The overall purpose of the talk is to discuss the problems and possible solutions to handling PDF files. These are becoming increasingly common on the Internet and elsewhere, but present translators with particular problems because we need to convert the PDF file into editable text -- whereas PDF files are specifically intended not to be edited. That is why I called my original talk "Getting Blood From a Stone".
Below is a summary of the topics covered in this talk:
Origins of PDF / the Adobe family / why PDF files are difficult / single-column versus multi-column files / PDF and the Internet / PDF versus XML / PDF security and encryption / how to handle a PDF file / many solutions, none perfect / software solutions - converters, OCR, Acrobat Professional, and the last resort - cutting and pasting from Acrobat Reader / case studies / Q & A, FAQ /
Motto: Be Prepared before you are offered a PDF file to translate!
After a lifetime in other careers (journalism, IT), I became a translator 5 years ago, also doing a postgraduate translation course on the side. I now translate from Swedish or German to English.
Because of my background in IT, I have a particular interest in electronic tools for translation, particularly speech recognition. I will be talking about five different types of tool, their pros and cons, in order to give you some ideas for what you might find useful.
Peter volunteers to moderate the ProZ.com Swedish>English community.
The translators' world would be much easier without PDFs...

Hoping for useful information! I hate PDFs, you never know what happens when you try to convert them. And once you managed to do so and translate - where is all that text going? What will happen to my file, when I turn it into a PDF... Hours of despair...
Will your presentation still be available after the session today?
