English to Spanish: Fact Sheet on the RSPO Substantive weaknesses and institutional deficiencies of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) General field: Other Detailed field: Agriculture
Source text - English • Child labour and extensive overtime
In order to achieve the targets set by the palm oil companies, workers are often forced to work overtime or to rely on the help of family members (often even children). Overtime is rarely compensated, even in cases where people regularly work 10 to 12 hours a day. The work is physically demanding, especially for children; the risk of injury is omnipresent and the working environment is chemically polluted.
• Forced labour
Day labourers are particularly vulnerable to exploitation, since they are easily put under pressure by their employers. Their job is at risk as soon as they fail to achieve the target set by the company. Migrant workers on Malaysian plantations are additionally forced to hand in their passports to their employer. This places them in a state of dependence and makes it difficult for them to leave the plantation.
Translation - Spanish • Trabajo infantil y extenuantes horas extras

I was born in Costa Rica, thus my mother tongue is Spanish. I have a master's degree from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, where the language of instruction and thesis writing was English. In all jobs, as far as I can remember, being bilingual has played a strong role, as handling both languages has been key for my positions and performance. I have had experience teaching science in English in a private school, but I developed most of my translation experience in the environmental NGO sector. For over a decade I have translated, edited and co-written documents in both languages for national, regional and international organizations.
