English to Arabic: The hacker evolution/revolution General field: Science Detailed field: Computers (general)
Source text - English The hacker evolution/revolution
Before the early 70's, electronic computing or calculating devices were bulky, expensive, non-user-friendly, and strictly the province of large organizations. Although hacking had made its appearance a good decade earlier, it was very much a minority sport since systems were closed and the effort : benefit ratio was definitely against those early hackers (other than for the acquisition of bragging rights).
From talking to people who were there at the time, I reckon it all changed with the introduction of the Sinclair Cambridge calculator in 1973. They tell me it was cumbersome, the key pad hurt your fingers, and you took your future in your hands if you relied upon its ability to correctly compute functions like xy or Sin x. That said, it heralded the dawn of the personal computer era which, of course, was always destined to attract the criminal element.
Since then the world of communications has changed beyond all recognition. Hackers have progressed from being acne-ridden geeks hidden away in Stygian bedrooms surrounded by moldering pizza crusts, to power- dressing super-criminals who drift in complete luxury from one tax haven to another. Likewise, crime has gone from being largely for the gaining of status to encompassing the other three S's - silver, sedition and sex.
Unfortunately, as we are seeing, criminals can adapt much faster than our defenses. They thrive on the laissez-faire attitude of "It'll never happen to us", "It's forbidden for our employees to visit those kind of websites" or "We've got anti-virus programs and a firewall so we're OK". 'Yes it will', 'yes they do' and 'no you won't be'.
The first hackers
Early to mid Twentieth Century
Probably the very first case that one might call 'hacking' occurred in 1903 when British magician Nevil Maskelyne disrupted a demonstration of Marconi's (supposedly secure) wireless telegraph system by transmitting a string of rude messages through the lecture hall where the device was being demonstrated.
In the early 1940's at Bletchley Park, England, Alan Turing, Harold Keen, and Gordon Welchman developed an electromechanical device which was able to decipher the messages sent out by the Germans using their Enigma machine.
In 1957, Joe Engressia, a blind boy from Richmond, Virginia, accidentally discovered that if he used his gift of perfect pitch to whistle the fourth 'E' above Middle C (a frequency of 2600 Hz) he could interact with phone operator AT&T's system.
The 1960's
Arguably hacking in a fore-runner of the form we recognize it today was first started at MIT in 1961 when the university acquired a PDP-1 (Programmed Data Processor) computer. The bulky and now what we would undoubtedly consider to be ugly and utilitarian machine attracted the attention of the university's tech model club who wrote many new programs and also developed pioneering ways of using the computer.
As the club expanded and innovated, they gradually thought up a new language to describe what they were doing and so the slang used by today's hackers was born.
The 1970's
Realizing the potential afforded by the inadvertent discovery of Joe Engressia, hackers tried whistling at 2600 Hz in order to gain access to AT&T's telephone system. The reason for doing this was that it enabled them to make free international and long-distance phone calls - a practice they named 'phreaking'. John Draper was one of the more notorious of these phreakers although he was better known as Cap'n Crunch after his discovery that a plastic whistle being given away with breakfast cereal at the time produced a perfect blast at 2600 Hz.
Phreaking was not to remain a private enterprise as its practitioners quickly realized that they could make large sums of money by simply offering reduced price calls to those unaware of the secret but desirous of its benefits.
A major aide in this respect was the development of the first computer bulletin board by Randy Suess and Ward Christenson. Using this facility, hackers could meet up together in what was soon to become private cyberspace.
John Draper had one more major role to play in the history of hacking. Towards the end of the decade, he would invent a 'blue box' which could be used to gain access to the entire phone network - a concept which two other hackers would find fascinating. Their names were Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs - the founders of Apple.
The 1980's
The 1980's was the decade that the previously 'strictly sci-fi' concept of personal computers became a reality. Apples, Commodores and Sinclairs were 'must haves' - mainly because of the games like Asteroids, Star Trek and Pac-Man that could be played on them. Because such games were not cheap, there was a real incentive among hackers to break into these programs and then to distribute the unhacked versions to their friends. At that time encryption, methods were relatively unsophisticated and often consisted of little more than an electronic padlock.
