Source text - Spanish En ciudades urbanas compactas, en tiempo de lluvia, los vertidos procedentes de los reboses de los sistemas unitarios de la red de saneamiento suponen importantes impactos sobre los medios acuáticos receptores.
Para dar solución a esta problemática, la construcción de tanques de tormenta anticontaminación es cada vez más habitual. En un entorno con una pluviometría característica de un clima mediterráneo, se toma como piloto objeto de estudio una cuenca de drenaje que dispone de un tanque de tormenta anticontaminación, localizada en la ciudad de Barcelona (Spain). La incorporación del tanque en la cuenca, con una operativa habitual de llenado, retención y vaciado cuando la estación depuradora puede asumir las aguas, supone una reducción aproximada del 43% de la masa anual total vertida a medio receptor en tiempo de lluvia (medida en sólidos en suspensión y demanda química de oxígeno).
El análisis, en la misma cuenca, del comportamiento de la contaminación en tiempo de lluvia en la red de saneamiento, en la que no se detecta ni factor de dilución, ni fenómeno de primer lavado, juntamente con los resultados de los ensayos de decantación de la contaminación del agua retenida en el tanque, permiten el planteamiento de una operativa, alternativa a la habitual, que aproveche el proceso la decantación natural que se produce en el propio tanque. Esta nueva operativa se basa en un vaciado directo a medio receptor de las capas medias y superiores de la columna de agua que queda estratificada en el tanque después de la decantación, lo que permitiría la regulación inmediata de nuevos volúmenes de agua de lluvia contaminada y reduciría el volumen de agua enviado a la depuradora.
El análisis de la decantación en el tanque ha permitido identificar el momento y punto óptimos para realizar el vaciado del tanque, concretamente a las 2 horas de iniciado el proceso de sedimentación, cuando más del 80% de masa ha decantado, y a una altura que permita la evacuación de las capas superiores al 10% de la columna de agua.
Translation - English In compact urban cities, during the rainy season, the overflow discharges from combined sewer systems become significant impacts on the receiving water.
To provide a solution to this problem, the construction of runoff storage tanks is becoming increasingly common.
With a distinctive Mediterranean climate, a drainage basin with a runoff storage tank was chosen to be studied. The basin is located in the city of Barcelona (Spain).
Inclusion of the runoff storage tank, with a regular operation comprised of fill, retention and drain, when the sewage treatment plant can handle the receiving waters, provides an approximate 43% reduction of the annual total solids discharged into the water bodies during the rainy season (measured as suspended solids and chemical oxygen demand).
Analysis performed on this basin on the contamination behavior in the sewer system during a rainy season, allows for the proposal of an alternative operation that takes advantage of the natural settling process happening in the tank. For the analysis, neither a dilution factor nor first flush were detected, additionally the particle settling tests performed on water collected from the tank were also taken into account for the analysis.
The proposed operation is based on a direct discharge to the water bodies, of the middle and upper regions of the resulting water column after the settling process in the tank is completed; the result would allow immediate regulation of further incoming volumes of contaminated rainfall water, reducing the water volume sent to the sewage treatment plant.
The particle settling tests on the runoff storage tank have led to the identification of the ideal time and location to draw the water, specifically after 2 hours of the settling process, when more than 80% of the solids have settled, and at a tank level that allows discharging of 10% of the upper water column layers.

Do you like food? I do! But why do we eat? Is what we eat important? What’s the difference if we eat broccoli and carrots and eggs and apples, or if we eat French fries and marshmallows and candy and slushees? There’s a big difference to what you and your body will be able to do!
So first off, after we chew and swallow our food, it goes into our stomach and digestive system. There are all sorts of liquids and chemicals that break down your food into teeny tiny pieces – way smaller that you could see with your eyes. These pieces get absorbed into the rest of your body, where they are used in many different roles. Some pieces are used to build and fix body parts, like skin and bones and muscles. Other pieces are used to make blood and brain cells, while other pieces ensure we have energy to play and be healthy.
My body likes to make muscles out of food like beans and chicken. My brain likes avocados and walnuts; YUM! Carrots and apples give me energy to play. These healthy foods allow our body to:
• Be Strong and Healthy
• Make our brain learn and remember
• Let us be happy and play all day
What happens if we don’t eat our fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods? If I eat chips and chocolate and pop and hotdogs, that’s what makes up my building blocks.
• I may not be as strong
• I may get sick more often
• I might have problems with school
• I might be sad and angry
• I may not be able to play a whole game of soccer.
Just because of what I eat!
When I eat healthy foods, I have lots of healthy building blocks to work with. I can run and play and learn. Today I had some fruit and oatmeal for breakfast, a whole grain tuna sandwich for lunch, some celery and bean dip for snack, and then chicken, peas and yams for dinner. It gave me healthy building blocks and my body was very happy; YUM YUM YUM!!
SOMETIMES, we may want to have an ice cream cone or a cookie or a sucker. It would be best to keep these treats for special occasions such as a birthday parties or a day at the water park. If you eat them every day, your body will not have the good blocks you need to build you with. That makes it hard to be the happy, healthy kid you want to be!
So, when your mom or dad asks if you want to have spinach with dinner, say ‘yes please’! Then, on those special occasions where there are not-so-healthy foods, you will know your body has lots of goodness to still keep you healthy and active. Sounds good to me – can you please pass the broccoli!

