Source text - Thai QR codes can be used in Google's mobile Android operating system via both their own Google Goggles application or 3rd party barcode scanners like ZXing or Kaywa. The browser supports URI redirection, which allows QR codes to send metadata to existing applications on the device. Nokia's Symbian operating system features a barcode scanner which can read QR codes, while mbarcode is a QR code reader for the Maemo operating system. In the Apple iOS, a QR code reader is not natively included, but more than fifty paid and free apps are available with both scanning capabilities and hard-linking to URI available. With BlackBerry devices, the App World application can natively scan QR codes and load any recognized Web URLs on the device's Web browser. In gratitude of our 6th year anniversary, I wanted to pause and take a
moment to tell the story of our very beginnings in the hopes that the
volunteers, adopters, community members, staff members, and everyone
who is part of Care for Dogs’ work and mission are honored by the
progress we’ve made and the successes we’ve enjoyed as a team!
I moved to Thailand a few years after college in 2005. I was drawn to
Thailand’s Buddhism, temples, and as a counselor I’d wanted to work
with the Burmese refugees who’d found refuge in Northern Thailand. I’d
planned on travelling all over Thailand before settling down but I was
instantaneously awed by Chiang Mai and set down my roots here after
only 2 weeks on the road! I found a volunteer position helping Burmese
women learn English and History, but I couldn’t overlook the plight of
street dogs all around. I did some research online and found that
there was a local dog rescue group working towards spaying and
neutering street dogs who were asking for volunteers to help with
their work. I sent an email and Karin Hawelka, one of their
volunteers, answered back inviting me to join their next meeting. Over
the next few months, my work with street dogs increased as my
knowledge of the street dog situation and my ability to help improved.
I found a kindred spirit in Karin; I remember seeing a bald dog on a
Big C parking lot and calling her asking: “What can I do”? She walked
me through quite a few “firsts”; my first pregnant dog, my first puppy
rescue, my first mange case, my first TvT case, etc. Having worked
with street dogs in Thailand for 2 years already, Karin had lots of
great advice!
Karin and I actively went around Chiang Mai’s temples and parking lots
and found dogs wandering around and took them to the vet to be
spayed/neutered and kept them at our homes until they recovered. Karin
and I got even closer when, after living in a teak house on the Chiang
Mai-Lamphun road, I was asked to move out because my neighbors were
frustrated about the strays I was bringing home, and Karin suggested I
move into the rental house next door to hers. I moved into the tiny
house on a huge plot of land next to Karin’s home and kept on with our
rescue work. Within the next few months, both Karin’s house and my
house were packed with recently spayed/neutered adult dogs and puppies
awaiting adoption.
Over coffee, we started talking about future plans for starting a
shelter. We knew that spaying and neutering was the most important
part of rescue work, but we also realized that the dogs needed a place
to recover and heal from the surgery before being released back to
their original location. We also knew that having a centralized
location where we could bring puppies to and advertize adoptions for,
would be a wonderful step up for street doggies in Chiang Mai!
In June of 2006, we built a wall around the land and house I’d been
renting and opened our doors as Care for Dogs. In 2009, we were able
to successfully register as a Foundation in Thailand.
Over the last 6 years, we’ve added separate enclosures for different
types of medical cases, we’ve built an office, a veterinary treatment
and surgery room, we’ve added storage space and a bathing station,
we’ve built doggy houses and canine lounge areas, we’ve built bamboo
huts, we’ve provided stronger roofing to protect the dogs from the
rain, we’ve added an isolation ward for really sick dogs, and we’ve
just recently added a new location called New Hope Recovery Home to
help treat dogs who’ve fallen ill with parvo and distemper.
In the beginning, we hired one dog caretaker to care for the 10-20
dogs we had rescued. As our rescue efforts developed, our work
increased, and we now are blessed with a committed team of 10 staff
members and approximately 20 regular volunteers (to date, Karin and I
have always been volunteers ourselves) and a flux of travelling
volunteers who actively look after our 180 dogs and dedicate
themselves to regular sterilization programs, medical rescue cases,
dog-welfare education, and adoptions. We now have two regular vets at
our shelter; one full time and one part time. Our work has touched
thousands of dogs… and it just keeps getting better!

Hello, my name is Pichamon :) I hold my Linguistics degree (B.A.) in Thai language from Chiangmai University. English is a foreign language with Tourism Study as my minority. I worked full-time for some translation service companies in Thailand as a proofreader/translator (DTP section). Now I am a full-time freelancer.
