French to English: Treatment for Aveeno television advertisement General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
Source text - French Note Aveeno
Bruno Sauvard
Translation - English Aveeno Treatment
Bruno Sauvard
Aveeno has arrived on the market for cosmetic restorative and anti-aging treatments. It is a revolutionary breakthrough and the film should reflect this effective new treatment, both in regard to the artistic direction, lighting, focal distances or set and in terms of treatment of the product demonstration and the technological side of the research.
Based on the articulation of the board, the problem, the solution, and demonstrating the benefits, finally we will push the artistic direction for the product. Certainly a new and effective product, it is firmly anchored in life, far from the cold and impersonal laboratories associated with the field of skin care and cosmetics in general.
We will introduce the poetry of enthusiasm and natural care.
It is with a true aesthetic bias that we will make Aveeno, a different kind of product, new and attractive to the viewer.
The Film
The film is divided into three stages. Each of these stages is important because it allows the viewer to discover this totally new product, with a structure that will crescendo while creating a particular intimacy with the consumer.
At the outset I find the metaphor of the balloon very appropriate, as it is poetic, efficient, and understood by all but also and especially because it allows, in terms of image planes, to obtain very aesthetic shots, playing with an aerial view smoothly and without clashes. This will introduce a rhythm from the beginning, a gentle narrative that leads the viewer to see the product as an ally and not as a response to an irreversible ‘catastrophe’, i.e. the workings of time.
We follow this balloon, and the voice-over introduces the assumption of irreparability that concerns every woman entering maturity, but softly, without being aggressive. There, from the beginning, we can sketch out a bias in the artistic direction, playing with pretty flares and focal lengths that suggest more than they emphasize. One must feel a general sense of true sweetness; we note the effects of time without ever being alarmist. These effects, we discover through the balloon, are all at once a metaphor for the aging of the skin yet also the link that connects us to our heroine. The crumpling effects on the balloon will be subtle and never crude; this is the work of post-production coupled with a genuine concern for the accuracy of the shots, which allow us to suggest without ever shocking. It loses its shape slightly, reacting to the obstacles it encounters, but without any coarseness or brutality. We must have a feeling of fluidity for, indeed, our balloon – and with it, our skin – suffers the ravages of time but of course, the possibility is implied of countering these effects. Coming upon the woman and softly introducing the notion of a solution, we approach her, the balloon accompanying us. She is serene. One must feel the softness of this transition, all the confidence our heroine has in facing the dilemma of the passage of time, because ‘nature does wonders’ and she knows that well. In exploring her face, we review the ‘critical points’ – the parts of the body that, unfortunately, bear witness to age: the oval of her face, the beginning of her neck, the corners of her eyelids – but it will never appear as a description of catastrophe, we will rather put forth a mini inventory of the areas that reflect advancing age without ever falling into sharp images. The woman is beautiful and radiant but nevertheless time simply has a hold on her, as it does on everyone.
In the second stage of the film, we focus on the product. Changing the scene, we enter into a more technical phase with a more ‘professional’ narration, the indispensable demonstration that validates the technicalities of the product: its development, application, composition, and finally, its effectiveness.
Finally, we return to the benefits of the Aveeno cream, we return to life and see the result: that ‘nature does wonders’ and it shows.
Staging & Production
For this film, the key words are natural, femininity, gentleness, care, and effectiveness.
We follow the path of the balloon through an urban setting; we are in the city and this allows us to highlight the modern side of the product while also showing that being in the city does not interfere with the naturalness of our shots.
We must feel a genuine poetry in the film. The balloon wanders, it plays with the light and the architecture, but it also allows for interaction with people; it naturally guides us through the scenery.
I think that each bounce of the balloon should render a fresh and modern image, far from the cold and overly technical images of cosmetics and skin care. We are in real life, not in the studio, the rays of sunshine playing on the pearly surface of the balloon, long lenses suggesting the scene without ever being too didactic; this balloon becomes a real entity in itself. It creates the link, in terms of the narrative, between the problem and the woman who searches for the solution.
Next we go into a more pointed demonstration, introducing the concept of the product’s technology: derived from nature but developed in a highly professional way in demanding, modern laboratories.
