited about it. We want you to come and make a speech. We're inviting some heads of state. Jimmy Carter is coming, and the secretary general of the UN. We're inviting a lot of people. And if you come and make a good speech, maybe we'll put some resources towards you. We want you to speak about your fast. So, I came. I don't know if I made a good speech, but, they committed a hundred million dollars to the fast. (Applause) I didn't look so silly anymore, thank God. It was a great success. And I ended the fast. I did the thing that was in front of me and it worked. It even surprised me. One fast! Today, in Dayton, Ohio, my community, your community, we have a problem here. We lost 40,000 manufacturing jobs here, in the last few years, and we got hit really hard with this recession. And we have a hunger problem. A year ago, I was reading in the Daily News that we are the fourth hungriest city in the country. The fourth hungriest city in the country. But, we're going to change that, because we've got good people here. We're going to collaborate. We're going to do the thing that is in front of us. We're going to bring this city back to where it used to be. We're going to really, really, feed people because we know what to do. We know how to do this. Look at the person on your right. Look at the person on your left. What if each one of us, just in this theater here, did one drop? We've got maybe 1,200 seats here. What if we fed one family tonight? What if if we took care of our neighbor tonight? What if we fed one family for a week, maybe six months? What if we did that just in this theater, right here? That's 1,200 seats, 1,200 drops: that's a river, a river of drops! A river of drops pretty soon, it's an ocean. Pretty soon, not only would we change this community, we'd change this world. Então eu pensei: "É isso que vou fazer, vou me engajar nesta questão. Vou legislar. Vou viajar o mundo. Eu vou me engajar com o meu distrito para começar programas e aprovar leis". E nós conseguimos. O New York Times chamou o meu comitê de "A Consciência do Congresso". Nós conseguimos passar muitas leis sobre segurança alimentar e sobre coleta alimentar, microcréditos para mulheres, merenda escolar, vacinação de crianças, e várias outras coisas boas. Source text - English Ten years ago, I was a sophomore at the Cleveland Institute of Music. And one morning, I walked into my music theory class, no doubt very excited to learn all about proper voice leading and harmony, but our teacher started class by standing next to the piano, and I could see she had tears in her eyes, she said: "I know that sometimes we, as classical musicians, have a tendency to get wrapped up in our own world, but if any of you aren't aware of the tragedy that's happening right now in New Orleans, you need to turn on your television." I tried to act cool, but I was one of the ones she was talking about. I had no idea how bad Hurricane Katrina had gotten because I lived in a bubble. Now, the bubble is one of the first things they teach you. I started taking violin lessons when I was five years old, and my teacher was like, "OK, here's your violin, here's your bow, and here's your bubble." And you learn that outside the bubble is where your friends get to play after school, and inside the bubble is where you practice instead. Later in life, outside the bubble is where your boyfriend dumps you; and inside the bubble is where you practice anyway. You can see why the bubble is important. In fact, it's absolutely necessary. No one has ever gotten really good at anything without the bubble. But as my music teacher pointed out, it's not always a good thing. For me, the bubble paid off when I won a job in the Richmond Symphony, six years ago. But shortly after I moved here, I developed the desire to share classical music with a broader, younger audience. So I founded Classical Revolution RVA, an organization that gets away from the formality that cloaks so much of the classical music experience today. So we perform in bars, restaurants, cafés, galleries, basically places that young people are already going to hear live music. There's no dress code, you can come and go as you please, you don't have to subscribe to an entire season. And we rely, almost entirely, on social media to get the word out. These are all, in my opinion, steps in the right direction because this approach seems to fit these generations knack for not planning ahead at all. But perhaps the greatest innovation of Classical Revolution has been one that was a complete accident and totally low-tech. Balliceaux, the venue where we've performed almost every month for the last 3 years, doesn't have a backstage area. You walk in, there's a stage, some seating and a bar. What that does is that it makes the musician sit in the audience until it's their turn to perform. And when they're done, they have to go back into the audience. So when the lights come up and the concert is over, the audience and the performers are in the same space, physically and otherwise, because they've all just experienced the same thing. And that creates this really natural, low-key environment that's just ripe for connections between audience and musicians. And those connections have made our community stronger. So I got to thinking: what if we, as classical musicians, cared about our audience as much as we want them to care about classical music? What if we cared about them as individuals, each with their own interesting stories and backgrounds, likes and dislikes? What kind of culture would that foster? Because, after all, the reason art is so important in our lives and in our society is that it expands our consciousness beyond language, beyond our own particular worldview, beyond our time and place. So if you want to talk about progress, it's not just playing Mozart in a bar. The biggest step forward we can take is going to be to take that experience of expanded consciousness, past the stage, outside the concert hall, beyond the art museum, outside of our bubble, and to care, genuinely, maybe not about every last person on earth, but at least, about every person who comes across our path. Mas talvez a maior inovação da Classical Revolution seja uma que foi um completo acidente e absolutamente nada tecnológica. Balliceaux, o lugar onde nos apresentamos quase todos os meses nos últimos três anos, não tem uma área de bastidores. Você entra lá e tem um palco, uns assentos e um bar. E isso faz com que os músicos se sentem com a plateia até que chegue a hora de se apresentarem. E quando terminam, eles voltam para a plateia. Então, quando as luzes se acendem e o concerto acaba, a plateia e os músicos estão no mesmo espaço, fisicamente ou não, porque acabaram de viver o mesmo momento. E isso cria um ambiente verdadeiramente quieto e natural que está preparado para que haja conexões entre plateia e músicos. E essas conexões têm fortalecido a nossa comunidade. Então, comecei a pensar: e se nós, como músicos clássicos, nos importássemos com nossa plateia tanto quanto nós queremos que ela se importe com a música clássica? E se nos importássemos mais com eles como indivíduos, cada um com suas vivências e histórias interessantes, gostos e aversões, que tipo de cultura nós fomentaríamos? O maior passo adiante que podemos dar será o de levar essa experiência de ter expandido a sua consciência para além do palco, para fora da casa de shows, para além do museu de arte, para fora da nossa bolha, e para se importar, de verdade, talvez não por cada pessoa da Terra mas, pelo menos, por cada pessoa que cruza o nosso caminho. Recently bitten by the liberty and freedom bugs, I've decided that my life's goal is to help make a free world and to become freer myself.

With my passion for languages and my skills with them I hope to help spreading the teachings of the Asutrian School of Economics, the works of the libertarian authors, and anything that could push the individual forward, so translating any material related to these or similar topics to the portuguese language would be ideal.

Since a very young kid I have dealt with computers for the largest part of my day, so I can handle them very well. When in college I discovered programming and that I was very good at it, so when I graduated I started a programming school for children. I ran the school for one and a half years before I chose to sell it, leave and start a career as a developer. So here I am now.
