Professional practices Cynthia Whitehead endorses's Professional Guidelines.

I am a lawyer, writer, interpreter and translator with extensive experience in law, communications and project management for the European Union, national governments, international organizations and companies working in international settings.
My specialties include: European Union and national law in German, French, and English-speaking countries, commercial law, patents, energy, environment and international public and private law.
In 1986, I co-founded the multi-language communications company Poplar, s.c., in Brussels and co-directed it from 1986-1997; we produced reports and communication materials primarily for the European Union.

My clients are primarily European institutions and translation companies  working for leading international law firms and the EU.

I worked as a legal advisor to the European Commission on environmental law and policy from 1982-2011.

I have lived and worked in Germany (8 years), Belgium (25 years) and in 38 other countries where I worked with or managed multinational teams of diverse skills and nationalities, and produce high-quality, complex reports, training, workshops and communication materials relating European Union and international law and preparations for accession to the European Union.

Since moving to the California, I work as a freelance consultant on environmental and EU law, writer, interpreter and translator. I am currently working on pro bono projects for the Magnes Museum in Berkeley, various refugee projects, a translation of instructions for the Chevra Kadisha, published in Prague in 1930, and supporting legal education in Afghanistan.

Together with colleagues in the UK, USA, Australia and Afghanistan, I have established the Sustainable Law Institute – a network of lawyers specializing in assisting countries to develop, draft and implement laws that support democracy, good governance, human rights and sustainable development.
