Après des années de lissages, j’assiste en 2011 à la transition capillaire de Sunkissalba, une youtubeuse américaine et c’est LA RÉVÉLATION. Si elle est belle avec ses boucles, alors pourquoi pas moi ? Il était temps que je m’assume ! En fin 2011, je me décide alors à couper 30 cm de chevelure. Toutefois, quelque mois après, je cède à la tendance du lissage brésilien, je n’étais pas encore prête. Il m’aura fallu un voyage aux USA en 2014 et LA rencontre avec une instagrameuse célébrant la beauté des boucles, pour me décider à enfin me lancer ! La seconde tentative est la bonne ! Je me décide à partager ce retour au naturel avec vous, pour me donner le courage d’aller jusqu’au bout. Mes 5 années à conseiller des dizaines de milliers de femmes sur Youtube m’a donné le goût d’aider les femmes à assumer leur beauté, peu importe leurs bouclettes ! Mon expérience à la tête du service marketing d’une marque de cosmétiques m’a permis de comprendre ce que je pouvais apporter en faisant autrement.
J’ai imaginé le temple de la boucle que j’aurais aimé trouver en tant que consommatrice, persuadée que s’il était possible de l’imaginer il serait forcément possible de le faire.

Translation - English I waited my whole childhood to be old enough to start blow-drying my hair.
After years of straightening, in 2011 I followed American youtuber Sunkissalba as she went through her hair transition and that was THE MOMENT OF TRUTH. If she can be beautiful with her curls, why can’t I? It was time for me to own who I was! At the end of 2011, I decided to cut off 30 inches of hair. Even so, I succumbed to the Brazilian straightening trend a few months later. I just wasn’t ready yet. It took a trip to the United States in 2014, and THE meeting with an instagrammer who celebrated the beauty of curls, for me to finally decide to take the plunge! The second attempt was the one that stuck! To give me the courage to see it through, I decided to share my return to natural hair with you. My 5 years of advising tens of thousands of women on YouTube gave me a taste for helping women own their beauty, ringlets and beyond! My experience being in charge of a cosmetic brand’s marketing department helped me understand what I could offer by doing things differently.
I imagined the curl temple that I would have liked to find as a consumer, sure that if it was possible to imagine it, it would surely be possible to do it.

Trois raisons majeures pour créer Ankata.
1. Le Burkina Faso, pays enclavé, sans ressource forestière et minière majeure, ne compte que sur la création de ces Hommes pour se développer. L’art et la culture sont d'ailleurs considérés comme le pétrole du Burkina Faso.
2. Ankata sera une des rares structures transdisciplinaires en Afrique de l’ouest. La musique, la danse, le théâtre et l’art plastique n’a jamais été séparée dans toutes les formes d’art traditionnel, la séparation est venue avec la colonisation. Ankata y ajoute l’art numérique.
3. Créer une autonomie de la création et de l’art Africain à un moment où il y a de moins en moins d’argent dans la culture en Europe, il faut anticiper pour continuer à exister vu que l’art et la culture en Afrique sont sous perfusion Européenne depuis les indépendances.

Directeur artistique de Faso Danse Théâtre, il donne régulièrement des conférences sur la création contemporaine en Afrique dans différents pays dans le monde.
Le pays des Hommes (Burkina Faso) reste encore un pays en Afrique ou la gestion et la volonté de sortir de la pauvreté et du fatalisme est grande et rigoureuse. Ce qui donne une grande garantie pour la réalisation d’un projet aussi ambitieux qu’ANKATA.

Three key reasons for creating Ankata:
1. Burkina Faso it is a landlocked country without any major forest or mineral reserves; its Honest People need to create for the country to develop. In fact, art and culture are considered the fuel of Burkina Faso.
2. Ankata will be one of the rare interdisciplinary organizations in West Africa. Music, dance, theater and visual art were never treated as separate entities in any traditional art forms. The separation came with colonization. Ankata will also add digital art to the mix.
3. To create a self-sustaining model African art and creation at a time when funding for culture in Europe is progressively declining. We have to be prepared if we want to continue to exist, given that art and culture in Africa have been heavily supported by Europe since the countries became independent.
An innovative project where the artistic, economic, social and ecological spheres intersect.

