I have had to translate similar texts several times and making civil code language sound natural in English isn't always easy. (Does one call "la cosa" the "thing"???) It may be useful to look at the terminology used in the Louisiana Civil Code (originally in English) or English translations of the French Civil Code and particularly the German BGB (many parts of which are online).
