Schadet Putzen der männlichen Gesundheit?
Männer, lasst das Putzen sein! Denn es bringt euch früher ins Grab. Das folgern Forscher aus Gesundheitsdaten von 1,6 Millionen Belgiern. Eine gewagte These, meinen die Statistikexperten Björn und Sören Christensen.
Für putzfaule Männer kam die Studie aus Belgien wie gerufen. Nervige Diskussionen im Haushalt, wer denn nun bitteschön das Bad auf Hochglanz bringen soll, schienen sich damit ein für allemal erledigt zu haben. Denn sofern man den Ergebnissen der Untersuchung glauben darf, weisen Männer, die häufig putzen, ein höheres Sterberisiko auf!
Bevor das männliche Geschlecht sich aber zurücklehnt und den Frauen den Haushaltsputz überlässt, lohnt es, die Ergebnisse der Studie einmal im Detail anzugucken. Dabei lässt sich wenig über putzende Männer, dafür aber viel über die voreilige Interpretation von Statistiken lernen.
Die Brüsseler Forscher Laura Van den Borre und Patrick Deboosere haben in einer aktuellen Studie untersucht, ob Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter des belgischen Reinigungsgewerbes im Vergleich zu Büroangestellten ein erhöhtes Sterberisiko aufweisen.
Basis dafür waren Daten von knapp 1,6 Millionen Belgiern - erhoben zwischen 1991 und 2011. Die Forscher haben analysiert, wie sich die berufliche Tätigkeit auf das Sterberisiko auswirkt.
Auch Teilzeit und Art der Tätigkeit berücksichtigt
Und tatsächlich lässt sich dabei beobachten, dass Mitarbeiter aus dem Reinigungsgewerbe ein bis zu 45 Prozent höheres Sterberisiko aufwiesen als ihre männlichen Kollegen mit Bürojobs. Für Frauen fiel dieser Unterschied deutlich geringer aus. Für beide Geschlechter wurde dabei sogar unterschieden, welcher Art die Reinigungstätigkeit war.
Nun lernt jeder Statistiker, dass solche Ergebnisse mit Vorsicht zu interpretieren sind. Schließlich kann sich der Lebenswandel eines durchschnittlichen Beschäftigten im Reinigungsgewerbe ja von dem eines Büroangestellten unterscheiden.
Im gewissen Rahmen haben die Studienautoren dem auch Rechnung getragen. Es wurden das Alter, das Geschlecht, der Umfang der Tätigkeit (Vollzeit oder Teilzeit) und der Ausbildungsstand der Probanden berücksichtigt. Eingang in die Studie fand auch der Fakt, ob eine Person Raucher ist oder in der Vergangenheit war - allerdings nur indirekt, weil die Informationen darüber aus anderen Datenquellen stammten.
Gesundheitsrisiko Mann?
Das Ergebnis der Studie, wonach Männer des Reinigungsgewerbes ein höheres Sterberisiko haben, war eine Steilvorlage für die Medien. "Warum Männer beim Putzen ein hohes Sterberisiko haben" oder "Wer viel putzt, stirbt früher" - so lauteten die Überschriften zur Studie.
Die Autorin Laura Van den Borre vermutet, dass unsachgemäßer Umgang von Männern mit Putzmitteln Ursache für die höhere Sterbewahrscheinlichkeit sein könnte. Dann, so wird die Autorin zitiert, sei in Privathaushalten die Gefahr noch größer, weil dort Reinigungsmittel oft noch bedenkenloser eingesetzt würden.
Dass bedenkenloser Umgang mit Reinigungsmitteln der Gesundheit nicht eben dienlich ist, mag man unbesehen unterschreiben. Ob die belgische Studie aber tatsächlich ergeben hat, dass Männer gedankenloser mit Reinigungsmitteln umgehen und deshalb ein höheres Sterberisiko aufweisen, ist jedoch fraglich.
Dazu braucht es keine tiefergehenden Statistikkenntnisse. Erst einmal reicht es, im Kopf durchzugehen, welche Faktoren sich sonst noch auf die Lebenserwartung auswirken könnten. Sofort fällt einem ein: Ernährung, Sport, Stress. Da könnte es signifikante Unterschiede zwischen Putzmännern und -frauen geben. All dies wurde gar nicht berücksichtigt, weil dazu einfach keine Daten vorlagen.
Vielleicht strengt die berufliche Reinigungstätigkeit Männer auch derart an, dass für gesundheitsfördernden Sport weniger Muße als bei einer Bürotätigkeit bleibt. Oder dass der Job für sie im Vergleich zu ihren Kolleginnen schlicht stressiger ist.
Wichtige Daten nicht vorhanden
Auch könnte es sein, dass männliche Mitarbeiter des Reinigungsgewerbes weniger auf gesunde Ernährung achten, zum Beispiel, weil die geringere Entlohnung weniger Möglichkeiten hierzu lässt. Weibliche Reinigungskräfte hingegen leben womöglich gesünder, weil sie dank gut verdienendem Ehemann wohlhabender sind.
