Source text - English No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man’s and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment.
Translation - Portuguese Ninguém acreditaria que, nos últimos anos do século XIX, este mundo estava sendo observado atenta e profundamente por seres de inteligência muito maior que a do homem e, ainda assim, tão mortais quanto ele; enquanto os homens se ocupavam com suas várias preocupações, eles estavam sendo analisados e estudados, talvez com o mesmo esmero que alguém com um microscópio possa analisar as criaturas transientes que nadam e se multiplicam em uma gota d’água. Com complacência infinita, os homens iam de um lado a outro deste globo, cuidando dos seus afazeres, serenos na sua certeza de serem donos da matéria. É possível que os protozoários sob o microscópio façam o mesmo. Ninguém pensava que os mundos mais antigos do espaço poderiam ser fontes de perigo à humanidade, ou, se pensou neles, foi apenas para considerar a ideia que de a existência de vida neles seria impossível ou improvável. É curioso lembrar de alguns dos hábitos mentais destes dias que já se foram. No máximo, os homens da Terra imaginavam que poderia haver outros homens em Marte, talvez inferiores e prontos para receber um empreendimento missionário. Ainda assim, através do abismo do espaço, mentes que são para as nossas o mesmo que as nossas o são para as bestas que sucumbem, intelectos vastos e frios e insensíveis, olharam para esta Terra com olhos cheios de inveja e lenta, mas inexoravelmente, começaram a planejar contra nós. E, no início do século XX, chegou a grande desilusão.
