Translation - English GLOWING GLASSBLOWING
A mountainous region stretching between France and Germany, the Northern Vosges abounds with sights. Located here is Metz with its prolific history, Baden-Baden with its springs, and Strasbourg, which interlaces the lineaments of both countries in its architecture. Secluded deep in the woods on the French side of the border is the small village of Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche. Seated about 100 km to the east of Metz within a one-hour drive from the city, the spot is hardly to be found on a stranger’s itinerary. This is where the Cristallerie royale de Saint-Louis crystal factory is based.
Over the course of the 200-year-long history of the brand, the manufacturer has rounded up a good many samples of crystal glassware, roughly numbering 7,000 items. For quite a while, the collection gathered dust in the storerooms. Everything changed three years ago as a new gas furnace was installed at the factory. The older, coal furnace was rendered redundant and vacated the room it had occupied. It was decided to open a museum on the premises, and the Lipsky+Rollet architectural bureau was contracted for the project.
The brick-and-sand grotto that once housed the furnace was left almost unchanged. The architects fitted a wooden framework inside it so it touches neither the walls nor the roof. The roof, by the way, had been designed by the famous Gustav Eiffel. The museum’s wooden showcases are no tribute to the modish eco-friendly lifestyle. Crystal is a truly magical material: cast out of plain sand in monstrous-looking furnaces and then ferociously mangled with rustic tools, it ultimately emerges into clinking brilliance, elegance, and fragility. The contrast between crystal and wood is what Florence Lipsky and Pascal Rollet decided to play around with. As a result, some 2,000 fragile exhibits took their places on wooden shelf stands. Around 5,000 more pieces, however, continue to gather dust in the repository, but the museum’s management vowed that exhibits will be alternated constantly so over time visitors will be able to see all that has won the Saint-Louis brand its fame.
