With the feel of a cybercrime Grand Theft Auto, Watch Dogs allows you to roam through a city, hacking into almost any part of it via a central operating system called the ‘ctOS’. That includes mobile phones, CCTV cameras, bridges and traffic lights, allowing you to ambush targets by causing car crashes or dodge the cops by lifting a bridge as you escape across it. The combination of its mind-blowing graphics and Ubisoft’s refusal to announce platforms leads us to believe that Watch Dogs could be our first glimpse into gaming’s next generation.
ZOMBIEU
The pick of the Wii U’s launch titles is this survival horror set amid a zombie takeover of London. Use the GamePad’s screen as a radar, a sniper scope for your crossbow or to stock up your inventory with vital ammo. ZombiU is about as far from the mushrooms and stars of Mario Land as it’s possible to be.
BEYOND: TWO SOULS
Starring Inception actress Ellen Page as spooky protagonist Jodie Holmes, Beyond is a spiritual successor to 2010’s Heavy Rain in more ways than one. Billed as an emotional ‘interactive drama’, you take control over 15 years of Jodie’s life in the hope of uncovering the truth behind her psychic link to the ‘other side’.
HALO 4
Microsoft has shunned a Tomb Raider-style reboot for more of the same intergalactic fisticuffs, with Master Chief (real name: John) returning to fight a new enemy, and new multiplayer modes including the story-driven Spartan Ops. Those aside , few changes – good news for Halo fans.
THE LAST OF US
Uncharted developer Naughty Dog channels Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Road in this brutal, dystopian shooter. Survival is the name of the game, with limited ammo and some particularly unwelcoming residents inhabiting the buildings you and your orphan friend Ellie explore. Tense doesn’t begin to describe it.
