Japanese to English: The legend of Damine Kannon Detailed field: Tourism & Travel
Translation - English In 1644, Nikko Temple was burned to the ground. The villagers decided to rebuild the temple and felled wood from Mt. Dando for the project, which was completed in 1654. Among their reconstruction materials, they logged sacred trees owned by the Shogun. News of the event found its way to the ears of a local magistrate, and it was decided an inspector would be dispatched from Akasaka to inspect the forests.
The village people, faced with the prospect of being punished for the serious crime of illegal logging, went to plead with Kannon: “If you’ll save Damine, we’ll always hold a performance in your honor during the festival, even if only three families remain in the village!” On the day of the inspection, which fell in June, there was a great blizzard, and the inspector, unable to enter the forest, turned back without punishing a single villager.
Japanese to English: What is a mortgage? Detailed field: Finance (general)
Translation - English In a mortgage, you receive a loan from a lending institution. Every month, you pay off a part of the principal plus interest, and when the entire amount is paid off, for the first time, the property belongs completely to you. From the perspective of the person who took out the mortgage, in exchange for paying out a fixed sum (cash outflow) each month, their share in ownership of the property (putting aside the legal meaning of ownership) gradually increases. If you look at it from the perspective of the institution that grants the mortgage, in exchange for a fixed sum each month (cash inflow), their share in ownership of the property gradually decreases.
