Source text - English In what has been termed as a biggest milestone in its banking history, Oman is all set to initiate work on its new Islamic Bank. Following the Royal Directives from His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said in early May, granting approval for the creation of the Islamic bank and also permitting conventional banks to open branches dedicated to Islamic financing, a new era has dawned on the banking sector; one that is conducive to promoting interstate investment and financing by the business community of Oman and the GCC member countries.
Experts on Islamic finance also believe that the Sharia-compliant financial institutions that are expected to start operations in the country soon would be able to capture 10 per cent of the market share of the total banking assets within few years. Ernst & Young’s Islamic Financial Services Group said assets in Oman’s Islamic banks could rise to as much as $6bn over the next few years - that is if the country rolls out a successful Sharia-compliant banking system.
With the focus of nation’s investment and finance houses firmly fixed on the developments in the field of Islamic banking and Sharia-compliant financial products, there is a sense of excitement among businesses. At a recently concluded conference on ‘Oman Islamic Banking Conference 2011’ (organized by ITS – International Turnkey Solutions, a global leader in Islamic technology solutions), experts opined that Islamic banking principals are more relevant today and that conducting business on the guidelines of Islamic principles provides investors with an element of confidence and peace. The conference also highlighted that worldwide some of the renowned international banks use Islamic finance instruments like sukkuk (Islamic bonds) to raise funds for Sharia oriented investors.
