Source text - English Its positioned on the Nile just south of an area of
rapids called the fifth Cataract ensure the strategic
position at the hub of major trade routes to the African interior.
The fifth Cataract is rocky and you can’t sail through there.
The rocks are so sharp; they will cut the bottom of your boat.
You have to actually leave the water, go by land
and then rejoin the Nile. And you rejoin the Nile in the area of Dangeil.
Throughout its history, the Nubian kingdom lured traders
from afar who coveted goods like
Ivory, animal skins and of course, gold.
People of many different cultures and languages
Greeks, Egyptians and Romans all traded with
Nubia. Many would have passed through Dangeil
and may have left a bilingual inscription.
But for now the only avenue to the Nubians past lies
underground. Here, you have to dig, you have to go dirty,
you have to bring things out of the sand
to study them, to draw them and to make your
analysis out of that.
The North African weather doesn’t always cooperate.
Three weeks into the dig a swirling cloud on the horizon
means a tough job is about to get a lot tougher.
The following morning, skies are clear and with
the calm after the storm, comes their first clue to the
origins of the ancient city.

A cartouche
Only royalty was allowed the privilege
of encircling their name with a symbolic oval shape
called a cartouche. The form of a rope tied together at the end
was thought to protect the imperial name from harm.
And that’s what we have here. we have the bottom of the oval.
And this is one of the letters. Of course a king’s name has many letters,
so we just have one tiny clue here.
If you find the name of the king in the sanctuary that means
this is the man who built the temple.
This is a very very important piece.
Now we need to try and find the rest of the name
and hopefully, it will be here somewhere
because this piece obviously came off of something.
Though Julie and Salah don’t know who exactly built
the Amun temple at Dangeil they suspect it dates back
some two thousand years to Meroitic period.
This was Nubia’s golden age, when the great kings ruled
from Meroe and were buried in the royal cemetery
in tombs with a familiar form. Influenced by their
proximity to Egypt the Nubians admired the massive tombs
at Giza and began burying their royalty in pyramids of their own.
They adapted the shape favoring a much steeper sided pyramid.
A joining offering chapels were richly carved with scenes representing
the comfortable after life of the king, attended by his many servants.
Not only kings are buried in pyramids at Meroe. After the third
century BC, a series of strong queens occupied the throne and may have been
co-regents. One of the most powerful ruled near the time of Christ just
before the temple of Dangeil was probably constructed.
Amanishakheto is a really powerful Nubian queen. She is carrying
bows and arrows. These are traditionally the equipment of a man
and she has got prisoners tied up. There is a good possibility that she
actually fought off the Romans.
In 23 BC, Roman soldiers attacked the Nubian kingdom.
According to their accounts, the Nubian resistance was
led by a valiant woman blind in one eye
who scholars believe may be Amanishakheto.
The queen successfully stopped the romans from
overtaking her kingdom and even brokered a favorable peace
treaty. Though faint, traces of Amanishakheto’s imposing
figure can still be seen on the walls of her offering chapel.
She is a larger woman so it shows how powerful she is.
It’s also a part of the Meroitic impression of beauty.
She is well fed she is wearing a lot of bracelets on her arms
rings on her fingers. She would have been covered in gold.
She was a very lucky lady to have a lot of this jewelry.
Amanishakheto’s royal cache first came to light in 1834 .
When an Italian explorer Giuseppe Ferlini, traveled to the Sudan
eager, as he claimed, to make some useful contribution to history.
In fact, he was really searching for gold. Ferlini hoped to make
fortune selling antiquities back in Europe.
His greed led him to the pyramid fields of Meroe.
According to his diary, Ferlini directed his work to dismantle
Amanishakheto’s tomb at nearly a hundred feet height, one of the best preserved
in the cemetery. While his men labored under the punishing rays of the desert
sun, Ferlini took it easy in the shade. The excitement began when
a faithful servant summoned him from the top of the pyramid.
I got up and raced over. My heart filled with the hopes of some delightful adventure.
At the summit, Ferlini reported that his men had discovered a chamber hidden
beneath the stones. From within, emerged a bronze bowl filled with objects
wrapped with clothes of linen. Ferlini had hit the jackpot.
As it became evening, I brought the discovered objects to my tent.
And after all the servants have given over to sleep, I pulled out
the precious objects and studied them with my soul filled with joy. I admired the gold.
And on seeing the quantity of it, I realized it had to exceed greatly all which I knew
was free through the museums of Europe.
Ferlini had discovered a dazzling hoard of jewels.
Today much of this cash in housed in Munich Egyptian museum.
Gold bracelets covered with decorative bands of fused glass,
ornamental pendants bearing images of the gods.
And dozens of heavy gold rings, some incised with the figure of Amun.
This is one of the greatest treasures ever found in Nubia. It gives a very good
idea of what the kings and the queens would have been wearing at the time.
Though Ferlini’s raid did bring incredible cache to light, a price was paid
for the discovery. The explorer’s ruthless quest for gold destroyed Amanishakheto’s
pyramid
In the outer courtyard of the Amun temple at Dangeil, another story of destruction
may be unfolding. These ruins too may be the product of something more than just the
ravages of time.
