Translation - Chinese Han Yue Lou Resort & SPA Jiuhuashan
The project is located in Kecun Village, Chizhou City, Anhui Province, China, with a total area of 3.5 hectares, less than 3 kilometers away from Mount Jiuhua scenic spot. Mount Jiuhua is one of the Four Great Buddhist Mountains of China, where 99-meter-high Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva bronze statue can be seen. The existing site is very flat, surrounded by numerous mountains. The project is designed to integrate Huizhou style architecture and traditional history, as well as Buddhist culture, providing a tourism destination to allow modern people to have leisure and relaxation. At the same time, the design team attaches great importance to building ecological system and adjusting to sustainable development, minimizing post-management cost and energy consumption.
Preservation and Integration of Ecological Environment
1. Introduction of Flowing water—without artificial recharge, reducing energy consumption and operation management expenditure.
There’s a mountain spring running all year around that never dries up on the north side behind the mountain. Inspired by the introduction of flowing water, the landscape architect has directed the spring water down as a number of streams, which finally converge into the central lake. It connects all water lines of the entire hotel flowing throughout every scene, forming the most unique characteristic and appreciation-worthy water surface in the resort. The whole lake relies mainly on natural mountain spring and rainfalls without any artificial supplement. The natural hydrological cycle system is provided by shaping terrain to reduce post-energy consumption and operation management expenditure. Meanwhile, it makes the water flow effectively and sustains the water clean and clear.
2. Using Design Method of Borrowing Scenery from Nature
The core area of the project is not large, but it relies on the central lake. It is similar to the design concept of borrowing scenery in Chinese classical garden, as the mountain is compared to the screen and the water is just like a mirror, turning into the biggest feature of the project. The natural mountain, sacred Buddha statue, and Huizhou traditional residence of pastoral scenes are reflected on the lake, blending the hotel into its environment.
3. Application of Native Tree Species—to show the natural beauty of the original ecology in spring and autumn.
The original terrain is kept basically unchanged despite the higher terrain on the northern hillside. In order to achieve an earthwork balance, the artificial lake soils are piled up to increase the terrain height. Moreover, Jiuhuashan Cloud-fog Tea trees are planted adaptive to special terrain, creating the Cloud-fog-voiceless Pavilion (named as “Yunwu Qingyin Ting” in Chinese) where the surrounding scenery can be overlooked. The resort is surrounded by lush green vegetations which belong to local native species. All native tree species are selected to ensure the adaptation to the soil, combined with the original terrain to form the optimum ecological environment and microclimate conditions and embody the vital beauty of four seasons.
The Application and Development of Chinese Traditional Culture
1. Using Huizhou “Three Carvings”—to realize the goal of reviving Chinese traditional handicraft art.
Huizhou culture is one of the Three Great Regional Cultures in China that originated in Song Dynasty. The three most famous carving styles in Huizhou are brick, stone and wood carvings, which embody the essence of Huizhou style architecture and represent the wisdom of traditional crafts. The carvings related to the stone bridges beside the lake, Chinese carved jade Ruyi, and Chinese ground pavement pattern Xiangyun, are all handcrafted by local Chinese craftsmen, which reviving Chinese traditional handicraft art.
2. Chinese Circle—the charm of Chinese classical garden
Chinese circle is the moon gate in Chinese classical garden, named for the moon-shaped circular opening in a garden wall, which is regarded as happy reunion. The traditional architectural element is used throughout the entire garden, incorporated with the architecture in particular, breaking the existing architecture façade of monotonous sense. For instance, Huizhou traditional residence beside the lake transforms the moon gate into a frame, acting as the bridge between architecture and artificial landscape as well as the nature.
