English to Spanish: End of the Oil Age General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Engineering (general)
Source text - English Bill Reinert, an innovator of Toyota's gasoline-saving Prius, says carmakers aren't moving fast enough to cope with global warming and $100-a-barrel crude. Hybrids, plug-ins and electric-only vehicles must take center stage to help the planet avoid environmental and economic disaster.
Bill Reinert, who helped design Toyota Motor Corp.'s Prius hybrid, hovers in a helicopter 1,000 feet over Fort McMurray, Alberta. On this clear November morning, he's craning for a look at one of the world's largest petroleum reserves where there's not an oil well in sight. Instead, in a 2-mile-wide pit below, trucks head to refineries with loads of sand weighing more than Boeing 747s. Yellow flames shoot skyward as 900-degree-Fahrenheit (482-degree- Celsius) heat liquefies any embedded petroleum. Floating scarecrows and propane-powered cannons do their best to chase migrating birds from lethal wastewater ponds. Eventually, nuclear reactors may surround the crater 270 miles (435 kilometers) northeast of Edmonton, Alberta, delivering the power required to wring oil from sand.
"This is what the end of the age of oil means," says Reinert, 60, who plans the vehicles that Toyota will make in a quarter of a century as national manager for advanced technology at the U.S. sales unit in Torrance, California. "The car-based culture, the business-as- usual of building cars and trucks, is going to change dramatically."
Since Henry Ford introduced the moving assembly line in 1913, the world's automakers have relied on a single source of power--the gasoline-dependent internal combustion engine. Today, the twin threats of $100-a-barrel oil and global warming are convulsing an industry addicted to cheap, abundant petroleum. Auto companies, already hurt in 2007 by the lowest U.S. demand in a decade, are struggling to perfect cars that run on ethanol, diesel, natural gas, hydrogen and household electricity. They're under the gun from California and more than a dozen other states to cut carbon exhaust by 2020 with vehicles that must get 44 miles per gallon (19 kilometers per liter) of gasoline, about double today's average. On Dec. 19, President George W. Bush signed a law that mandates fuel-efficiency of 35 mpg nationwide by that year.

Source text - English BUS ACCIDENTS
Every day in the United States, workers, school children, vacationers and travelers board buses to reach their destinations. Buses and motor coaches are one of the most convenient and affordable methods of transportation. However, when a bus is involved in an accident, the number of injuries can be alarmingly high. These injuries are often more severe than those caused by other auto accidents because the safety measures – such as seatbelts -- that normally apply to smaller vehicles are not required on buses. This puts bus riders at risk for serious injuries.

In my first visit to the doctor after my surgery I asked him “what can I do to cure Crohn’s Disease or at least be better? Will changing my diet help?” He was a highly respected doctor in his field with a beautiful office. He just smiled, shook his head and said “No, diet has nothing to do with Crohn’s Disease so just eat whatever you can eat and we’ll try and dial in the right medications for you. If the affected part of your intestine gets too scarred up you’ll need to have surgery to remove it.”
In the months that followed I ate whatever I wanted to and my Crohn’s flare-ups became more common. Around this time my mother told me that she had talked to a natural healer who recommended that I do an elimination diet to see if certain common foods were causing my illness. But I was stubborn! I said “mom, the doctors say it has nothing to do with diet and they’ll manage it with medications. I don’t need any of that “New Age” diet hocus pocus!”

Source text - English When you want to treat yourself to a real luxury fabric alpaca should be at the top of your list. Warm, light and hypoallergenic, it also looks great and feels soft and sensuous. Once it was so highly valued that only Inca royalty were allowed to wear it, but now it's widely available in a range of delightful garments.
Alpaca fiber is a 100% natural material that takes its name from its source. The alpaca is a domesticated animal from South America that looks quite like a small llama. Alpacas stand about three feet high at the shoulder and weigh up to 180 pounds, and live in small herds. They've been bred in South America for thousands of years and have a valued place in culture and mythology. There are two types of alpaca, noted for the difference in their fleece. Huacaya alpacas have a dense, crimped coat like soft sheep's wool, while Suri have longer silky locks. Most of the fleece is white but in total there are 22 natural colors; white alpaca can also be dyed, and will take on deep, rich colors. An alpaca is sheared once a year and the finest, softest fiber comes from younger animals.