This temple seems to have been abandoned for some reason.
We are not quite sure why.
From beneath the ground, comes evidence of a catastrophic moment
in Dangeil’s history.
It’s part of a roof beam. It’s a long piece of palm wood, but it’s been incredibly badly
burned. You can see this is charcoal and you can see actually little bits of the palm
beam breaking up as its disintegrating. We are actually finding
the real part of the roof beam that fell in after a big big fire in this forecourt.
It must have been a terrible terrible fire because um the burning is so extensive.
You could see traces of this fire on the columns, on the floor and we actually have
a piece of it, preserved. Finding an extensive layer of burning does give us
a good clue as to why people left the area.
Maybe it was a big war maybe the temple accidently caught fire.
However it started, the fire must have been fierce enough to cause the evacuation of the
temple and maybe the entire city.
But what may have been a disaster for the Meroets has proven to be a blessing for
Julie and Salah.
Everything underneath the layer of the fire that was on the floor surface
has been completely sealed. This creates a time
capsule. We have a specific moment in time preserved for us that we can see.
If Julie and Salah’s theory is correct, that moment in time may correspond with the
final days of the Nubian empire. Scholars know little about this period,
but excavations at Dangeil could help explain how and why
the powerful kingdom came to an end. To learn how the empire first began,
we must look to monuments farther North.
Just beyond the fourth cataract of the Nile lies the most sacred place in all of Nubian
Jebel Barkla, the pure mountain.

مما يعنى أن العمل سوف يزداد صعوبة

وما ظهر بعد العاصفة هو الأدلة الأولى |على وجود أصول المدينة العتيقة

اسم الملك يحتوى على أحرف عدة| وما بحوزتنا الاّن دليل بسيط
إذا وجدنا اسم الملك فى المعبد فهذا |يعنى أن هذا الرجل من قام ببناءه
إنها قطعة فى غاية الأهمية
الاّن يجب أن نجد باقى الإسم
نأمل في أن يكون قريب، | فهذه القطعة هى جزء من شىء ما
(جوليا) و (صلاح) لا يعلمان بالضبط| من قام ببناء معبد (آمون) فى (دانجيل)
و يرجحان أنه ربما يعود إلى حوالى| ألفى عاماً إلى فترة المرويتس
كان هذا هو العصر الذهبى للنوبة
عندما حكم ملوك (مروى) العظِام و دفنوا| في مقبرة ذات مقابر معهودة الشكل
متأثرين بقربهم من (مصر) و إعجابهم| بالمقابر الضخمة فى (الجيزة)
و بدأوا بدفن العائلة الملكية |فى الأهرامات الخاصة بهم
وقاموا بجعل إطار الهرم أكثر انحداراً
المعابد حينها إمتلاءت بمنحوتات مذهلة |توضح النعيم الذى سوف يلقاه الملك
فى الأخرة بوجود الخدم الكثر معه
لم تقتصر عملية الدفن فى الأهرامات| على ملوك (مروى) فقط
فى القرن الثالث قبل الميلاد
مجموعة من الملكات العظام حملن| العرش وشاركن فى الحكم
أعظمهن حكمت قرابة عصر السيد المسيح| قبل تشييد معبد (دانجيل)
(أماني شاكيتو) تعد نموذجا |لملكات النوبة ذوات البأس
فظهرت و هى تحمل القوس و السهم| تلك المعدات كانت خاصة بالرجال فقط
و كانت تكبل من يقع تحت اسرها |ويرجح أنها حاربت الرومان
فى القرن 23 قبل الميلاد |هاجم بعض الجنود الرومان المملكة النوبية
ووفقا لمصادرهم، كانت المقاومة |النوبية بقيادة إمراة شجاعة
مصابة بالعمى فى إحدى عينيها
يعتقد العلماء أنها (أماني شاكيتو)
نجحت الملكة فى منع الرومان |من الإستيلاء على مملكتها
وتوسطت لعقد معاهدة سلام معهم
لا تزال اّثار شخصية (أماني شاكيتو) المهيبة
من الممكن رؤيتها على جدران معبدها
كانت إمراة ضخمة مما يظهر| مدى قوتها الجسمانية
