Source text - English Firewater – A Brief History The Beginning: NYC Firewater was birthed in a Brooklyn basement in the long, hot summer of1997. Depressed, broke, and desperate, ex-Cop Shoot Cop leader Tod A tossed away a major label deal and a free meal ticket to launch what - at the time - was a crazy proposition: a punk band fueled by gypsy and klezmer tunes. Tod had stumbled upon a dusty box of records and cassettes in a Russian junk shop on west 14th street, and had fallen in love with the happy/sad conflict embodied in Eastern European melodies. He wanted to combine the mystery and melodrama of these tragic-comic sounds with the energy of his first love: punk rock. When Firewater’s first record, Get Off The Cross (We Need the Wood for the Fire), came out, critics and fans were excited - and confused. The press was enthusiastic - but between the lines lay a lot of questions: How can we pigeonhole this? What is this all about? However, ten years (and five records) later, Tod’s crazy idea doesn’t sound quite so crazy anymore. Bands as diverse as Gogol Bordello, Balkan Beat Box and Beirut owe a debt to his early adventurousness. In the meantime, the internet has opened the ears of millions of people to music from around the world. Firewater’s music has never fit very well into pre-fabricated boxes. A compulsive traveler, Tod has always been inspired by the stories, people, and music of the places he has visited. The records that followed (The Ponzi Scheme, Psychopharmacology, The Man on the Burning Tightrope, Songs We Should Have Written) were musical mash-ups that threw together flavors as seemingly disparate as spy jazz, ska, classic Bollywood, salsa, cabaret, Mexican banda, and Russian folk - to create a distinctive brew that was always 100% Firewater. Every interesting development in music has been the result of clashing cultures – of mash-ups: the Rom (‘gypsies’) migrated from India through Eastern Europe to infuse Balkan music; Iberian ideas fused with indigenous South American tunes to form tango and mambo and meringue; the American shotgun marriage of Saharan blues and English folksongs gave birth to rock’n’roll – these are but three of many examples. Firewater has always fed on these strange amalgamations. “It’s a bit like being a mad scientist,” Tod says. “You mix a bit of this with some of that. You’re never sure what’s going to happen”. Not every experiment is successful. “But I’d rather blow up the laboratory than keep reinventing the wheel.” Some songs have been flawed, over-the-top, even brutal. But they always seem to capture some humor and beauty. Through Firewater’s canon runs a jagged line of lyrical intellect and unrelenting emotional honesty. Never one to rest on a gimmick, Tod is constantly challenging himself and his fans by musically re-inventing the band. Neither strictly “solo project” nor “rock group”, Firewater could best be described as a loose musical collective. A steady stream of diverse talent has flowed through Firewater’s open doors. Members over the years have included Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard), Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields), Oren Kaplan (Gogol Bordello), and Tamir Muskat (Balkan Beat Box). Firewater will never revert to a mere formula. “I think there will always be people that would rather be surprised, instead of just satiated.” The Golden Hour In 2005, Firewater’s Tod A embarked on what would become a three year sabbatical through the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent and South East Asia. He had recently split with his wife; George W. Bush had just been re-elected; New York, his home for the last 20 years, had become a cold and foreign place. He wasn’t even sure he wanted to make music anymore. “I was extremely depressed. The NYC skyline looked like bad wallpaper to me. It was either kill myself or hit the road,” he says. He put everything he owned in storage and left NYC with a few clothes and a laptop. The journey Tod undertook would challenge him creatively in ways he couldn’t have imagined in its planning stages. “I traveled overland starting in Delhi, India, across the Thar Desert, then through Rajasthan, onward through the Punjab, and into Pakistan,” he recounts. “I had originally planned to continue overland through Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey, ending in Istanbul.” But things didn’t go exactly as planned. Along the way he was drugged, robbed, detained, and later struck down with severe intestinal problems. Travelers were disappearing along the road to Kabul. As Tod puts it, “I was forced to end my trip at the Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, due to general ill health and the unnerving likelihood of kidnapping.” Recording with a single microphone and a laptop in his backpack, he captured performances with a vast array of musicians across India and Pakistan - and eventually Turkey and Israel. Bhangra and Sufi percussion would form the basis for the songs he wrote along the way - songs about the world he left behind (This Is My Life, Electric City), politics (Borneo, Hey Clown), and dislocation (6:45, Feels like the End of the World). Tod’s acerbic wit shines on The Golden Hour, elucidating both the beauty and the absurdity of the world. Firewater drummer Tamir Muskat (now also of HYPERLINK "http://www.balkanbeatbox.com/"Balkan Beat Box) produced, mixed and played on the album, along with a strange cast of characters from 5 different countries. Firewater zawsze karmi się takimi dziwnymi zlepkami. „To trochę tak, jak by się było stukniętym naukowcem”- mówi Tod. „Mieszasz trochę tego z odrobiną tamtego. Nigdy nie wiesz, co z tego wyniknie.” Nie każdy eksperyment się udaje. „Ale wolę wysadzić laboratorium w powietrze niż wiecznie odkrywać koło”. Niektóre kawałki mają skazy, są przegięte, nawet brutalne. Ale zawsze udaje im się uchwycić trochę humoru i piękna. Cały kanon Firewatera naznaczony jest postrzępioną linią lirycznego intelektu i nieustającej uczuciowej uczciwości.
