English to Spanish: Mexico and Central America General field: Social Sciences
Source text - English Every year at least one million people migrate across national borders in Mexico and Central America, deeply affecting the region across every level of economic, social, political and cultural life. While migration can offer individuals opportunities for social mobility an confer benefits to communities. It also brings major challenges such as migrant´s vulnerability to human rights abuses (particularly among women), family separation and increased exposure to HIV/AIDS and other diseases. In addition, rapid out-migration poses significant challenges to local institutions, land tenure and land use. This mass mobilization is a direct manifestation of the deep-rooted exclusion and poverty of the countries in which we work. Existing institutions and policies have failed to create conditions that allow all members of society to access opportunities, services and resources. Among those most affected are indigenous and Afro-descendant people, women, migrants and persons living with HIV/AIDS.
We believe that by addressing the structural problems that expel people from their places of origin, we can make migration an option rather than necessity.
Our grant making seeks to promote inclusion and diversity by enhancing the ability of excluded groups to take control of their destinies and become actors for social change. We believe that strengthened leadership, increased organizational capacity and the ability to effectively control their ancestral territories are important pathways to reduce exclusion and consolidate democracy in the region. We also pursue efforts to make migration safer, develop alternative approaches to restrictive policies and maximize the positive impacts of migration (...)
Spanish to English: Small fragment of an opera libretto
Source text - Spanish Antonieta:
¡Me estoy muriendo! ¡La locura ronda!
Soy un estorbo. ¡No tengo patria!
Me congela y me hiere. La nieve me amenaza, el cuerpo
explota de dolor. Hay unos seres amenazadores (...)
Translation - English X: What is this pain? It´s cold and… It´s full of moist, of cold, of gray. These gloomy buildings are falling over me.
CHOIR: Quantus tremor est futurus.
X: There is an everlasting dance in my dreams. I am lovesick. Pleasure of loving, sorrows of love. How did I get here? I always enjoyed playing the piano, it has been so long since I did it last, that my fingers are stiff and hard. Earth raises its voice to prevent me from touching its ground. The Angel, it is beautiful! I see it flying in my dreams.
X begins to walk in circles really fast, more nervous every time.
I need tear up all my letters. I am dying! Madness prowls around! I am a nuisance. I have no country! I cannot stand it any longer! There is a pain that consumes me, that devours me. Snow invades my body, it gets into me, freezes me, hurts me. The snow frightens me, my body explodes of pain. There are some threatening beings (...)
