The "Plus Ultra" coat of arms represents two columns (the pillars of Hercules) which bear the caption "plus ultra" (more beyond), meaning, leaving the Pillars of Gibraltar there was America and all that lay beyond, the new empire to which Charles V had become heir thanks to his mother Isabel la Católica. This was to be seen in all the "reales" (coins of the period) up to the time of Franco.
Giulio Romano was the court artist of Charles V, and although he was an Italian of the Renaissance his name is not translated, like Pietro Aretino (Peter of Arezzo?)
