Source text - English Cronus turned to Zeus and said that he was astonished to see that only martial Emperors were summoned to the competition, and not a single philosopher. "For my part, he added, "I like philosophers just as well. So tell Marcus to come in too." Accordingly Marcus was summoned. [...] His aspect was unutterably beautiful from the very fact that he was careless of his appearance and unadorned by art; for he wore a very long beard, his dress was plain and sober, and from lack of nourishment his body was very shining and transparent, like light most pure and stainless.
[...] The other gods were of the same mind; only Silenus cried "By Dionysus I shall not let this sophist off so easily. Why then did you eat bread and drink wine and not ambrosia and nectar like us?"
"Nay," he replied "it was not in the fashion of my meat and drink that I thought to imitate the gods. But I nourished my body because I believed, though perhaps falsely, that even your bodies require to be nourished by the fumes of sacrifice. Not that I supposed I ought to imitate you in that respect, but rather your minds."
For the moment Silenus was at a loss as though he had been hit by a good boxer, then he said: "There is perhaps something in what you say; but now tell me what did you think was really meant by 'imitating the gods.'"
"Having the fewest possible needs, and doing good to the greatest possible number."
"Do you mean to say", he asked, "that you had no needs at all?"
"I", said Marcus, "had none, but my wretched body had a few perhaps."
Translation - Greek Ο Κρόνος στράφηκε στον Δία και του είπε πως εκπλήσσεται που βλέπει μόνο αυτοκράτορες-πολέμαρχους στον διαγωνισμό και κανένα φιλόσοφο, και πρόσθεσε: “Εγώ τουλάχιστον εκτιμώ εξίσου τους φιλόσοφους· οπότε πείτε και στον Μάρκο Αυρήλιο να έρθει.”
Έτσι λοιπόν φώναξαν τον Μάρκο. [...] Η όψη του ήταν απερίγραπτα όμορφη ακριβώς επειδή ήταν έτσι ατημέλητη και αστόλιστη: γενειαφόρος και λιτά ντυμένος, ενώ από τις στερήσεις το σώμα του έμοιαζε διάφανο, άσπιλο σαν φως.
[...] Το ίδιο σκέφτηκαν και οι υπόλοιποι θεοί· μόνο ο Σειληνός έκρωξε: “Μα τον Διόνυσο, δεν πρόκειται να αφήσω τον σοφιστή να γλιτώσει έτσι απλά! Τότε γιατί έτρωγες ψωμί και έπινες κρασί και όχι αμβροσία και νέκταρ όπως εμείς;”
“Γιατί δεν σκέφτηκα να μιμηθώ τους θεούς στην τροφή και στο ποτό. Φρόντισα βέβαια το σώμα μου γιατί νόμισα, ίσως λανθασμένα, ότι ακόμα και τα αθάνατα κορμιά χρειάζονται τις αναθυμιάσεις των θυσιών. Παρ’ όλα αυτά δεν σκέφτηκα να σας μιμηθώ σ’ αυτά, αλλά στη διάνοια.”
Για μια στιγμή ο Σειληνός έχασε τη λαλιά του, αλλά συνέχισε: “Μπορεί και να υπάρχει κάποιο νόημα σε όσα λες. Αλλά τώρα πες μου, τι πραγματικά σημαίνει για σένα να μιμείσαι τους θεούς.”
“Να ‘χεις όσο το δυνατόν λιγότερες ανάγκες, και να κάνεις όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερο καλό.”
“Θες να πεις ότι δεν είχες καθόλου ανάγκες;” τον ρώτησε.
“Εγώ δεν είχα καμία” απάντησε ο Μάρκος, “το κακόμοιρο το σώμα μου ίσως να ‘χε μερικές””.
