Source text - English Are idioms arbitrary?
Linguists used to believe that idioms were completely arbitrary: that is, you could not guess their meaning from the words they consist of. Consequently, teachers used to tell their students that the only way to master idioms was to learn them by heart. Fortunately, we now know that many idioms can be explained after all, and so they can be learned in systematic ways. Research tells us that when idioms are presented as non-arbitrary features of language, students find them much easier to understand and remember. In the following sections we will demonstrate the non-arbitrary nature of idioms.

En el pasado, los lingüistas pensaban que los modismos eran completamente arbitrarios, lo que significa que no podías deducir su significado a partir de las palabras que lo componen. Source text - English When a word is set up as part of a pattern, we don't need to devote any fresh processing energy to it the second time it occurs, or the third time. It's not 'new news' any more. And that allows us more energy to concentrate on the following verbs – doubts... wonders... questions – that are actually the heart of this sentence. It's these verbs that give a focus to the emotionally charged nouns that accompany them: America, power, democracy, and the echoes of earlier famous speeches – founders (Abraham Lincoln) and dream (Martin Luther King).
Translation - Spanish Cuando una palabra forma parte de un patrón, no necesitamos dedicar nuevamente energía a procesarla la segunda o la tercera vez que aparece. Ya no son «nuevas nuevas», lo que nos permite concentrar más energía en los verbos siguientes (dudar, preguntarse, cuestionar) que son realmente el núcleo de la frase. Son estos los que resaltan los sustantivos cargados de emociones que los acompañan (Estados Unidos de América, poder, democracia) y que evocan los ecos de discursos previos famosos: nuestros fundadores del de Abraham Lincoln y sueño del de Martin Luther King.
