Source text - Spanish Los síntomas que usted o su familiar padece son debidos a una falta de riego sanguíneo cerebral. Una de las arterias que conducen la sangre al cerebro acaba de bloquearse por un coágulo. Ello impide la llegada de sangre y el correcto funcionamiento de una parte del cerebro.
Algunos de los síntomas son debidos a la muerte inmediata, en los primeros minutos, de una cantidad más o menos amplia de tejido cerebral. Es lo que llamamos área de infarto cerebral.
Sin embargo, otra parte de los síntomas es debida a una alteración potencialmente reversible de la función cerebral, es decir, a la existencia de una cantidad de tejido cerebral que no funciona debido a la falta de un riego sanguíneo suficiente pero que no está muerto y puede ser recuperable. Es lo que llamamos área de penumbra. Esta área se convertirá en área de tejido muerto (infarto) en poco tiempo si la arteria continúa taponada.
Translation - English The symptoms that you, or your family member, are experiencing are due to a lack of blood supply to the brain. One of the arteries which supplies blood to the brain has become blocked by a clot. This is stopping blood from reaching that part of the brain, preventing it from functioning correctly.
Some of the symptoms are due to the immediate death of an amount of brain tissue in the first few minutes, this is called the area of cerebral infarction. However, some symptoms will be due to potentially reversible brain damage, put another way, there is an amount of brain tissue which is not functioning due to lack of adequate blood supply, but which has not died and may recover. This is known as the penumbra zone. This area will become dead tissue (infarction) in a small amount of time if the artery continues to be blocked.