These shots will be more targeted, more centered on the product: its origin, its composition, its application and the benefits it provides. However, we always retain a partiality toward the natural aesthetic, in the studio as well as in the pack shots; we must feel the real and authentic side of the Aveeno cream, the lighting will never appear cold. We will keep slightly desaturated hues, as in the first part of the film, to maintain the aesthetic and narrative thread. The shots showing the skin and the wrinkles will be bright on our actress’ skin and not on a more damaged skin, as is the case on the board; thus the viewers can project themselves more easily. Skin that is very damaged could divert the focus of our product and create a sense of fear. We observe the natural state without being defeatist.
This allows us to slip gracefully into the third part of the film, the return of the woman who is beautiful, glowing, natural; she enjoys nature’s benefits, she is radiant and real.
The camera is always close, favoring slow movements (shot by hand) rather than robotic, mechanical movements.
Each frame will be extremely carefully shot, with a precise photographic approach regardless of depth of field, which will allow us to focus the viewer on the essentials.
The Scene (see visuals)…
The light will be natural, playing with a set that is vivid, sober, and very real. We will employ very graphical, composed shots, architectural lines structuring the journey of our balloon; lights filtering through a park gate, mirrored in a window, playing with reflections, introducing a sort of visual game that will personalize our film.
Being in the city also allows us to work with a range of soft colors; grays, blues, but also soft greens, when, turning a corner, we cross into a square.
The Woman…
Apart from the quality of beauty, the young woman, ‘Eugena Silva’, must also have a real presence.
In the images that I have seen of her, she seems full of personality and has a radiant smile.
She is a woman who is beautiful, natural, and active in real life. It is with her ability to be natural even in the context of an advertisement that she will make the difference.
The camera is always on the lookout for little details that will bring us closer to this woman: a figure covered in shadow, a hand flipping back a lock of hair, a beam of light running through the foliage of a tree, the oval of a face subtly drawn by the rays of the sun.
A slightly lower light, at the end of the day, will work for the shades of colors, the blues and pinks smooth and without any coldness.
Styling
Our heroine is an active woman, a real city-dweller. We therefore emphasize a ‘trendy’ appearance; without being too casual, she still remains very spontaneous in her style of dress. A pair of boots over jeans or a dress that highlights her silhouette, a large ‘carry-all’ handbag to emphasize the dynamic side of our heroine. One must feel that we are facing a very vital woman, well within her element, natural yet extremely stylish and alluring.
The Product
All the shots that refer to the product will be heavily worked, to illustrate the remarks of the voice-over, of course, but also to underline the benefits of the product.
We will use a glossed light for the textures, the close-ups of skin, soft lights that accentuate the natural aspects and beneficial side of the cream. We should not feel cuts between the first part of the film and the scenes of product demonstration; everything should remain fluid and spontaneous.
Thus we slip into the last part of the film, giving the viewer the feeling of a coherent vision that reinforces the naturalness of the product without artifice.
Because ‘nature works wonders’, and this should be reflected in our sequences.

A Stunning Visual Alchemy
Our film explores the relationship between two worlds:
– Nature; the forest, with its hundred-year-old trees and their majestic roots covered with lichen and moss, allows us to capture rare, delicate images naturally and poetically.
– The innovative John Frieda brand, both on point with its technology and deeply anchored in contemporary style, personalizes and embodies the free, vibrant hair of today’s young woman.
– This duality is, in my opinion, where the film’s strength lies. By fully employing the elements present, we will be able to produce a truly top-of-the-line film, as surprising as it is innovative.
The twofold concept is all the more interesting as it is also the reflection of another duality: that of the product and its capacity to influence a young woman, but always subtly and delicately; never in an ostentatious or brutal way.
The product is the perfect recipe for an awakening of colors and radiance in healthy hair, revealed thanks to a crucial ingredient: superb hair care that starts at the roots. Unlike other shampoos, Root Awakening has health benefits for the hair, and makes it stronger.
As I conceive it, our film must have the same magical effect!
