『ブリキの太鼓』の一節です。たぶん、a bull in a china shopを元にした表現だと思うのですが、ニュアンスを訳すとしたら、どうしたらよいでしょう。陶器の数が明らかに多いとわかっていれば、「瀬戸物屋が開けるくらいの陶器」とかする手もあると思うのですが。お知恵を拝借できたらと思います。

KathyT Jul 3, 2009: ちなみに、male 'cows' and 'elephants' are both "bulls" (as are alligators/crocodiles, bison, camels, dolphins, giraffes, hippos, etc.). However, as Kanazawa-san says, the image of a bull here (in English, anyway), is definitely that of a 闘牛.
Yasutomo Kanazawa Jul 3, 2009: Notesへの解答そうですね、オスカルが陶器を見るとムズムズするのかもしれません。ただ、腑に落ちないのは、旧訳で、なぜ「ゾウに恋している陶器」と訳されているか、です。象という単語はドイツ語でしか出てこないし、英語ではbullになっています。それとも私のように英独両方見比べて訳したのかもしれません。英語のbull in a...は闘牛に使う牛を連想させますよね。元々牛っておとなしい動物だと思うのですが。ドイツ語の象を使ってもニュアンスは伝わってきますよね。

上記のリンクから文章を拝見しました。a bull in a china shopとはことごとにぶちこわしをする乱暴者という意味です。瀬戸物屋を開くほど、陶器があるわけではなく、文章全体からすると、オスカルがリナの部屋の中の様子を語っている場面です。色々と物が置いてあり、陶器を見た時に、床に叩きつけて割ってほしいと誘いかけているように思えた、と言っているのだと思います。

因みに原文（ドイツ語）を拝見しましたが、ドイツ語では、同じ表現でも牛ではなく、ゾウを使っています。ドイツ語原文を直訳すると、陶器がゾウに要求している、となっています。
