A wallet beats a pretty face Explanation: Informal expression in Mexico, meaning that in a man, money is more important than being handsome or good-looging. Cristina |

money trumps good looks Explanation: .....to follow your lead about playing cards..... The above is simply a short and understandable way to get the idea across, very much like yours. I can't think of a particular expression for this in English. Maybe some of the others will be able to. suerte! |

You can't be too rich or too thin Explanation: OK, this is for women but this is the sort of thing you're looking for - an idioism. All I can tell you Zoe Zoe is that I've been dwelling on this and asked my husband (who's a walking dictionary) and I don't think there IS a "pat" saying in English. HOWEVER - "Money beats a pretty face." is not only a solid saying but stays in the pokar venacular. This is what I'd use. (By the way, pretty is not just for girls - we call the "cuties" pretty boys.) So this works perfectly - it infers a woman would go for Bill Gates rather than a poor Julio Iglesias given the choice. Anyway, I'd use "Money beats a pretty face." Hope it helps! Suerte! |

Diamonds Explanation: I agree with happyfarm; just to say that 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend' would probably be the nearest in English - any other attributes are second to this is the implication, and the 'diamonds' doesn't have to be interpreted literally... |