Denkbar ist auch, dass Männer aus dem Reinigungsgewerbe deutlich mehr Zigaretten konsumieren als Raucher aus einem Bürojob und als Raucherinnen ganz allgemein, denn die Studie hat ja nur berücksichtigt, ob eine Person raucht oder in der Vergangenheit geraucht hat, nicht jedoch wie viel.
Man weiß es nicht. Aber all dies erscheint mindestens nicht weniger plausibel als der Einfluss von Reinigungsmitteln speziell auf die Gesundheit von Männern.
In jedem Fall lässt die belgische Studie nicht den Schluss zu, dass der unachtsame Umgang mit Chemikalien für das höhere Gesundheitsrisiko bei Männern im Reinigungsgewerbe verantwortlich ist.
Im Gegenteil, in der Studie wurde sogar nachgewiesen, dass Mitarbeiter des Reinigungsgewerbes, die in Teilzeit arbeiten, ein höheres Sterberisiko aufweisen als Vollzeitbeschäftigte. Dies würde der Erklärung, dass der bedenkenlose Umgang mit Reinigungsmitteln für die Ergebnisse verantwortlich sei, eher widersprechen.
Männer müssen also stark sein: Den Putzlappen zu Hause abzulehnen, weil dies der schnelle Weg ins Grab ist, diese Argumentation lässt die belgische Studie mit Sicherheit nicht zu.

Is Cleaning Harmful To Men’s Health?
Drop that mop, guys! It will only shorten your life expectancy. That’s the conclusion researchers came away with based on health data collected from 1.6 million Belgians. They may be going out on a limb with that bold conclusion, commented statistics experts Björn and Sören Christensen.
For men who hate cleaning, the study from Belgium was a godsend. No more discussions at home about whose turn it is to get the bathroom cleaned up. After all, if the results of this study are anything to go by, men performing regular cleaning duties run a higher than normal mortality risk.
Let’s back up a little. Before we decide that it’s okay for men to hit the couch while women clean up, it may be worth taking a closer look at the results of the study. While there is little to learn about men doing cleaning chores, there’s much more to learn about drawing hasty conclusions from statistics.
In a recent study, the Brussels researchers Laura Van den Borre and Patrick Deboosere examined whether employees of the Belgian cleaning industry showed an increased mortality risk when compared to office workers.
Using data from nearly 1.6 million Belgians collected between 1991 and 2011, the researchers analyzed the impact of that occupational activity on mortality risk.
Part-time work and type of work makes a difference
And yes, there are indications that employees in the Belgian cleaning industry showed a 45 percent higher mortality rate than their male counterparts with office jobs. For women, this difference was significantly smaller. In addition, with both sexes a distinction was made between different types of cleaning activities.
Now, every well-trained statistician will be aware that results of this nature have to be interpreted with a grain of salt. After all, there may be differences in lifestyle between the average cleaning worker and office worker.
To some extent, the authors of the study factored this in. Age, gender, number of hours (full-time or part-time) and subjects’ level of training were taken into account. The authors also considered whether a person is or used to be a smoker, but only indirectly, because that data was drawn from other sources.
Is male gender a risk factor?
The media ate up the study’s conclusion that men in the cleaning industry have a higher mortality risk. "Why men have a high mortality risk when cleaning" or "People who clean a lot, die sooner" were some of the headlines sparked by the study.
One of the authors, Laura Van den Borre, surmises that men’s improper use of cleaning agents could be the cause of a higher mortality rate. According to Van den Borre, the risk is even greater in private households because cleaning agents tend to be handled even less safely there.
Of course, few would dispute that careless handling of cleaning agents could be detrimental to one’s health. But whether the Belgian study actually showed that men are more irresponsible in their use of cleaning agents and are therefore exposed to a higher mortality risk is much more questionable.
That insight doesn’t require any advanced statistical knowledge. In fact, it’s enough to consider what other factors could have an impact on life expectancy. What comes to mind readily are nutrition, physical exercise and stress. There could be significant differences between male and female cleaners. None of that was taken into account at all simply because there was no data available.
Perhaps, professional cleaning takes such a heavy toll on men that they’re left with less leisure time for health-inducing physical exercise than people holding office jobs. Or their jobs are simply more stressful than those of their female counterparts.
Important data not available
Another hypothesis is that male employees in the cleaning industry pay less attention to healthy nutrition, possibly, because their lower pay offers fewer opportunities to develop those skills. Female cleaners, on the other hand, may live healthier lives because of the solid incomes their spouses contribute to family wealth.
It is also conceivable that men in the cleaning industry consume significantly more cigarettes than smokers holding office jobs and smokers in general, since the study only took into account whether a person smokes or has smoked in the past, but not how much.
So we simply don't know. None of this seems any less plausible than the specific impact of cleaning agents on men's health.
In any case, the Belgian study does not allow for the conclusion that careless handling of chemicals is responsible for the higher health risk among men in the cleaning industry.
What’s more, the study showed that part-time cleaning personnel have a higher mortality risk than full-time employees. This would seem to contradict the explanation that indiscriminate use of cleaning agents is responsible for the results.
So guys, man up and drop that attitude, not the mop. The Belgian study may have demonstrated a lot of things. But it certainly didn't demonstrate that all those chores will put you on the fast track to the grave.
