Preciso che sottano è un termine di origine dialettale comunemente usato per designare un ambiente composto da una o due stanze. Può essere al piano terra o anche un seminterrato. Si trova nei centri storici dell'area pugliese e lucana. I 'sottani' sono paragonabili al 'basso' napoletano o al 'fondaco'. A Siena li chiamano 'fondi'.

Naturalmente lascio il termine in italiano ma come potrei glossarlo in inglese tra parentesi ?