¿Te gusta la comida? ¡A mi me gusta! Pero, ¿por qué comemos? ¿Es importante lo que comemos ? ¿Cuál es la diferencia si comemos brócoli y zanahorias, huevos y manzanas, o si comemos patatas fritas y bombones, caramelos y granizado? ¡Hay una gran diferencia en lo tú y tu cuerpo será capaz de hacer!
En primer lugar, después de masticar y tragar los alimentos, estos entran al estómago y pasan por el sistema digestivo. Allí, hay todo tipo de líquidos y substancias que descomponen los alimentos en pedazos muy pero muy pequeños; tan pequeños que no podrías verlos a simple vista. Estos pequeños pedazos son absorbidos en el resto de tu cuerpo, que los utiliza de diferentes formas. Algunas de los pedazos son utilizados para construir y reparar partes de tu cuerpo, como la piel y los huesos y músculos. Otros pedazos se utilizan para producir células de la sangre y del cerebro, al tiempo que otros pedazos aseguran que tengamos energía para jugar y mantenernos saludables.
A mi cuerpo le gusta fabricar músculos de alimentos como los fríjoles y el pollo. A mi cerebro le gustan los aguacates y las nueces; ¡QUE RICO! Las zanahorias y las manzanas me dan energía para jugar. Estos alimentos son saludables y permiten a nuestro cuerpo:
• Ser fuerte y saludable
• Tener un cerebro que aprende y recuerda cosas
• Poder ser felices y jugar todo el día
¿Qué sucede si no comemos frutas, verduras y otros alimentos saludables? Si como papas fritas y chocolates y refrescos y perritos calientes, estos se volverán los bloques con los que mi cuerpo estará en construcción.
• No sere tan fuerte
• Me puedo enfermar más a menudo
• Podría tener problemas en la escuela
• Podría estar triste y enojado
• No podré ser capaz de jugar todo el juego de fútbol.
¡Sólo porque lo que me he comido!
Cuando como alimentos saludables, tengo un montón de bloques de construcción con los que mi cuerpo puede funcionar. Podré correr y jugar y aprender. Hoy he desayunado un poco de fruta y cereal de avena, después un sandwich de atún con pan integral a la hora del almuerzo, un poco de apio y dip de frijoles para la merienda y, a continuación, pollo, guisantes y ñame para la cena. Estos alimentos me proporcionaron bloques de construcción saludables y mi cuerpo se siente muy feliz; ¡MMM MMM MMM!
ALGUNAS VECES, es posible que quiera comer un cono de helado o una galleta o una paleta. Source text - English Have you heard of a 'carbon footprint'? Carbon is something in the air, in the water, and in plants and trees. It is even in us! The Earth likes to have a little carbon just about everywhere. A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon that each person, plant or tree makes.
The problem with carbon is there is more in the air than there should be. Now it is unbalanced. The carbon that is usually stored in trees, or deep under ground, is changed. But, how does carbon get into the air? Most of the time, it is from burning. For example, if we burn a tree for firewood, the carbon leaves the tree. Imagine it is moving to a new home, or to a new town. It moves out of the tree and into the air.
For many different reasons, the Earth has too much carbon in the air. So, if trees store carbon, will planting trees take some carbon OUT of the air? Yes!
Planting a tree is a good way to help our planet, and a great way to spend time with your family. Did you know that about half of a tree is carbon? There are many kinds of trees out there, so what kind of tree should you plant? All trees are great at storing carbon, but some trees hold more than others.
The trees with leaves that fall to the ground store more carbon. They are also known as deciduous, broadleaf, or hardwood trees. These include oak, birch, and fruit trees. Fruit trees are also a source of food, and would make a great choice for your tree.
The trees that have needles hold a little bit less carbon. These trees are called conifers, evergreen, or softwood trees. These include pine, fir, and spruce trees. Evergreens make great homes for wildlife. These trees are still very good at storing carbon.
If a tree stands for one hundred years, the amount of carbon a tree can store is the same weight as you and 7 of your friends!
Next time you are outside with your family, try to guess how much carbon is hiding inside each tree! Which tree do you think has more? Count them. How much carbon do you think is in a leaf? Try to guess! Now you know how amazing trees are, and how much they help our planet. And they are fun to climb!
Translation - Spanish ¿Has oído hablar de la "huella de carbono'? El carbono es algo en el aire, el agua, en las plantas y los árboles. Incluso está en nosotros! A la tierra le gusta tener un poco de carbono por todas partes. La huella de carbono es la cantidad de carbono que produce cada persona, planta o árbol.
El problema con el carbono es que en el aire hay más de lo que debería haber. Ahora está desequilibrado. El carbono que suele almacenarse en los árboles, o bajo tierra muy profundo, ha cambiado. Pero, ¿cómo pasa el carbono al aire? La mayoría de las veces es por la quemas. Por ejemplo, cuando se quema un árbol el carbono deja el árbol. Imagina que el carbono se está moviendo a una casa nueva, o a una ciudad nueva. Se desplaza fuera del árbol y pasa al aire.
Por muchas razones diferentes, la tierra tiene demasiado carbono en el aire. Por lo tanto, ¿si los árboles almacenan carbono, plantando árboles se retoma el carbono del aire? Sí!
Plantar árboles es una forma muy buena de ayudar a nuestro planeta, y además una forma buena de pasar tiempo con su familia. ¿Sabías que cerca de la mitad de un árbol está hecho de carbono?