Since PC's had become so prevalent and there was now the means for 'hooking up', hacking became immensely popular - particularly with the young. Mainframes and networks were springing up among businesses and, by the middle of the decade, viruses had already become a threat.
In 1986, under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, it became a felony to break into computer systems - the beginning of the criminalization of hacking. The very first felon to be prosecuted under this new law was Robert Tappan Morris, the son of an ex-NSA scientist. While at Cornell University, he had invented a worm (called unsurprisingly the 'Morris Worm') which he let loose on a young internet.
Morris claimed that he only wrote the script to 'see how big the internet was' but his virus succeeded in replicating repeatedly and, in doing so, slowing down an estimated 6,000 host computers until they were effectively useless. For his efforts, Morris received a fine of $10,500, 400 hours of community service, and 3 years' probation. It seemingly didn't do him too much harm in the long-term as he is currently employed as a tenured professor at MIT.
The early 90's
The introduction of NCSA's graphical worldwide web browser in 1993 was the opening of the floodgates as far as hacking went. No longer constrained by (relatively) poor communications, hackers could share snippets of code, ideas for incursions, and general hacking information to like-minded individuals anywhere on the planet.
In 1995, Kevin Mitnick acquired the title of "the most wanted computer criminal in United States history".
At the age of 13, he began his hacking career in suitably brazen fashion by taking illegal advantage of the punch card system operated by the Los Angeles bus network. Using a combination of dumpster diving adjacent to the bus company garage (in order to get unused transfer slips) and a ruse through which he found out where the bus company got their ticket punches from by telling a conductor that he needed the information for his school project, he was able to travel anywhere free of charge.
From there he branched out into phreaking and he also hacked into the Digital Equipment Corporation's network where he stole software; this earned him his first conviction in 1995. He received a sentence of 12 months imprisonment plus 3 years supervised release.
Mitnick absconded near the end of the supervisory period after having hacked into the Pacific Bell voice mail computers. He then spent the next 30 months on a spree, which involved more hacking, misappropriating confidential corporate material, scrambling telephone networks, reading private emails, stealing passwords, and even breaking into the US defense warning system.
He was finally captured in 1999 along with numerous cloned cellular phones and over a hundred cloned cellular phone codes. Ironically, his fatal mistake had been hacking into the computer of fellow hacker Tsutomu Shimomura.
This time he was sentenced to 46 months imprisonment for the offenses plus a further 22 months for absconding from the previous supervised release. He served 4½ years pretrial and a further 8 months solitary confinement because he was (according to the prosecutor) capable of hacking into the NORAD computer via an ordinary payphone and then starting a nuclear holocaust simply by whistling to the modem.
His story has since been turned into two films - Takedown and Freedom Downtime.
These days Mitnick is a reformed man and works as a security consultant, author and public speaker based out of Las Vegas.
Why operating systems matter (UNIX/Linux)
Unix
UNIX was originally developed at the Bell Labs in order to provide a time-sharing platform for their computers and it was the first operating system to use the now common 'C' language. UNIX offers its users an off-the- peg range of straightforward tools, a file organizational system, and shell scripting to allow for more complex operations.
The principal characteristics of UNIX are that it:
• Employs a hierarchical file storage system
• Uses plain text to store data
• Considers devices and IPCs (Inter-Process Communications) as files
• Chains its software tools together as required by the user via a command line statement. This is in contrast to Windows-like programs which are much larger and, relatively speaking, more inflexible.
One of the main advantages of UNIX is that it needs less hard drive space than other operating systems. For example, Windows 7 can easily occupy 40 Gb while Fedora UNIX requires only about 10 Gb although more will be taken up if additional packages are installed (such as games modules and plug ins).
UNIX was the very first operating system to be written as open source
- an essential for hackers (as we shall see) and is now available as freeware with the OpenBSD and Solaris versions being the most popular.
The operating system consists of four elements - the kernel, the shell, the processes, and the files which these control. Because I'm going to be referring to these elements, let's quickly look at what each does.
The kernel - This is the part that does the real work and lies at the center of the system. It tells the machine how to allocate its resources (processing time, memory etc) and controls the file storage system.