Tod nie ma w zwyczaju iść na łatwiznę, dlatego ciągle stawia wyzwania sobie i swoim fanom poprzez muzyczne redefiniowanie zespołu. Ani to „solowy projekt” w ścisłym tego słowa znaczeniu, ani „grupa rockowa” – Firewatera można by określić mianem luźnego muzycznego kolektywu. Przez jego otwarte drzwi przelał się cały strumień rozmaitych talentów. Przewinęli się tacy muzycy jak Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard), Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields), Oren Kaplan (Gogol Bordello), i Tamir Muskat (Balkan Beat Box). Firewater nigdy nie oprze na jakiejś konkretnej formule. „Myślę, że zawsze znajdą się ludzie, którzy wolą być zaskoczeni, a nie po prostu zaspokojeni”.
„The Golden Hour”
W 2005 roku Tod A z Firewater rozpoczął trzyletnią podróż przez Środkowy Wschód, subkontynent indyjski i Południowo-Wschodnią Azję. Właśnie rozstał się z żoną; George W. Bush został ponownie wybrany na prezydenta; Nowy Jork, jego dom przez poprzednie dwadzieścia lat, stał się zimnym i obcym miejscem. Nawet nie był pewien, czy dalej chce robić muzykę. „Byłem strasznie zdołowany. Nowy Jork wyglądał dla mnie jak tapeta. Miałem do wyboru strzelić sobie w łeb albo ruszyć w drogę” – mówi Tod. Oddał wszystko co miał do przechowalni, i wyjechał z Nowego Jorku z kilkoma ubraniami i laptopem.
Podróż postawiła przed nim twórcze wyzwania, których nawet sobie nie wyobrażał na etapie jej planowania. „Podróż lądem zaczęła się w Delhi, dalej wiodła przez pustynię Thar, Radżasthan, do Pendżabu, i do Pakistanu” – wylicza. „Planowałem kontynuować przez Afganistan, Iran i Turcję, z finałem w Istambule”. Ale nie poszło zgodnie z planem. W drodze ktoś go nafaszerował narkotykami, został obrabowany, zatrzymany, a później miał poważne problemy z jelitami. Turyści znikali wzdłuż drogi do Kabulu. Jak stwierdza Tod – „Musiałem zakończyć podróż w Przełęczy Chajberskiej na granicy z Afganistanem, za względu na zdrowie i niepokojące prawdopodobieństwo porwania”.
Przy pomocy jednego mikrofonu i laptopa nagrał całą rzeszę najróżniejszych muzyków z Indii i Pakistanu, a później z Turcji i Izraela. Perkusje ze stylów muzycznych bhangra i sufi stały się podstawą kawałków napisanych po drodze – o świecie, który zostawił za sobą („This Is My Life”, „Electric City”), polityce („Borneo”, „Hey Clown”) i braku przynależności („6:45”, „Feel Like the End of the World”). Na „Golden Hour” dużo jest sarkazmu, za pomocą którego Tod opisuje zarówno piękno jaki i absurdalność tego świata.
Tamir Muskat, perkusista Firewater (teraz także Balkan Beat Box), wyprodukował i zmiksował płytę, a także na niej zagrał, przy współudziale dziwnej zbieraniny z pięciu krajów. Latem 2009 roku zespół pojawi się na wielu festiwalach na całym świecie, w tym z pierwszą wizytą w Polsce. Tod ciągle jest bezdomny, żyje na walizkach, i dobrze mu z tym.

„Handlungsfähig gegen Neonazismus und Rassismus“
Unter dem Arbeitstitel „Handlungsfähig gegen Rechtsextremismus und Rassismus“* erstellte das Bildungswerk Weiterdenken in der Heinrich Böll Stiftung e.V. im Jahre 2002 ein Konzept für die Erwachsenenbildung in Sachsen. Vor dem Hintergrund der letzten 14 Jahre, in denen Neonazis immer wieder mit brutalen Übergriffen auffielen und ein Erstarken der neonazistischen Subkultur unverkennbar wurde, sollte ein TrainerInnenpool für MultiplikatorInnen aufgebaut werden.
Gesellschaftliche Gruppen, die sich in Ihrer Arbeit mit neonazistischen Positionen, alltäglichem Rassismus und demokratiefernen Aktivitäten auseinandersetzen müssen, sollten somit in ihrer täglichen Arbeit gestärkt werden. Dafür fehlten jedoch bis dahin systematische Angebote.
Durch die gut vernetzte Struktur demokratiefördernder Vereine und Verbände in Sachsen fanden sich schnell ca. 20 Frauen und Männer, die Interesse hatten, sich zu diesem Zweck als TrainerInnen ausbilden zu lassen. Wir!
Ein solides Vorwissen brachten die meisten von Beginn an mit, da die Mehrzahl schon zuvor und bis heute im Bereich der Demokratiearbeit beruflich tätig war und ist. Eine gemeinsame Basis schafften wir uns in drei Ausbildungsphasen vom Herbst 2002 bis zum Frühjahr 2003.
