Dental caries is a bacterially based disease that progresses when acid produced by bacterial action on dietary fermentable carbohydrates diffuses into the tooth and dissolves the mineral, that is, demineralization. Pathological factors including acidogenic bacteria (mutans streptococci and lactobacilli), salivary dysfunction, and dietary carbohydrates are related to caries progression. Protective factors which include salivary calcium, phosphate and proteins, salivary flow, and fluoride in saliva can balance, prevent or reverse dental caries. Fluoride works primarily via topical mechanisms which include (1) inhibition of demineralization at the crystal surfaces inside the tooth, (2) enhancement of remineralization at the crystal surfaces (the resulting remineralized layer is very resistant to acid attack), and (3) inhibition of bacterial enzymes. Fluoride in drinking water and in fluoride-containing products reduces tooth decay via these mechanisms. Low but slightly elevated levels of fluoride in saliva and plaque provided from these sources help prevent and reverse caries by inhibiting demineralization and enhancing remineralization. The level of fluoride incorporated into dental mineral by systemic ingestion is insufficient to play a significant role in caries prevention. The effect of systemically ingested fluoride on caries is minimal. Fluoride "supplements" can be best used as a topical delivery system by sucking or chewing tablets or lozenges prior to ingestion. | Translation - Italian
La carie dentale è una malattia a eziologia batterica che progredisce allorquando gli acidi prodotti dalla azione batterica sui carboidrati fermentabili della dieta diffondono all’interno del dente e ne dissolvono la componente minerale, realizzandone in tal modo la demineralizzazione. Fattori patologici quali la presenza di batteri acidogenici (streptococcus mutans e lattobacilli), disfunzioni salivari e i carboidrati contenuti nella dieta sono coinvolti nella progressione della carie. Fattori protettivi che includono il calcio salivare, fosfati e proteine, flusso salivare e il fluoro presente nella saliva possono bilanciare, prevenire, o far regredire la carie dentale. significativo nella prevenzione della carie. L’effetto esercitato mediante l’introduzione sistemica di fluoro sulla carie dentale è minimo. I “supplementi” al fluoro possono essere utilizzati al meglio come sistema topico di rilascio quando le pastiglie o le compresse vengono succhiate o masticate prima di essere ingerite.

All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

I pellegrini vecchio stampo, tali da desiderare semplicemente di fermarsi e ammirare il posto con le loro antiquatissime pupille, si ritrovano spintonati di lato dai fotografi, i quali danno per scontato che, mentre loro si dedicano al rituale della messa a fuoco, a nulla è concesso di muoversi né di attraversare la loro visuale. I devianti senza macchina fotografica devono cedere il passo a coloro più propriamente occupati, pazientare mentre si compie il rito e attendere il proprio turno, mentre intere carovane si fermano e scatenano sul paesaggio il dio dell’istantanea. E popoli di interi paesi, che si vedono cannibalizzati, ingoiati, risucchiati all’interno dell’occhio invadente cerchiato di nero, estorcono a loro volta ciò che possono ai cannibali. Vuoi fotografare la mia casa, il mio cammello? E allora, paga!
Niente di tutto ciò sarebbe degno di nota se, in conclusione, ne scaturisse qualcosa di buono. Se l’incessante affaccendamento e l’incalzante rumore dei clic producessero, infine, ciò che prima non era, immagini di bellezza catturata o verità rivelate. Ma, amaramente, non è così. La fotocamera non è altro che graffiti elevato di rango.
La macchina fotografica è il mezzo mediante il quale imprimiamo noi stessi su tutto ciò che vediamo, con l’alibi di immortalare le meraviglie del mondo già meravigliosamente immortalate dai professionisti e in vendita in ogni libreria e chiosco di giornali. Ma che senso avrebbe mostrare a zia Matilde, una volta tornati a casa, le cartoline delle colline toscane visitate, dal momento che noi non siamo nella foto che lo proverebbe?
Lo stagliarsi dei crinali non è reale, se io non ne faccio parte.
Non esiste alcun monumento se non per mia moglie, appoggiatacisi mollemente sopra. Nessun tempio è rimarchevole, se privo dell’immagine della mia faccia di lato ad esso, che sogghigno.
Con la mia macchinetta fotografica mi approprio di tutto ciò che è bello, lo posseggo, lo rimpicciolisco, lo addomestico e lo riproduco sulla squallida parete del tinello, per dimostrare a un selezionato pubblico di amici e parenti l'unico fatto assolutamente basilare riguardo a tali bellezze: io le ho viste, c'ero, le ho fotografate ed, ergo, esistono.
