I am a Full-time Freelance Translator working with the language pair: English and Chinese. My translation credentials come from two aspects: education and work experience.
BA in English (educated in China)
In the period of undergraduate study:
Worked hard on a variety of fundamental English courses, which laid a good language foundation for translation;
Passed the TEM-4 and TEM-8 (compulsory English language Tests for English Majors Band 4 and Band 8 in China) with high grades;
Took translation courses by which my interest in translation was sparked off and from which I got a basic understanding of translation;
Participated in the 17th Foreign Language Translation Contest of Hubei Province, China and won the 3rd Prize of Written Translation for English Majors;
Awarded the title of “Merit Student of University”, the title of “Merit Student of School of Foreign Studies” and the National Encouragement Scholarship of 5,000 RMB.
MA in Translation Studies (educated in the UK)
In the period of postgraduate study:
Equipped with more translation theories that provide techniques/strategies for translation practice;
Acquired a greater ability to reflect on the problems/difficulties encountered in translation and turn to theories/experience for solutions;
Recognised the necessity of more factors to be considered into translation including translation brief, text type, register, style, tone, readership, purpose, function, context, culture, etc.;
Developed a deeper and broader awareness of linguistic conceptual issues bearing upon translation practice;
Further strengthened my competences in languages, intercultural communication and translation technologies.
I entered the translation profession in July 2012 immediately after graduation from university. Until now, I have translated over 2.5 million words.
07/2012 - 09/2017Full-time In-house Translator/Reviser/Proofreader at translation companies. During the five years:
Engaged in various translation projects covering different fields and gained rich translating/revising/MT post-editing/proofreading experience;
Developed excellent skills in Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT), research and time management and high sensitivity to details, which guaranteed top quality and on-time delivery even under a tight deadline and the pressure of multitasking;
Familiar with every step in the translation industry workflow, especially the procedures for translation quality assurance, which led to the successful completion of translation projects;
Passed CATTI 2 (China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters Level 2, which has a low average pass rate of about 11%) and became a CATTI 2 Certified Translator in China.