Nun konnte es losgehen. In vielen gemeinsamen Stunden und Wochenenden erarbeiteten wir fortan, was wir genau machen wollen. Wir bildeten drei Arbeitsgruppen rund um die Themen Neonazismus, Rassismus und Demokratie. Konzepte wurden erstellt, diskutiert und getestet, sodass wir seit dem Herbst 2003 drei Seminarmodule unter dem neuen Namen der „LAG politisch-kulturelle Bildung Sachsen“ anbieten und durchführen konnten.
Im Frühjahr 2005 begaben wir uns auf die Suche nach neuen TrainerInnen, um unsere LAG zu erweitern. Diese wurden nach und nach durch Hospitationen und einführende Weiterbildungen in unsere Arbeit integriert, bis sie selbst in der Lage waren, die Seminartätigkeit mit zu tragen.
Seit Juli 2005 werden wir durch das Landesprogramm „Weltoffenes Sachsen“ gefördert, was uns größere Spielräume eröffnet. Wir begannen mit einer internen Evaluation unserer Seminartage und verbessern durch verstärkte interne Weiterbildungen unsere eigene Qualifikation. Außerdem erreichen wir nun durch intensivierte Öffentlichkeitsarbeit einen breiteren Teilnehmendenkreis. Zu Beginn des Jahres 2006 veränderten wir den institutionellen Rahmen der Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft und gründeten einen gemeinnützigen Verein.
Im Rahmen der Förderung durch das Landesprogramm „Weltoffenes Sachsen“ werden wir seit 2006 durch das „Institut für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung“ der Universität Bielefeld extern evaluiert. Diese bescheinigte unserer Arbeit eine sehr gute Wirkungsweise. In der letzten Zeit konnten wir unser Seminarangebot erweitern und bieten nun auch Intensivseminare zu einem vertiefenden Themenspektrum an.
Im Jahr 2007 erweiterte sich die LAG auf eine neue Gruppe von 6 erfahrener Trainerinnen und Trainer mit eigener Migrationserfahrung, die seit dem Trainings zu Themen „Empowerment im Kontext von Migration, Kultur und Rassismus“ und Diversity anbieten.
*) den bisher verwendeten Begriff 'Rechtsextremismus' haben wir Ende 2008 durch die treffendere Bezeichnung 'Neonazismus' ersetzt, der das Problem zutreffender benennt und eine sprachliche Distanz zu den von uns nicht geteilten Auffassungen gängiger Extremismustheorien ausdrücken soll.

“Empowered against neo-Nazism and Racism”
In 2002, the ThinkAhead educational division of the Heinrich Böll Foundation developed the concept of adult education in Saxony, under the working name of “Empowered against rightwing extremism and racism”*. Bearing in mind the previous 14 years in which neo-Nazi violence repeatedly came to attention and the neo-Nazi strength without a doubt increased, it was clear that a pool of trainers for multipliers (people whose work with the public and in sensitive areas makes them especially effective as messengers or role models) should be created.
Social groups that deal in their work with neo-Nazi attitudes, everyday racism and undemocratic actions, had to be strengthened. However, till then regular training opportunities did not exist.
Through the interconnected structures of democracy-supporting associations and foundations, about 20 men and women were quickly found who were interested in getting trained for this purpose. US!
Most of the group was and is able to refer to a solid background of collected experience, as the majority has already worked in pro-democracy fields. We developed a common basis for our work in three educational phases between autumn 2002 and spring 2003.
Now it could all begin. During many hours and weekends we worked out what exactly we wanted to do. We created three working groups around the themes of neo-Nazism, racism and democracy. Concepts were established, discussed and tested, so that in autumn 2003 we could offer and lead three seminar modules under the new name: Federal State Co-operation for Political and Cultural Education in Saxony (LAG pokuBi).
Early in 2005 we started looking for new trainers who could expand our LAG. They would be integrated into our work through trainings and visitations, until they felt they were confident enough to lead seminars on their own.
Since July 2005 we have been supported by the federal state project World-open Saxony, which gave us much more room to manoeuvre. We began with an internal evaluation of our seminars, and improved our own qualifications through extensive trainings. Moreover, thanks to intensified public relations work we reached a broader circle of participants. At the beginning of 2006 we changed the institutional frames of the federal state co-operation, and established a non-profit public organization.
As part of the support from the federal state project World-open Saxony, since 2006 we have been evaluated by the “Institute for Interdisciplinary Conflict and Violence Research” of the Bielefeld University. This greatly contributed to the mode of our functioning. Recently we have been able to expand our offer to include intensive trainings on more detailed themes.
In 2007 six new experienced trainers joined the LAG pokuBi. They have their own experience with migration and offer trainings on the topics of “Empowerment in the context of migration, culture and racism” and “Diversity”.
* the previously used term ‘rightwing extremism’ was replaced at the end of 2008 by ‘neo-Nazism’ which names the problem more accurately and which is linguistically differentiated from the more widely-used term. This also reflects our own distance from the commonly existing conceptions of extremism.