It’s a clear metaphor: this seemingly-enchanted forest, bathed in rays of light that pierce through the treetops, filled with the trunks of magnificent trees and full of vitality, represents the ultimate finesse, vitality, and sensuality of a young woman who feels at ease in the universe, letting her hair react to the surrounding environment: the light penetrating the leaves, soft breezes, wisps of fog floating through the branches.
The objective is to make a tactile, modern film, filled with the sensuality of nature and with an extremely sharp photographic approach.
The Heroine
The young actress must be, obviously, very beautiful. Urban yet natural, she is attractive and desirable; facing life head-on and always having fun and directing the action, participating in the development of the images and the closeness of her gorgeous hair to the organic elements which surround her.
Her hair (thick, wavy, or curly) will be blonde or chestnut, her skin fair.
She must – and this is very important – be a good actress, one who possesses a wide expressive palette and is not content merely to pose or stiffly gesture. This will require a generous versatility on her part.
Finally, she must be both pleasing and enviable, as much for her flawless looks and her full, healthy hair as for her seductive personality.
Setting
The places where our heroine finds herself must be in tune with the metaphor and the film’s aim for excellence.
Ideally for this woman, it must at the same time release a sense of great purity, naturalness and strength.
At the time of our conference call, I had considered that the point of view of the camera could be that of another person.
After some reflection, it seems more sensible to me that this young woman moves through the forest in a simpler, more natural way, seeking the perfect symbiosis between her and the magical but real and natural elements that surround her.
The force that could fell the trunk of a hundred-year-old tree, the sound of a bird taking flight through the branches, the noisy chattering of the silent clearing, a pearl of dew rolling down a leaf, the smooth moss; pulling back in awe in front of the stately tree’s entangled roots, marveling at its splendor…
We will create a visual and tactile dance of sorts between the young woman, her hair, and her surroundings.
The interior of the house (of its bathroom) is in tune with what she seeks.
It is urban but composed of noble materials (wood, glass) in which there is a noticeable presence of natural elements brought back from previous strolls through nature.
The sequence of the shower and the application of the product falls under the same visual register as the rest of the film: innovative perspectives, surprising gestures, intentions that are clear, and an atmosphere of sensuality.
The pack shot cannot be on the edge of the window of the bathroom since the discovery of the city has to be inlayed (in the case of a one-day shooting); it will be integrated in the most natural and graphic way possible with the décor, upon which we will elaborate.
A subtle blend of references, the scenery mixes the influences more to benefit from perspective and line of sight rather than to be demonstrative.
This idea cannot be manifested except in a vast space, to which the break points and the angles used will bring the necessary breath of life necessary to the film. The numerous scenic and decorative elements will underline its dreamlike richness.
A crystalline lens at the beginning of the film will capture soft colors thanks to the rainbow effect generated by the drops of rain.
A magnificent crystal glow illuminates the room, making the colors again reveal the rainbow in the crystal. Tight lines and a modern ambience where the delicate sheer curtains are omnipresent; “Rococo” furniture (Hotel Delano by Starck, Miami Beach).
It’s a magical image, with the sense of smell accentuating the translucent glare of the water droplets.
The picture
Hair is the most important element of the film.
Everything is, in terms of light, calibration, and production, at its service. If our protagonist’s acting remains natural and spontaneous, a very precise plan for the hair will be carried out. Its brilliance and movement is magnified: its strands are smooth and pure, its texture is luminously silky and its volume generous.
The camera is mostly very close, an intimate friend and accomplice, and will play with the depths of field to avoid a “surgical” view and to place priority on sensuality.
The light plays a very important part. The visual association between the hair and the living organic matter in the trees, in addition to an uncompromised use of flares and of high-placed lights allows us to create a rare work of advertisement.
It will thus be necessary to play with camera speeds, flares, and all the visual accidents that this unexpected association will generate, by emphasizing the emerging sensuality and poetry.
The camera is fluid, but never disorderly. Each frame will be polished, modern, and readable.
The editing must be clear in the narration while being sufficiently nervous. No “clipped” artificial rhythm but a constant fluidity.
Sophisticated and modern, the visual approach is extremely photographic; very stimulating yet soothing.
