English to French: Tough by Greg Everett General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English What are you willing to do? This simple question that underlies the element of commitment is both expansive and unfathomably deep in its implications. Commitment encompasses the other three elements of being tough—character, capability, and capacity—and either fortifies their development and invigorates their expression, or starves their growth and chokes them into submission. Our commitment is what continues breathing life into all facets of being tough, fertilizes the soil that allows them to thrive, clears the space for them to expand, and builds the network of pathways that carry us through the process. Without commitment and the action it induces, the other traits become meaningless fantasies—little more than self-serving fairy tales we tell ourselves to prop up our egos in the absence of good reason.
Commitment is also its own critical element of being tough that contributes just as much unique value as character, capability and capacity. The mental and physical acts of commitment are where the true demands of life lie—this is what allows us to push uphill, against the wind, and through the depths that threaten to hold us down, drive us off track, or drown our intentions. Commitment is what translates our ideas and plans into action and results and allows us to become who we intend to be.
Hannibal, legendary general of Carthage during the second Punic War, is credited with the phrase, “Aut inveniam viam aut faciam”—I shall find a way or make one. He demonstrated this ultimate commitment by doing what was presumed impossible, even by his own officers—marching his army, replete with elephants, through the Alps into Italy in order to defeat the Roman army. The expressions and results of our commitment may never reach this level of historical significance, but they unquestionably have the potential to change our own lives just as dramatically.
Translation - French Qu’êtes-vous prêts à faire ?
English to French: The Five Wishes of Mr Murray McBride by Joe Siple General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English Jason’s face is scrunched up in a look I recognize from my own boys, although only once or twice. Crabbiest face you’ve ever seen. Says something about his character that he keeps his mouth shut. I try to do the same, but can’t do it.
“Didn’t have to pack the kitchen sink,” I say under my breath.
He shakes his head like it’s the dumbest thing he’s ever heard. “Why would anyone pack a kitchen sink? I mean seriously, how could you even get it in a suitcase?”
“It’s an expression. Means you packed more than—”
“You couldn’t even get it out of the kitchen! What, are you just supposed to pick it up?!”
There’s a little shuffling in the back seat by Jason’s suitcase, which
seems just about impossible. I can’t twist my head around very far these days, but in the rear-view mirror, Tiegan Rose Marie Atherton’s face is poking through a small hole between my little duffle bag and Jason’s giant suitcase.
“Will you two be quiet? You’re going to get us caught.”
Can’t honestly say I was expecting that one. Tiegan in my back seat, I mean. I was pretty clear in my letter that she shouldn’t come and she sure seemed to agree with me on that point, if I remember correctly.
“What on God’s green earth are you doing here?” I say.
“Schweet!” Jason says.
Tiegan just shrugs. “I obviously couldn’t say I was coming with you, in case my mom checked my email. But did you really think I’d miss this?”
“I certainly did. What about your Little League game? What if we get caught? What if you go to jail?”
Tiegan waves it away with a flick of her wrist. “We’re playing the Dynamite and they aren’t any good. But Mr. McBride? We probably shouldn’t sit here in the middle of the street, you know? We’re not exactly inconspicuous.”
Not sure what I think of a little girl using words I don’t know, but I get the feeling every time I see her that she’s more than meets the eye. A line-drive-hitting dictionary? Not your typical kid, that much even an old-timer like me can figure out.
I fiddle with the keys but it’s dark as night out here. Course, it is night. The middle of the night. After a few seconds of scraping the key against the dashboard, Jason starts giggling. He’s sure in a better mood since Tiegan arrived. I push the key harder, trying to find the ignition, but no dice. Jason’s belly-laughing now and even Tiegan seems to be having a hard time holding it in. “I think it’s a little to the left, Mr. McBride,” Tiegan says, and sure enough, as soon as I move it left a bit I find the right spot.
I ignore Jason’s bellowing laughs—so much for trying to keep a low profile—and start the car. A few moments later I pull the Chevy around the corner, just as a porch light flips on in the house we were sitting in front of. But they’re too late. I weave my way through residential streets until Jason’s neighborhood disappears from the rear-view mirror.
Next stop, The Windy City.
— Ça n’a aucun sens !