كما أن ذلك يعكس إنطباع| المرويتس عن الجمال
كانت ممتلئة القوام و ترتدى الكثير| من الأساور في ذراعيها
و الخواتم فى أصابعها كما لو| كانت مغطاه بالذهب
كانت سيدة محظوظة جداً لتحظى| بذلك القدر من الحلى
ظهر مخبأ (أماني شاكيتو) الملكى| لأول مرة فى عام 1834
عندما سافر المستكشف الإيطالى| (جوسيب فيرلينى) إلى (السودان)
على حد قوله أوضح أنه كان متلهفًا لتقديم| بعض الإسهامات المفيدة فى التاريخ
لكنه فى الواقع كان يبحث عن الذهب
(فيريلنى) كان يأمل فى تكوين ثروة |من خلال بيع الآثار فى (أوروبا)
قاده الجشع لمنطقة أهرامات (مروى)
وفقا لمذكراته، ركز (فيرلينى) عمله| على تفكيك مقبرة (أماني شاكيتو)
التى كانت على ارتفاع ما يقرب من | مائة قدم، وهى تعد أكثر مقبرة محفوظة
بينما كان رجاله يعملون |تحت أشعة الشمس الحارقة،
استهل (فيرلينى) عمله فى الظل
بدأت الإثارة عندما استدعاه خادمه| المخلص من قمة الهرم
نهضتُ وأسرعت، امتلئ قلبى بالنشوة |أملاً فى وجود مغامرة مشوقة
و على القمة، ذكر (فيرلينى) أن رجاله| اكتشفوا غرفة مخبأة تحت الحجارة
فى الداخل ظهر وعاء برونزى مليْ بأشياء| ملفوفة بملابس مصنوعة من الكتان
(فيرلينى) ربح كنزه المنشود
بحلول المساء، أحضرت| المُكتشفات إلى خيمتى
بعد أن غط جميع الخدم فى النوم
أحضرت أثمن الاشياء و بدأت بدراستها| و أنا فى غاية السعادة
لقد أعجبت بمنظر الذهب
و بعد رؤية كميات كثيرة منه أمام عينى
أدركت أن هذا تخطى الأعداد| المتواجدة بمتاحف (أوروبا)
اكتشف (فيرلينى) كنز براق من المجوهرات
حاليًا معظم هذه الحلي موجودة |فى المتحف المصرى بـ(ميونخ)
أسوار من الذهب مُرصعة بقطع| زخرفية من الزجاج المنصهر
الحلى المتدلية التى تحمل صور الاّلهة
وعشرات من الخواتم الذهبية السميكة | البعض منقوش عليها جسد (اّمون)
هذا أحد أعظم الكنوز التى وجدت فى (النوبة)
فهو يعطى فكرة شاملة عما كان يرتديه| الملوك والملكات فى ذلك الوقت
على الرغم من نجاح غارة (فيرلينى)| فى كشف هذا المخبأ المذهل
دُفع ثمن هذا الاكتشاف غالياً
همجية المستكشف و سعيه وراء الذهب |أدى إلى تدمير هرم (أماني شاكيتو)
في الفناء الخارجي لمعبد (آمون) في (دانجيل)،|قصة أخرى من الدمار قد تُكتشف
ذلك الحطام قد يكون نتاج شئ أكثر| من مجرد أطلال خلفها الزمن
يبدو أن هذا المعبد قد تم هجره لعدة أسباب| لسنا متأكدين تماماً لماذا
من تحت الأرض يأتى الدليل على لحظة| فاجعة فى تاريخ (دانجيل)
هذا جزء من دعامة سقف، إنها قطعة| طويلة من خشب النخيل
لكنها أحرقت بشكل مروع
يمكنك أن ترى هذا الفحم وبقايا بسيطة | من حُطام دعامة السقف الخشبية التى تفتّت
فى الواقع لقد وجدنا الجزء |المادى من دعامة السقف
التى سقطت فى أعقاب الحريق |المدمر الذى ألم بتلك الباحة
لابد أن الحريق كان هائلاً لأن |نطاق الأحتراق ممتد
يمكنك أن ترى اّثار هذا الحريق |على الأعمدة وعلى الأرض
و بحوزتنا قطعة محفوظة من تلك الاّثار
إيجاد رقعة واسعة مُحترقة بهذا الشكل| يعطينا دليل قوى عن سبب
هجر الناس لتلك المنطقة| ربما بسبب حرب كبيرة
أو أن المعبد قد احترق بطريقة غير متعمدة
كيفما بدأت ،لابد أن النيران كانت |مُهْلِكَة كافياً لتتسبب فى إجلاء
المعبد أو ربما المدينة بأكملها
ولكن ما قد يكون كارثة بالنسبة للمرويتس
قد عاد بفائدة عظيمة| على (جوليا) و (صلاح)
كل شئ تحت رقعة الحريق والذى كان |على سطح الارض تم حفظه بإحكام
وهذا صنع ما يشبه كبسولة زمنية
لدينا لحظة معينة من الوقت حُفظت |من أجلنا لنتمكن من رؤيتها
إذا كانت نظرية (جولي) و(صلاح) صحيحة
تلك اللحظة قد تتوافق مع الأيام| الأخيرة للإمبراطورية النوبية
العلماء يعرفون القليل عن هذه الفترة
لكن الحفريات فى (دانجيل) يمكنها |أن تساعد فى تفسير
كيف ولماذا انتهت تلك المملكة القوية
لمعرفة كيف شُيدت الإمبراطوية ، لابد أن |نفحص الاّثار الموجودة أقصى الشمال
فعلى الجانب الاّخر من الجندل الرابع| من النيل يكمن المكان الأكثر قدسية
فى (النوبة) بأكملها
و هو جبل (باركل)، الجبل النقى
