Reich Kristallnacht Explanation: The term Kristallnacht is recognizable to most educated readers. I have rarely seen the term translated. The same is true for "Reich" Hitler's regime is frequently referred to by English-language writers as "the 3rd Reich." Some terms, like Gemuetlichkeit or Weltschmerz don't really require a translation. |

Kristallnacht ('The Night of Broken Glass'), Reichskristallnacht Explanation: Kristallnacht ('The Night of Broken Glass'); Reichskristallnacht The short version is the common one in English (sometimes accompanied by the above ‘explanation’ of the term: Not everyone -- especially not younger English-speaking people -- is focused on German terms associated with the Holocaust, though they should certainly be very aware of the subject. The longer term is quite uncommon in English. For one thing, it’s hard to pronounce -- even incorrectly. Upon returning from school, I showed my mother a package of four perfect, beautifully painted tin soldiers I had long craved and now found among the broken glass outside a vandalized shop. She made me go all the way back and return them, putting them down exactly where I found them. I found this difficult to understand then – why they were just lying in the trash! During the years that followed, I came to understand. HTH Tom See above. |
