Convergencia i Unió

Spanish to English Social Sciences Government / Politics
(Spain) I don't need/want the translation of the name, but instead, of what kind of group it is. A labor union? A political party? (I suspect the latter.) Thanks.

Discussion

Timothy Barton Jan 26, 2006:
For the sake of people finding this page in future, it should be pointed out that this is a right-of-centre nationalist party (technically speaking, two parties), as opposed to Esquerra Repblicana de Catalunya, which is a left-wing nationalist party.

Selected

nationalist political party of Catalonia (Cataluña/Catalunya).

Presently in power on the regional level. Secretary General Jordi Pujol; he's also president of the Generalitat de Catalunya. There are other nationalist political parties (Esguerra Republicana), but this is the biggest. Until the last national elections, it was also considered the "kingmaker" around here (Spain).

It's a decades-old traditional political party, currently in power in the Catalonian Parliament (Spain) and with representatives in the Spanish parliament and senate.

two-party coalition

it is in fact a long-standing coalition of two very similar parties, both Catalan nationalist and both conservative/christian democrats, but they have separate party organs etc. They have been together for so long and diffrences between them are so slight that in fact everyone thinks of them as a single political party.
