"hendidura/cleavage" sounds good... Explanation: I didn't find "hienda" anywhere, but given that its synonym is apparently "fisilidad," you're probably on safe ground, so to speak. "Fissility" has the same Latin root as "fission," of course. The term in the nuke business is "fissionable," but in geology a material that can be split along the line of its grain (i.e., along its cleavage plane) is said to be "fissile." Cheers, HC |

(slaty) cleavage or fissility (see beautiful description below) Explanation: Slate is a very fine-grained, exceptionally well-foliated, low-grade, regionally metamorphosed rocks. Because of their excellent foliation, they split into thin sheets. The fissility (slaty cleavage) results from the parallel alignment of numerous fine phyllosilicate (platy) minerals (e.g. muscovite and chlorite). Mineral grains are too small to be identified without the microscope or X-rays. Slate is dull on cleavage surfaces; phyllite is shiny and coarser grained, containing some mineral grains large enough to be identified by the eye.
