How many translators you've met in your life have been artists themselves?
How many translators truly understand and respect the blood, sweat, and tears you have invested in your creative works?
And most importantly, how many translators know the details about how to create an artistic work from scratch?
I'm sure you have rarely seen them, and one of the rarest linguists is me.
I have long been a music producer, a singer-songwriter, and a lyricist, and I used to think that my own story, works, and ideas were all that I had to care about. Unexpectedly, however, I was given a chance to translate someone else's story that mirrored his life. Well, I'm not going to lie. I first thought it was even unfair for me to have to convey someone else's message, not mine.
But after I got down to the job, I found myself, quite surprisingly, enjoying the process. In fact, I felt like I had discovered a new form of art, something similar to method acting in a way. To deliver the very message hidden in the words in both the most accurate and the most natural way, I needed to put myself into the writer's shoes. 'What if I were trying to convey this meaning but I can only speak Korean?' I asked myself. It took empathy instead of self-absorption, which had been the driving force for my creation before, to translate and localise something.
It was about four years ago, and since then, I have personally lived a healthier life, working as a full-time freelance translator. I love how I can connect with my fellow (or previous fellow) artists, whether they call themselves like that or not, through translation and give a bigger audience the opportunities to bask in the knowledge, wisdom, or fantasy of those works from across the sea.
I promise I'm ready to infuse new life into whatever written by someone on the same mission as me—to provide people with beautiful experiences.
