La première démonstration d'un miroir à torsion miniature (~ 2x2 mm) Elle a été réalisée par Kurt Petersen chez IBM en 1982.
Si on prend cette réalisation comme base de référence, Petersen avait prévu que « ...les microsystèmes mécaniques en silicium pouvait éventuellement trouver une application pratique pour les écrans d'affichage (plus particulièrement si on arrivait à intégrer la circuiterie silicium de commande sur la même puce en adressant électroniquement de manière matricielle le réseau de miroirs bi-dimensionnel) ». Cette affirmation s'est avérée véritablement prophétique vu le succès des microsystèmes pour réaliser des écrans tels que le « DMD, Digital Micromirror Device » de Texas Instruments.
On s'aperçoit vite que les écrans utilisant des réseaux de micro-miroirs sont le plus ancien champ d'applications des microsystèmes optiques. La tendance a cependant conduit à bien d'autres applications pour les réseaux de micro-miroirs comme nous le verrons ci-après.
L'idée de base des systèmes à micro-miroirs digitaux consiste à produire un réseau de micro-miroirs bistables pour intercepter le rayon lumineux de telle sorte qu'une des positions d'un micro-miroir dirige la lumière sur un écran alors que l'autre position la dirige vers un bloc absorbant. Pour cela, chaque micro-miroir actionne et module un pixel différent. En réalisant un tramage sur le miroir, une échelle de gris peut aussi être réalisée. Les écrans couleur peuvent être obtenus par des méthodes standard telles qu'une roue colorée (le plus compact et le moins cher donc le plus courant) ou des réseaux de miroirs triples pour les trois couleurs fondamentales (rouge-vert-bleu) combinés avec des optiques dichroïques et projetant sur le même écran. Cette technologie fait l'objet d'un développement plus long par la suite.

This assertion turned out to be excellent judging by the success of Microsystems to make screens such as the Texas Instrument DMD (Digital Micro-mirror Device).
We can quickly see that the screens using micro-mirrors gratings are the oldest scope of optical Microsystems. But we will see that the trend led to many other applications for micro-mirror networks.
The basic idea of digital micro-mirror systems consists in making a bistable micro-mirrors grating in order to intercept a beam of light so that one of the positions of a micro-mirror directs light on a screen while another position directs it to an absorbent block. For this, each micro-mirror activates and modulates a different pixel. We can also establishing a gray scale while making a dithering on the mirror. Color screens can be reached by standard methods: color wheel (the most compact and cheapest, and therefore, the most usual) or triple-mirrors gratings for the three fundamental colors (red, green and blue) combined with dichroic optical mirrors and displaying on the same screen. We will go into the details in the fourth part.