- A space for residence and for multidisciplinary, professional and contemporary creation for artists from West Africa and around the world.
- A place for production as well as continued professional and amateur training.

- An art gallery with a selection of the region’s best works in design and art.
Economic:
- High quality provisions for accommodation, fit to host around fifty people.
- A restaurant and bar, where bands, dance troupes and theater groups will perform regularly.
- Arrangements to rent out sound and light equipment to companies and institutions in the country or from neighboring countries, particularly from the multimedia room which is set up for videoconferencing.
- Service provisions for weddings and private events.
Ecological:
- An electrical system that is entirely fueled by solar energy. Burkina has sunny days 99.99% of the time and Bobo Dioulasso has an average temperature of 30°C throughout the year.
- Ankata’s water supply comes from internal boreholes.
- The intricate and modern architecture has incorporated local, sustainable building techniques in terms of the materials used and energy conservation.

He has worked with Europe’s biggest names in contemporary creation (Alain Platel, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, etc.) for over a decade. He is also a choreographer and trainer for Marrugeku, an Aboriginal Australian company, since 2004 and works frequently in Asia. As the Artistic Director of Faso Danse Théâtre, he regularly conducts conferences in different countries on contemporary creation in Africa.
The Land of Honest People (Burkina Faso) remains a country in Africa where there is great determination and aspiration to come out of poverty and fatalism. This is what gives us great assurance for bringing to life a project as ambitious as ANKATA.

Cette jeune Française de 30 ans a étudié le droit, puis la photographie en Angleterre. Véronique a commencé sa carrière en Afghanistan afin de couvrir l’arrivée des troupes britanniques. Elle est tombée sous le charme du pays. Ses photos de talibans ont fait le tour du monde.
« Le but de cette pratique ? On aplatit, on écrase les seins pour reculer le moment de la puberté, afin de protéger les filles du désir des hommes, des professeurs en particulier. C’est toujours la même histoire : c’est la femme qui doit souffrir, c’est elle qui est punie du désir de l’homme…il existe plusieurs façons de détruire les seins. Sur cette photo, c’est une rebouteuse qui aplatit le mamelon avec un bâton à couscous. Cela se passe au Cameroun où cette très ancienne pratique est restée très longtemps un secret entre mères et filles. On dit souvent de mes photos : “Ça se voit que c’est une fille qui les a prises”, et c’est vrai que je traite souvent les sujets féminins, que les hommes photographes ne pourraient pas aborder. Pour ce reportage au Cameroun, nous avons dû entrer dans l’intimité des femmes, gagner leur confiance pour qu’elles acceptent de nous montrer leur corps, qu’elles nous laissent photographier leurs seins, avec leurs cicatrices… »
Translation - English Breast Ironing – Véronique de Viguerie
This young thirty-year-old Frenchwoman has studied law and then photography in England. Véronique began her career in Afghanistan, where she covered the arrival of the British troops. She fell in love with the country. Her photos of the Taliban have traveled all over the world.
“What is the purpose of this practice? It’s so that the breasts are flattened, crushed to delay the onset of puberty and protect girls from men’s desires, particularly teachers. It’s always the same story: it’s the woman who must suffer, who is punished for the man’s desire… There are several ways to destroy the breasts. In this picture, a bonesetter crushes the nipple with a stick used to make couscous. This very old custom is practiced in Cameroon, where it has stayed a secret between mothers and daughters for a long time. Often, when people look at my pictures, they say, ‘It’s clear that a girl has taken these.’ And it’s true that I often take up women’s issues which male photographers wouldn’t be able to handle. For this report in Cameroon, we had to enter into the private lives of women and gain their trust, so that they were willing to show us their bodies, so that they let us photograph their breasts, with their scars…”