The shell - This program is the interface between the kernel and the human operator and is initiated as soon as the user has correctly logged in. It's what is referred to as a 'Command Line Interpreter' (CLI) because it takes the operator's commands and translates them into a language which the kernel can understand.
Processes - Processes are the programs which are executed by the user via the shell program and each one has its own unique PID (Process Identifier).
Files - Collections of data (text, graphics etc) which have been created by the user and which may be in the format of a high level language (such as created by a word processing program) or as a string of binary digits, or offer information about the structure of a directory.
Anyone familiar with the old DOS (Disk Operating System) which was introduced in the early 1980's will certainly find the commands used by UNIX to be very familiar. The new versions of UNIX also have a GUI (Graphical User Interface) although purists can choose to run the operating system without this option having been installed.
There are a number of variants of UNIX, these being:
Linux is a derivative of the original UNIX system and has been developed as an open source program which means that anyone can legally modify the source code and then distribute it either commercially or non- commercially as they see fit.
It was developed by a Helsinki university student, Linus Torvalds, back in 1991. In those days, only the big UNIX computers which were owned by major organizations could operate programs such as web browsing and e- mail. Linus decided to adapt the UNIX kernel and thereby create a new and freely available operating system.
Linux was born.
Most domestic users are Windows-minded. We're accustomed to Microsoft's domination of the market and, if pushed, probably most home- users would only be able to list their products. Linux is definitely a viable alternative and with the added benefit, of course, of being available entirely free of charge. If you use Linux or are thinking of doing so, you're in good company - just to demonstrate what I mean, here's a list of some people who've beaten you to it:
• Amazon
• Facebook
• Google
• IBM
• Japanese Bullet Trains
• McDonalds
• NY Stock Exchange
• Pizza Hut
• Twitter
• US Navy
Submarines
• US Postal Service
• Wikipedia
Linux comes in a variety of different packages (known as 'distributions') but all are free and, more to the point, can be adapted in any way that the operator chooses (no 'you have breached the terms of your license' fears).
• Debian Linux
• Fedora Linux
• Gentoo Linux
• Linux Mint
• Mandriva Linux
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux
• Slackware Linux
• SUSE Linux Enterprise
• Ubuntu Linux
Just like UNIX, Linux has a GUI however it is an intrinsic part of the program while, in UNIX, the OS can be run exclusively from command line prompts.
Why hackers like UNIX and Linux
As I explained earlier in this book, there is no one type of hacker and therefore no single method by which they operate. That said, the UNIX and Linux platforms have both proved immensely popular over the years among the hackiverse community. These days, Linux is definitely much more in vogue than its parent although the freely available OpenBSD version of UNIX still has its share of devotees.
You might be forgiven for thinking that, since Windows is so popular among domestic users of personal computers, it would be the preferred weapon of choice for hackers. It's not, though, and hackers like Linux over Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X for the following ten principal reasons:
• Linux is completely free and doesn't, therefore, need to be registered
• It's much simpler to work with than the likes of Windows
• It has a non-proprietary operating system which has been designed to be accessible, flexible and adaptable
• It possesses a stable platform to work from
• It doesn't need regular reboots
• It's much faster to run than other OS's on any given machine
• Having open source code means there's no possibility for a breach of its license
• It's not prone to being open to vulnerabilities itself
• There's an open community keen to provide updates, modifications and advice
• It will operate alongside Windows OS in the same disk partition therefore new exploits written using Linux can easily be tested against a Windows backdrop
The early days of the internet
Electronic computers first started appearing on the scene in the early 1950's and it is arguable that the internet's birth harks back to those days. It's certainly true to say that many of the ideas which we now take for granted date from then although the actual Worldwide Web (W3) which we now use only really came to being after having been put forward by the English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989.
During the space of the next few years he also introduced the first web browser (the 'WorldWideWeb' later to become 'Nexus') and this latter browser incorporated the idea of hyperlinked applications - something which had first appeared in the middle of the 1980's.
Towards the end of that decade, commercially owned ISP's (Internet Service Providers) began to emerge. The very first of its kind was an American one called 'The World' which opened its hyperspatial doors in 1989.
Translation - Arabic
